Just a helpful suggestion: when teaching beginning gardeners how to proceed, it's wise to distinguish between planting and sowing. Installing plants in the beds is planting. We plant plants, we sow seeds. This distinction makes communication so much better with those new to gardening. Still frozen here in the northeast, lucky you in a warmer area.

I`m on a small fixed income. My goal is providing my own food just in case that`s all I have. I have absolutely no faith in the "system" remaining intact. It`s IMPOSSIBLE! I was born in 1965 and I`m convinced we`re in extreme trouble...and not just because of humans...but the outbursts from the sun that will fry the grid, huge volcanic eruptions (forget Yellowstone...it`s the least likely to erupt) that can pause commercial agriculture for years, and space impacts/airbursts. We haven`t been told the truth about how common these events have been in the recent past. In fact, this platform won`t even allow my message if I list further details because these are taboo subjects in mainstream "science." Bizarre! Our time of having it easy is running out fast.
There is no record of past solar events because until humans started stringing wires over long distances, most of the sun's shenanigans didn't affect us. And paper was too precious to record when the Auroras were visible further from the poles than usual!
The evidence in vulcanism is that we've been living in a time of fairly extraordinary peace. How long that will continue is anyone's guess.

The only problem is that the UN and the US dept of agriculture now know the location of your garden what and how much you planted.
It's offset by the number of people who are now growing their own garden.
So satisfying so see seeds going in- I live in Ohio so its a tad early (tho I am experimenting with some early season stuff). But a good reminder to get my plan together for starting seeds. My context this year is reclaiming garden space that has been largely neglected the past two years in the wake of a house fire. Crazy excited to get my hands back in the dirt!

Jang seeders have a great reputation among market gardeners that are working with beautiful clean permanent beds with lovely loose soil. All the sticks and things you're moving out of the way with your hand will confound the Jang seeder (or the Earthway, as I have).

Our site is in Michigan, southwest corner, not far from Lake Michigan. It's February as I type this and we have walking onions and garlic sprouting, only three months early. Planning the garden is a whole lot more than knowing what you can plant when ;) Like all that layout stuff and deciding what goes where ;)
In my experience, people seem to have the most trouble figuring out WHAT to plant and WHEN. The point is to show them that gardening isn’t difficult and accessible to everyone.
I'm carnivore too and have been trying to decide what to plant! I'm still in an urban area but going to be moving in a year or so. I love to garden and was thinking I'd have to give it up, thanks for reminding me I can grow food for my animals!!
No problem! My wife and baby aren’t carnivore so they will be able to eat what I grow.

My granndpop used to look at our bare feet and tell us how many seeds to plant between how many " child's feet" in the garden. All before i was 7 years old.

I would love your ideas on clandestine gardening. Meaning using edible plants and flowers, and most people would not recognize his food.. I have a friend with a 40 acre farm. I’m also thinking how you could plant things in the woods that are edible and don’t require a lot of maintenance. Since the central planners seem to be hell been on starving us!
A clandestine garden is pretty easy. Most people don't recognize anything in a garden other than tomatoes. You can grow food right out in the open and people won't recognize it or eat it if they did. It wasn't wrapped in plastic.
I never have good luck with carots, but i keep trying. Lol. Trying to plant more for rabbits this year. Fingers crossed.

P.S. great thing about garlic is you will probably never have to buy it again. It pops up EVERYWHERE!

Maybe some sunchokes in the last bed for your pigs? Some cattails in the bottoms of your swales would be cool too.
My gf and I went carnivore about a year ago and it’s completely changed our lives. Just be aggressive with your electrolytes. I started getting some pretty crazy muscle cramps at night. Would love to know more of your story especially since meat eating can be a little taboo for some permies.

I mostly went carnivore because I have horrible seasonal allergies. This is the only diet that completely eliminates seasonal allergies for me. I know it doesn't sound like much, but there were some nights where I couldn't breathe due to inflammation. I drink salt water every day. I'll up the intake when it starts getting real hot out.
Hey, SGB. Good crop choices for early starting. As my feeble mind keeps asking me, "where is his cover board over the carrots?" Supposedly helps the germination. I'll revisit that detail soon.
For others reading this, Asperagus, once planted, you need to wait until the 2nd year, sometimes, the 3rd year before harvesting.
Will you be doing any tree grafting in the future?
Also, a BIG THANKS for the blade sharpening video! I didn't get a chance to comment on it. The machete and hand axe sharpening is a big help to me. We are suppose to get a dump of snow tonight so I'll use some indoor time to do some sharpening tomorrow. 👍

I didn’t do the cover board because I’m not going to be able to visit the site everyday, due to consultations, and I didn’t want the boards to stop any rain hitting the seeds. I don’t have much hope for the carrots but I figured it was worth a try until the warmer weather.

I just got it from a local farm store.
Do you have any other apple trees around for pollination? Mine were lackluster for years until i added two crabapple trees to the mix. Now they all produce like crazy! Pink lady apples do really well in our area, Henderson/Long Branch of east texas
Oh absolutely. Once the trees put on leaves, I'll do a tour of the fruit trees on the swales!

Where are you located in TX? I'm in Central TX, zone 8b/9 and my land in east TX is the same zone, even though we get 14 inches more of rain there .
We're in Dekalb, Tx. About 2 hours East of Dallas.
What was the third fruit tree variety? If it's not an apple, what is going to pollinate your apple tree?
Stephan trio are apple , pear/plum and 3rd nitrogen fixer. I have ordered seabuckthorn for my N2 fixers as they produce berries.
I planted a Peach, Apple, and Pear. I’ll be filling the nitrogen fixing role with bushes or shrubs.
I've planted carrots 5 times in the last year.. None have ever come up..

I have a dilemma I cannot have live stock I know goats can take care of poison ivy I have tons of it and have tried to get rid of it how can I still grow my food in permaculture it pops up everywhere even when I did regular gardening thank you
Your best bet will be making compost and then compost tea, and applying it to the soil. Change in the soil biology will inhibit the poison ivy from growing.

@@lauriehall7841 it's best not to. I accidentally composted some poison ivy and got a really bad rash a year later when working with the compost

With those goals, why are you choosing carrots at all? They're a notoriously difficult to start crop, while something like a tillage radish, or forage turnip, are perfectly good animal feed and virtually no care crops.
Just experimenting really. It’s just occupying space until warmer weather crops can be planted.
You can use your hand as a measurement but why don't you use a planter ruler that you can construct yourself. I saw a UA-cam market gardener using something that impressed me. I wouldn't be that keen on microbes getting into my hand, thinking of tetanus and anaerobic bacteria or breathing in fungii .
That would be just another thing to carry around. If tetanus was legit then every farmer in the US would be dead.
