I can't believe you didn't show the crash into the snow at the end.

@@ericshinkle I know! The gopro battery actually died from the cold and turned off just before the crash. I wanted to see it too. Internal SD was full too ☠️

Holy F%#K, you are a little crazy, haha. I've lost 3 quads up mountains and spent a total of 45 minutes looking before giving up, once. The other two I didn't even think about it. But you are in WAY better shape than me so...
Another great edit, super impressed by the various clips that you put together to tell the story.
About battery monitoring, I swear by the mAh used count in the OSD. I've been able to max out my battery to the point where I get home with about 30 seconds of flight time to spare, and repeat it on different mountains. A spotter / co-pilot really helps, I'll ask them to write down how many mAh to takes to get to point a, then how many from point a to b, as well as how many it takes to get from point b all the way back home. When I get back after the first (usually shortest) flight and I have say 800 mAh remaining, now I know I can do the same route and leave point b 500 mAh later than in the first flight. So If I turned back towards home at 4000 mAh last time, I should be able to turn back at 4500 mAh and still make it home with 300 mAh to spare. To do this you need to have 2 or more identical batteries, fly them in a test scenario all the way down to like 2.9 volts for a li-ion pack. Check the mAh used count in the OSD or post flight stats. This is your MAX mAh count. In my opinion is it way more accurate and precise than using a voltage which fluctuates with throttle use.
For a lipo it is more difficult, you need to fly the pack down while very close to home, as soon as you notice the voltage suddenly dropping really fast, land immediately. It only takes a few seconds to go from 3.4v to 2v at the end of a lipo. Again the point is to get the pack as low as you can without damaging it so you can record the MAX mAh that you can get out of it.
The max mAh count will get lower like you said, on really cold days and also for flights where you push the pack harder.

Falconrad! Thx for watching and giving such good advice. After this incident 6 months ago, I did a deep dive on the batteries and learned a lot from guys like you. Actually my new favorite battery to use has been that 7000mah LIHV that you recommended on your channel. I love the power to weight ratio on that battery and can pretty reliably use about 5000-5600mah safely. At some point I am gonna do a Canada trip, maybe we can meet up and kill some crags bruther!
Also check this flight out, you are probably one of the few who can actually appreciate it.

man if you can find your quad then I can haha. I lost signal when I just barely went behind a mountain. (just a 5in quad not long range) and it fell somewhere off the side of a canyon road down

Love your flights! Those mountain shots, I gotta make it out there to fly. One word of advice, as bad as it sucks, if I know I am definitely not making it back, I land it so I know exactly where it is. It seems like you only have seconds to make this decision, so I make sure I do this, and maybe land by a noticeable landmark of some sort. Nobody plans to run their battery out, it happens,I learned this the hard way as always.

Haha yea I obviously learned the hard way too! After this crash I decided that your advice is definetly the best thing to do! I've learned a lot in the last 6 months about the batteries and how to tell when how far I can go. In this case I was only charging to 4.1V per cell instead of 4.2, also the battery was super cold and lost some of its charge. Thx for the support sir!

I had this exact thing happen last night, I made it as far as I could, and just dumped it in a bush. It took about 20 minutes to get to it, but no damage at all. I did see a big ass rattlesnake about 6 feet away. well I heard it before I saw it. I did find out that air tags are worthless for tracking. I have a Marco Polo. Older tech but it works
