I have his first CD he made at 12 or a bit younger. Vitamins, drinking water, a special diet of food CAN NOT make a kid of 8 , 10, 15 years this good with a guitar, banjo or mandolin. W. A. Mozart was another kid of that age that was remarkable, composing music and playing sophisticated stuff that was at a totally unbelieveable level. Young Chris here is at an unbelieveable level as well.
He already showed sparks of his genius. Yes, he missed a couple of notes. But he was 8, and playing in the OPEN category. Of course, now he's the best mandolinist ever (without a doubt).
Kinda not fair to the rest of the contestants is it? You only see this once in a generation. A prodigy that makes it look so easy. He would grow up to be the best mandolin player in the world. I’m fortunate to have lived to hear him.
I think this proves that Chris Thile is an alien. No earthling can possibly play this smoothly at eight years old. WTF.
Wow, this explains a lot! 8 years old!? Clean, good tone, consistent timing, confident up the neck... Unreal for that age, great playing for any age!
Wow! And a super nice The Gibson vintage mandolin at age 8!

Super-interesting to see what someone who was on his way to becoming a virtuoso musician was like on his way there.
Born to play mandolin. I heard him at Grass Valley that same year, drawing a crowd around a picnic table. MacArthur Genius Award winner in the bud.
Amazing just how good his timing was at the age of 8. Wow what a picker!
Wow! Amazing old footage.
Thanks, appreciate the kind words.
Wow
Saw them playing this song in 1990. Chris is one year younger here! Awesome.
Nice !.....
At present he may not only be the best mandolin player in the world but the best overall musician.
I misread your comment to say “he may not be the best mandolin player in the world”…what a difference a word makes. 😂
So good!! 👏
Age 8 in the advanced field! :)
OMG this is wonderful ..
I still can't play as good at 40
Saw him last night in Portland, ME. That boy can still pick a mean mandolin!
Agree 100% Tell a friend to tune in.
He’s the GOAT and it’s not even close

matur suksma
Ridiculous!!! 🤯
did he win?
I think I might have just only learned to spell 'mandolin' by eight.
