I love how real and relatable is your vlog! It’s so refreshing to see an honest portrayal of MFA life, and your passion for writing really shines through. Thanks for sharing good contents, Shaelin! ❤
Sounds fascinating and also a huge undertaking, requiring you to work very hard. Remember to take breaks and if you need to let other things in your life go a little while you do the MFA, don’t be afraid to do so or you might burn out! Here endeth my maternal two cents 😅
Please give us more of these MFA vlogs 😭 I’m doing my masters for clinical mental health and even though it’s unrelated to your program, I can imagine myself being more motivated to do all my readings and papers by watching your videos. And your style of videos is so real and down to earth. I love you!
So glad you're posting again!! What you're doing is so cool. The fact that you're still filming, editing, and uploading while being a full time student and more is a feat! I loved your videos explaining word choice and atmosphere. I rewatch them all the time and I can't thank you enough for how you've helped mature my prose.
This is giving me such wonderful nostalgia for the time I did an art masters degree-the readings were also insane, but so informative! I wish I could go back and do another degree. Enjoy the journey and look after yourself!
I've been out of university for a year for mental health reasons and that opening clip about drowning in readings and weekly assignments instantly flashed me back to how overwhelming it all was. I hope you manage to balance juggling all your masters classes well!
haha I won't lie...the intensity of the workload hit me like a bus in the first month and I was so overwhelmed, but I've adjusted now and also suspect this will be my busiest semester since I had my teaching skills course (apparently the most intense course of the program), my funding application which was soo much work, and my elective. I'm excited for things to calm down a little bit so I can work more on my thesis!
So cool, Shaelin! I desperately want an MFA in creative writing but I’m way too poor (the joys of living in the US) so I’m living vicariously through your journey😅good luck with everything, your flash fiction trilogy sounds super cool!
Twine!! I absolutely love interactive fiction, Twine in particular. It often feels like no one's heard of either, so it's really cool to hear about it getting some attention. I'm constantly introducing my peers in creative writing and computer science to Twine and interactive fiction in general (have been for several years). I've actually taught some Twine lessons to kids through a volunteer program associated with my university. It's really fun seeing them get all excited about the stories they're creating.
@@annislander it seems like such a cool platform! I got to workshop a prototype of a twine story this semester and it really opened my eyes to the possibilities of interactive narrative
As an Education MA student currently working on her dissertation, hearing about you reading million long page documents on trauma informed pedagogy was too real 🤣
"It's going to be a beautiful day- just kidding, it’s going to SUCK" LMAO. God Shaelin you're the sass queen but please spare us lol I hope you are not suffering too much with the end of the year coming around, but at least you are suffering in 🌟style🌟 and we are proud of how far you've come 🫶
Good to see you again, im a bit envious of you Shaelin. I wish i could take an MFA writing program but I am sooo behind with my English. Didn't have enough credits to enter uni.
Wow! Thank you for sharing this! Your MFA program sounds totally fascinating. I’m glad you’re getting teaching experience and taking a teaching practicum! I’m sure you’re already an amazing instructor and your future students will be so lucky to have you! 😍 I did my MFA in Screenwriting, but I would LOVE to do another MFA in genre fiction if I could. I really started taking my fiction writing seriously during my Screenwriting MFA. I took a Screenwriting Pedagogy course during my MFA where I had to design my own syllabus and teach a lecture from that syllabus (my syllabus was called Disability Representation in TV, Film, and New Media). I was also like a TA for my MFA advisor and got to design/teach lectures for her undergraduate screenwriting class (actually, you can find one of them online somewhere). I would say, compared to my PhD, my MFA was the best academic experience I’ve had. But I also can’t teach TV writing at the university level yet because I don’t have industry experience! Catch 22! I was the first person in the history of my MFA program to write a TV drama pilot as a thesis (they wanted us to write feature screenplays and I didn’t want to, and fought for writing a pilot, lol), so I remember changing my MFA thesis last minute and having less than a month to write it. I wrote an outline and 3 drafts (also lost a week to pink eye, do not recommend). But anyway, because of me, other students now can write a 1/2 hour or 1 hour pilot with series bible if they don’t want to write a feature. 🥰 My PhD, though. Oof. I wasn’t allowed to teach during my PhD. They never offered me the opportunities and told me I couldn’t do it. I was also promised that I could take classes outside of my department and that never happened either. So, I was always looking for fellowships/programs/workshops outside of school and doing my own creative work because I wasn’t getting what I wanted. Also, I’m probably one of very few people to have a PhD in a social science field and have written an entirely creative dissertation-a supernatural drama pilot I adapted into a fantasy novel-(which very few faculty were willing to take on). Was also bullied/harassed by my PhD classmates for wanting to a creative dissertation. People are so rude sometimes! Anyway, I’m teaching fiction writing workshops online now (not through a university or community college yet, but maybe someday) and querying my PhD dissertation novel. All this to say, I’m glad you’re allowed to do what you want for your thesis and taking teaching skills classes. You’re in a really good position because if/when your book on sub sells (it will! I know it!), you might have a book deal by the time you graduate and that will look really good when you apply for adjunct teaching positions! Alongside your short fiction publications, of course! Also, you mentioned in a previous video that you’re studying queer theory. How cool! If you’re ever interested in looking into disability studies (my area of expertise), I’d recommend looking into the work of Robert McRuer who is a theorist doing work in queer theory and disability studies. You might find something interesting there! Best of luck with the rest of your MFA!
We all need sleep. Let's get some sleep. I continue wishing you luck with school and with The Animal Sense. Oh my god. I kept my comment brief this time. :D
When you read MFA in your internal monologue, you speak the letters phonetically. In this context, M is pronounced as "em", thus needing the 'an' to ensure it flows smoothly off your monologues tongue.
I love that this started controversy because I had to google it before posting the video because I didn't want to make a fool of myself for incorrectly using 'an' despite being an MFA student
"I Will Never Tell You This" is quite remarkable. Thank you.
thank you so much

watching youtube videos instead of writing your thesis is so real (same same same)

'An MFA'? Since when is 'an' used before anything other than a vowel?
in pronouncing the word it would be "an em-ef-ay" so it is before a vowel!
When you read MFA in your internal monologue, you speak the letters phonetically. In this context, M is pronounced as "em", thus needing the 'an' to ensure it flows smoothly off your monologues tongue.
