It being too thin was my first thought when Dell announced it. I love the way it looks, but the performance could have been so much better. Maybe after a couple of revisions, I will replace my m15 r3, but it would have to be absolutely amazing since I'm already in love with my current laptop.

I just had to replace my CPU fan just yesterday, the bearing in the fan wore out, iv had my laptop for over a year and used daily on heavy games. She runs hot somtimes but If I'm running heavy games I keep my room cooled and put a fan on, on top on having a cooling station for the laptop itself my thermals stay below 95 to 100 on the cpu, not the best in the word but hey intel says it's fine to run their chips this way, feels dirty but it's stable. I love my m15 r3, honestly can't trade it up even thou the rtx 30s are tempting, I can everything I need to do with my rtx 2080 super max.

No. The XPS15 tops out at 3050 Ti 45W GPU. That's nowhere close to good enough for someone looking for a laptop to serve as both a day time productivity beast and a night time gaming rig. I bought it for that use-case. I've had it for a month and I think it's sizing is absolutely perfect.

I mean... you could go with the Alienware Area 51m R1 or R2 lines, somewhat transportable but also swappable CPU/GPU and maximum performance at very low temps (63/65 Celsius while gaming)

@@fsgrgrrgrerh5085 Take It from someone who has owned said laptop for two years 9900k / 2080, this isn't true at all. Dell gimped this system massively because the thermals kept killing GPU's. They have put a hard thermal limit of 79c on the GPU's (which can occur in less than 3 minutes in the right game / settings, trottles to like 20/30 fps until you restart laptop) They stopped selling the upgrade dell form factor GPU's pretty much straight away because they need the stock they do have for warranty replacements of all the burnt out GPU's, try buying one from them. You can't. It's the reason the lineup Is discountinued and they are selling what's left with absurd discounts on their website. All the tech tube review units had a different heatsink, it had more heat pipes. The consumer version was cut back.

@@punishedchris8576 I see, I’m sorry you experienced that, I guess I just got lucky. I owned the 52m R1 before and now the R2 and both times there was no big issues like that. Although the second revision R2 does run cooler (57c CPU/ 65c GPU, max) on a i9700k 2070s config while OC-ing. Maybe a repaste and reapply of thermal pads was the trick?

This is why I go for x17.
Never regret, it's great, even want another one if they release x17 R2 or R3 in the future (and I still have money). It is still heavy and a big boy, but the performance is awesome and the cooling is impressive.
For x15 though, it's unlike Alienware.
The performance is too dimmed and the footprint is not that small or light. I wish they limit the TGP to around 130W because 110W is just too low. I don't really see the point of x15 over other brands like Asus Zephyrus or Lenovo Legion.
The old m15 r4 is better than x15 r1 IMO.

I suppose it was a good move on their part to keep it thinner.
Profit wise it's better for them as they can divert customers who want a high-performance device from X15 to X17, and they also got some not-so-performance people in as this machine is quite portable and extremely sleek.

Legion 7 and competitors are within 0.4LBS weight and have Max-P 165w 3080's and Max P 3070's unlike your wattage gimped laptop, and have WAY more ports with extra ports on the side. And unsoldered ram, you bought a joke laptop

This is fun, but while I have "soldered" not unsoldered ram I have 32GB of it and it's timings are good for not being upgradable. Also know the facts... the m15R4 also has RAM soldered on and can't be removed. I get the lack of ports but then again I am a photographer and I haven't had a problem of not having ports available. I'm glad you have an opinion and I enjoy it but this X15 does work great for me. Maybe one day you will find what's right for you.

X15 with cherry and 64GB RAM would be perfect. And I have not yet talked to _anyone_ who was shopping for a powerful/pro laptop who said they definitely need that 1-2 mm shaved off the thickness.
Gonna ask for the X17 at work (due to a laptop upgrade this year), but would have preferred a 15" with upgradable RAM and the mech keyboard. 😕

Dave, I couldn't help but notice the lack of a Microsoft Surface (studio or pro) review on your channel. Can you review the Surface Pro 8 with a focus on i5 vs i7? I'm torn between the two. I don't want the i7 if the thinness of the device causes it to throttle, and I haven't seen and can't find benchmarks comparing the two. All reviews I've read online were on i7 configurations. It would be extremely helpful if you can do this next. Thanks!

x17 is a great laptop, but it is important to point out the x15 r2 has dramatically increased the gpu wattage compared to the r1. 140w for the 3070 ti and 145w for the 3080 ti. Still runs hot but should provide that top-notch performance alienware is typically known for. I'm willing to bet Dave is going to like the x15 r2 significantly more than the r1

Acoustics largely driven by sealed vs. ventilated case. Alienware chose ventilation for thermal performance whilst Apple chose speaker performance. A big case has room for driver enclosures, so that is a loophole that the slim Alienware X15 can't use.
