This concept is something I really like, shipbuilding and shipbreaking is something we don’t see a lot in sci fi and I was overjoyed to see the ship breakers in Jedi fallen order. We always see them being destroyed but we never see what happens when they reach the end of the line. Definitely gonna get this game
Closest I can think of are the Troy Rising books, where there were sections of it from the perspective of the welder and salvage crews. Lovely books. Man gets out from under the tumb of our alien overlords because the local mercantile race gets high/drunk off maple syrup.
Fanus Obscurus Love that series. Also love all the references characters make on purpose through out the series.
@@fanusobscurus My favorite book is Space Doctor which is a diamond-hard Sci-Fi that follows the surgeon of a construction crew building an orbital station. Asks real obvious questions that the softer sci-fis just gloss over.
How does one conduct a surgery in Zero-G for example? How do you transport casualties? How do you preform First Aid when both you and the victim are both in a space walk?
There was that one scene right after the title opening of Titan AE showing him (main character voiced by Matt Damond) doing something damn similar to what was shown right here, cutting an old hunk of salvage spaceship off.
I’d love a manual ship building game, like this gameplay but building instead of breaking them down, plus I’d love to then race around with them
This how the guy in subnautica pays his debt to alterra
i was actually thinking about that when i watched this
He just needs 1,000,000,000,000 credits
@@lord_morp8824 You'd think he could just sell off his precious data he collected to Alterra to repay his debt
Star citizen is screaming at the screen saying “dam you we was just about to implement this exact thing in our salvaging mechanic in 2029”
Good gameplay always trumps the best graphics in the world. That's the one thing I truely hate about RSI, they do have it a bit backwards on that part.
@@VulpeculaJoy and good performance
Nono, 2029 is when SLS will launch and explode, which will be a few months after the JWST is finally launched. SC will get the salvage mechanic in 2039. Final launch will happen in 2095.
Yeah you know when space x beats star citizen to salvaging game play that they can finally call it a day.
Star Citizen will need to raise another £300m from the chumps before it introduces salvaging in 2028
Hmmm VR yes, multiplayer on a Dreadnought sized ship would be fun also...one slip and your salvage team would be doomed.
not to mention the fun u could have with playing power core hot potato or panel tag
@@keydar6637 that would be amazing
I can barely take apart a small ship in 15 minutes
Havin someone else to help throw stuff into the tunnels would be amazing
One of them 1.4 KM sized buggers?...oh yes that would be fun...or if they could get a license...Warhammer 40K shipbreaker ...might pop open a bulkhead and find some 'nids.
Some time ago, in another place; I commented about how the premise and controls etc. would be absolutely perfect for VR. I was reminded that the developers have no plans to implement VR. =( =(
You can check the game’s Steam page, especially their goals/future targets list: zero mentions of VR. Ditto on the entire page.
God, I love the music in this. That intro of the little girl giving the prayer? Like damn.
Would love to salvage some warships if they put those in the game.
Giant cruisers too. Possibly an abandoned space station for a grand finale. If anything, salvaging massive busted-beyond-repair ships would be fantastic for a multiplayer option once they get this game fixed and neatly polished. Multiple Cutters working on the same ship that would be normally too big for a single Cutter to slice up themselves sounds like a fun time to me!
@@VampiricDragon666 A co-op multiplayer would be insane
I want to see some Gundam level war wreckage floating in space.
@@VampiricDragon666 Doubt Multiplayer would happen as having to sync the physics simulation between multiple computers would require some damn impressive tech. Couch Splitscreen Co-op would be possible, though.
You already have this kind of playstyle in Space Engineers when you fight a pirate ship and then cut it up for resourses. Too bad SE didnt have this functionality of ripping off and reinstalling already built modules.
They made a whole game about the Intergalactic Dibs Law.
You have to lick it to claim first dibs.

The music and to some extent, the game, reminds me of Firefly... it’s a pretty cool game. Might have to try it.
I said to myself that if I firefly class ship came in I couldn't dare break her.
I would save the game and never play again unless I wanted to view and walk the ship for memories.
I had the same thought about the music
So very much it does!!
Rebel Galaxy had a very similar set of music to both of these and it's amazingly perfect fit.
looks like Armco's in the reclamation business now
Best salvage team in the 'verse. :D
Always has been.
I mean, ARMCO sounds like a Shipbreaker Company name
I'd be proud to fly the ARMCO flag on a salvage ship I owned.
Same
I find it amazing that the items spin around on their center of mass. It is so cool that's in a video game.
I literally just bought this game today and started playing like an hour or two before this came out:) I also love the intro of the little girls voice
DUDE! less than 5 seconds in and I'm digging the music....
The other side of Space engineers and Avorion.
Think of the poor sods who have to break down all your crazy creations =)
Usually just let Clang take care of it.
The intro music and feel def. Firefly, so much Firefly.
The cutting looks like its super satisfying
it is... played 5 hours yesterday... you just can't stop... highly recommend it
I was getting a serious Firefly vibe from this game. Then I heard the music in this video and that just seals the deal for me. Either way I 100% need this game in my life now that I've seen it in action :)
This game is so dope. Literally stayed up all night playing.
So basically, this is the beginning of the movie Titan A.E.
A person of culture i see :-)
The CGI effects may haven't aged well but i still hold this movie dear to my heart. Along with _Treasure Planet_ a hidden gem, imho
Favorite movie when I was a kid.
@@Pendragon667 between the references, and your screen name, I feel like you and I would be good friends
jesus how does one person get almost a billion dollars in debt
Took out student loans
He had to go to hospital in Murica
You live in America.
He got a cold in America
They tried to parallel park a capital ship.
You can actually crawl around when using the grab inputs X and Z, which also saves jetpack fuel. It takes a bit to get used to.
Its surprisingly effective and fun to use. I've only seen VR games pull this off and feel usable.
You'll run out of O2 long before your fuel runs out. And most of the higher tier ships have fuel and O2 laying around that you can grab. They also explode.
@@ashleythomas9671 first big upgrade I got was the one that lets you recharge your O2 in pressurized environments. Super useful, and gives me a reason to do what I can before venting the atmosphere
'Let me just pull off this atmospheric processor.'
You mean...the air conditioner?
legionaireb They usually are called “atmospheric processors” in sci-fi (vs. actual NASA product would be mostly a “carbon dioxide scrubber”). Note that carbon dioxide scrubbers don’t usually create oxygen or nitrogen, or other contests (H2O) you would need to breath. Air conditioner would just regulate temperature and possibly moisture content; but wouldn’t be useful to you if you have to start from a vacuum, or stay alive…
@@iNetRunner I applaud you for your in-depth and well informed comment...
...but you seem to have missed the point that it LOOKS like a cheap in-window air conditioner.
finally, shack has found a way to (eventually) crash a ship that he hasn't flow yet
I'm just going to say this right now. This game looks awesome. Even more so in learning that some of the developers of the Homeworld series had a hand in it. That ship in your video looks an awful lot like something produced by the Hiigarans.
I find cutting the ships to be so relaxing. Also whenever I process or barge something I think about what kind of ship it could be used for. And I like to imagine by the time you’ve relayed your debt you will be cutting ships made out of stuff from ships you already cut.
I love how this game looks, has that 80's retro sci fi feel
My interest in this game went from -300 to 150. Your sponsorship is really paying off.
Seeing this, I'd love to see a similarly minded ship building game, streamlined engineering, Expanse-like physics and idea. You design ships, get contracts, see how they succeed in their jobs (or how they fail miserably) and get better contracts, military-grade commissions for new flagships, government shuttles or private mogul recreation yachts (or private army) would be the endgame material. There's also tons of hidden storytelling opportunities. Will you give in to corruption? Will you listen to the smuggler ring and add hidden off-the-blueprint compartments to the ships in exchange for a steady stream of smuggling benefits? Will you work for the government, even if they defensive campaign you thought you were contributing to is actually a genocidal colonisation effort? Will you build prison ships or farm habitats? Be good against all odds, be bad and revel in it, or just make a buck in this fucked up galaxy?
Why does this music and opening remind of Firefly. A show that ended to soon
Space Country music
Is that in game music??
killJUMPER313 yup
Reminds me of Starcraft
I'm thinking this has a Rebel Galaxy vibe
Focus Home Interactive is just the publisher for this, the devs are actually Blackbird Interactive which has said Homeworld developers in it. They also made Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak and are currently making Homeworld 3
absolutely, this SCREAMS for a VR mode
I would love a whole series.
Kushan: Did somebody said salvage?
Kroposman 230 someone has to make a Homeworld mod. Heck the publisher for this is blackbird just like in HWDK so they could make a Homeworld dlc where you scrap Homeworld one and two ships. The player could be apart of Kith Naabal or Kith Sommtaw
@@Cooldude-ko7ps the ships already look close enough to HW ships to give me a proper e-peen, but if somebody would make that you'd probably have to lock me up afterwards..
@@karansjet3823 Dont DIE XD
@@karansjet3823 as a fun tidbit of info: the original working title for Deserts of Karak was Ship Breakers, before they had access to the HW license and pivoted to a HW game with it

this is the kind of game i just start up , play my most relaxing play-list and time just flies by
100% worth the money
Oooh really digging this game. The cutting lasers sound is so good. Kinda reminds me off a sci-fi puzzle box.
Hope they implement a light multiplayer and giant ships for it, so we can have a chill stream with Shack and Tex.
That Intro trailer was straight up spine-tingling.
I highly recommend you read through the job application at the start, it's hilarious.
Look at Earth. Florida has sunk into the ocean!
I appreciate this level of future immersion
All has sunk. All but one thing:

finally, florida has been destroy
MadTNTFreak !!! Well they did need to cover up the disappearance of Agent Florida.
@@breeze9819 that's a pro-level pun right there
You salvage sixteen tons, what do you get
? Another day older and deeper in debt.
hey jack, on the mackrels the easiest way to to get into the side portions is to take off the stern of the ship, that opens the side spaces up so you can crawl in to go after the cuting points.
Thanks for a clear and well narrated introduction to the game! I just bought it using your shortlink rather than directly in Steam, I hope that gets you a bit of commission.
This is what happened to all the ships I had on my Eve Online account.
I'd genuinely love a series of this on the channel as I often can't make it to streams
FYI you can use left trigger (or whatever the equivelant on keyboard is) to wind in your grapple beam. It'll pull light objects towards you or pull you towards heavy/stationary objects
"This game kind of screams for VR"
I hadn't thought about it until you said something, but if this game gets VR support I'll finally break down and buy a VR headset.
Hey, you can get at the area between the interior and exterior by cutting off the four cut points on the four points of the wall dividing the interior and thrust part. That way you don’t have to worry about furnace wholesale values or cutting things behind
I cant wait for the eventual multiplayer (built in or modded) because 4 people just dismantling ships together just sounds great
This game NEEDS VR!
"SCV good to go, sir."
"Job's finished."
Now you too can know the feeling of that unknown nameless person who helps reclaim your old ships in Homeworld.
I played this at PAX East and bought it day 1, I'm glad others are enjoying it!
Man, I am hella hyped at the idea of a fully realised VR version of this game. I haven't bought a VR set yet, but I definitely would start saving for one for this game.
When the mechanic is finally introduced to the game, this is what salvage gameplay should be like in Star Citizen.
Hopefully we'll be doing salvaging next year or so. Fingers crossed.
Well, if they hurry they might get it out in time for christmas 2045
It's probably already been mentioned, but there is a scanner upgrade to show modules and systems, it's super helpful! Also, tethers are super useful when pulling reactor cores!
There are so many ship building games out there... Never occurred to me that a game like this would be so appealing. I can see this being expanded to include ships far larger than any in game now. Imagine trying to salvage a ship that is hundreds of meters across/long?
What would be awesome for the game to add later on is the Shipbuilding mode where you can build templates for other users to "rip and tear".
Given how creative some of the internet folk are, we would be seeing our favorites in no time ;)
I got this game today and absolutely love it! I hope it gets more hype so the developers get funding to expand it further. I cant wait to play this some more. Thanks for doing a gameplay of this game.
Hey a little tip for the reactors, yank the floor out the way, and tether the reactor to the barge, most efficient way I've found of getting it out of the way without putting everything in danger
Thanks Shack... this game looks so fun and relaxing... just come home after a long day of work, and start dismantling ships, _just because_.... Thank you for showing me this game, really!
Would love to see more of this on the channel!!
Definitely gonna try this game out! I hope they add a game mode where you can disassemble without a timer. I think the game could be really therapeutic that way.
Love to see more on UA-cam and twitch and I have the game it's so much fun. It's a nice game to chill and chat but also it has a nice diffrent feel everynow and then. As well as a light rush to get the order done and try to get the rest of the ship for more money, mostly for the larger and harder ships you feel the pressure.
Hey shack, when dealing with the reactor always use a tether! Makes it so much easier and worry free
extracting a reactor at 300mph with a tether? no problemo =)
I like this being a mini game in a larger space sim. This could be a full priced DLC for a space sim which increases your money and gives access to special loot that you have to loot from ships, completely optional DLC.
I can confirm. This game is a lot of fun. Its chill and cerebral once you have a thruster enhancement and an additional o2 tank.
I’ve never even seen the intro but that prayer got me hooked
Really hope multiplayer will be a thing in this.
I can see myself and my family tearing apart a ship for money just like space engineers.
I can also see shack and wasted making a playthrough of this should it happen.
This looks like a pretty cool game, I can see myself playing it to unwind and relax only to have everything go wrong and get killed by explosive depressurization, they choose the right man to cover this, best damn salvage team in the verse
my god it is just something when you ad country music to space IT FEELS SO COOL :D
It’s the new “wild west” frontier humans crave. That’s why I think it fits. Our world is very monitored and lots of laws in place to prevent everything. There’s danger but freedom in untouched lands or in this case, space
@@BanditoBurrito Dude exactly! thinking about the future the lucky bastards that get to do this for real lol
Looks cool.
This could be a first step to a larger space game, just released in bits.
Games like this and starbase we really see starships come to life.
Well yes, but actually no. The reverse of "come to life".
I love how honky-tonk plays if your radio malfunctions!
Looks super fun. I think something that could be really interesting, as a game mode option at least is if there was a sort of turn-based multiplayer with it on 15 minute timers. So you could have like multiple ship options available. After you do your 15-minute shift it gets sent randomly back to the selection lobby and someone else gets to work on it during their shift. And you work on a different ship. Not the whole gamebase in lobby, like 50 maybe. Maybe in the ship selection lobby you actually have to bid on the salvage rights or something as well.
Alternatively it's put you with one other person and you're working on two ships back and forth. You work on ship 1 they work on should 2. And then after 15 minutes you swap which ship you're working on, to kind of show like the "night shift" working on it while your not their so to speak. I think it could create an interesting dynamic where you're somewhat competing for the best parts. Maybe if you turn in the parts you get the full price and your coworker only gets some % value of the part on the start of their next shift on the ship to encourage people to finish a complete salvage during a session. This could scale up to a crew style also. It's like two teams of three each or two teams of four each etc. Would still keep the current solo gameplay style as well in like a campaign mode of course.
I will get this now. And I learned one thing from this video.
Empty ship of air then do not do what you did and go to the inside parts first.
It seems it would be more efficient to take off all external hull panels and then work on the internals.
12:45 you can just teather the reactor straight to the barge and it will be pulled out automatically no worries.
The tools are straight out of dead space. Love it!
You can't take the sky from me.
You wanna know what be cool If they added a update for you could possibly get a military ship to scrap
You know... this actually looks like it could be some relaxing fun.
I have never played any mechanic sim but man, I love the shipbreaker. There is a great potential.
I KNEW there was a Homeworld vibe coming off the art style. Do you remember there was a Strategy game called Shipbreakers that gave off a Homeworld vibe, and was then actually bought and turned into Deserts of Kharak? I thought the game was far too fore-shadow-y, but I liked the original concept, this is gold. Also reminds me of Titan A.E, since the protagonist was a ship breaker.
Hope to see more of this Shack.
I feel like this whole game should be a feature in space engineers. Join an npc faction, tear down ships, earn space credit.
Nothing like coming home from a bad day at work to sit at my computer and do some work.
Watching Jack play always makes me feel better about myself.
Subscribed in the hope of more videos of this. EDIT: Also, I saw you play this two days ago and bought it the next day.
Well, looks like a promotion from Viscera Cleanup Detail... Movin' on up!
I'm gonna have to pick this one up.
this game should have had cosmic castaway as a song that plays
*you walk along the outer hull as the song fades in*
*you find the spot you want to cut, you start your tool up and begin cutting*
"lose my mind to the chemical freeway, coming up on overload, losing sure is easy but i am not more"
*you finish cutting and kick off the seperated part of the ship*
"-buuut iiiiiiiimmm noooooot brooooookeeeen, in myyyyy dreeaaam iiiiii win out here im nooooothin' - a cosmic castaway!"
45s in and it already has a great vibe
Thanks for this great review! Definitely looks like something I’m going to pick up! Seeing tons of ads for it on Tiktok
My headcanon is that our character here is also the main character in Subnautica paying off his debt after he came back from 4546b.
Another little connection to Homeworld. The original project name of Deserts of Kharak used to be Shipbreaker, but it changed later in development.
This game looks great! We need more space games in general as it is.
It's like the survivor of Subnautica is workin off his debt as a Shipbreaker.
I love the ANSI stuff and the amber display colours :)
I love these games that are like just common jobs but ina a fantasy/sci fi world
that would actually be fun if this game had a counterpart game where people would design ships, space engineer style and get points for salvagers who die during disassembly!
I would like a space station salvage & repair/defense version of this in a future update! Thanks for the great content as usual ^_^
12:45 "Remember partner, tethers are your friend."
I bought this a minute after it came out and am hyped to see what they add in the future
