Saul Bottcher shines with great skill, honoring Kenny Chou's original piece with a stellar remix delivering spectacular focus on the track's high points.
Epic Games (then Epic MegaGames) was the publisher for OMF: 2097. Diversions Entertainment developed OMF: 2097 and OMF: BG. They had initially contacted Epic Games about publishing OMF: BG and possibly even using Epic's Unreal engine, but no deal was made. As a result, Diversions developed the game and the engine in-house and published OMF: BG through Diversions Publishing and TriSynergy, Inc.
@OmegaCoolsterDX Word. If the custom HAR thing led to a completely imbalanced dominating setup they could ban that in upcoming tourneys. Add different parts into the pool, and keep people thinking on their feet, so there's no dominant ownage HAR. Also you could have specific tourneys like "Micro"/"Collosus" where you need to be under/over a weight limit And specific corporations could run tourneys where you can only use their parts. The possibilities are endless.
I really liked this game especially in beta-phase... When demo came out me and my friend had trained so much we kicked everyone's ass heh. Still 2097 owns this with its creativity. Made in -94. Never thought it would have a sequel.
@MrDevlance That'd be good. A new mechanic I'd like to see is custom robots. Like pick a chassis then there's a pool of arms/forearms/heads/etc to choose from, and you could give the whole thing a paint job to make it look cohesive. Forearm + arm combinations would decide your punch special moves and so on. Weight limits on HARs, a special move gauge to stop abuse that refills over time, stats per part/chassis. It'd be rad. [continued]
Hurrgh... right in the nostalgia! This and the original are instantly recognizable to me, never forget the fun I had playing my friends in 2097. Although I never really liked battlegrounds that much.
@OmegaDude22 When they were making OMF:BG Saul posted the track once he had it done and said that he left a little homage in there and if anyone can find it out. Naturally, I was the first one to guess it right. @ 7:47 - the Nova (Major Hans Kressiack)'s signature laughter.
@Sidis360 you can find 192kbps versions of the soundtrack on X-Bot's OMF site. as far as ripping it from the CD, I'm not sure how it's stored. I sold my copy a long time ago. I may pirate it (I've already bought it once..) to try to get some 320kbps rips. everyone is biased because the 2097 theme was so ace but the BG soundtrack really wasn't a slouch.
Having it over XBLA or similar would be great. In 2097 where you start out in the basic tourneys and work your way up, it'd be similar. Win more games online, get access to higher level tourneys and more money/parts. It could top off with a few ultimate robots that are only available to the best of the best so there's an incentive to keep fighting and getting better. Obs'ing a tourney with the 8 best players in the world, using HARs you've never seen before... that'd be epic.
Diversions just had too few people to pull off a game of this scope I guess. They should seriously consider doing a deal with a big developer to make a new game. The OMF universe has so much untapped potential and it'd be a shame to have it die after BG.
@Phur3ouZ OMF:BG was much harder skill-wise than OMF:2097. I think it took many 2D fighter players by surprise when they started tilting the AI upwards.
@zaelie: I can agree with you on the soundtrack, it has it's moments and I'd like to get a copy, or at least figure out how to rip it from my game. I'm one of the few that enjoyed the game, at least for a while. It didn't have the same grab that 2097 did though. I could barely bring myself to complete BG once as opposed to the dozens of times for 2097.
@OMCDX I don't agree with your opinion of "epic basically killed many of their game series" as it is a stupid remark that is simply untrue. Why didn't they continue to churn sequels for their lead games? No idea. I could only guess that they decided it will be bad business to pursue such path and instead chose to undertake fresh endeavours and I'll give them that: they're one of the few companies that keep producing new IPs instead of sequels, which is a good thing in this industry, really.
Epic only published OMF2097. Diversions developed the games. But since the convo is about Epic... You need to realise that they were just as financially motivated back in the day. They're a business. Jill was meant to go head to head with Apogee's Duke. Jazz was meant to be something as good as Sonic on the PC, not to mention it ripped off Bucky O Hare's char design nearly verbatim. Unreal was meant to lock horns with Quake. I love the old games too but they're still being the same Epic now.
@DozerfleetProd Actually, that would be fantastic yeah. I'm a fan of animes with epic plotlines and twists and giant mecha duking it out since the impact of each hit dealt is far bigger than in any other fightscene without 50 tons of walking steel. OMF's storyline had great potential but indeed it was ignored and instead we have some of the blandest videogame movies ever. :(
Of all the 90s fighting games out there with loads and loads of characters, OMF had the storyline most effortlessly translatable to film. So why the [insert expletive] did OMF not get one? Mortal Kombat got two films, and (if you count that 2009 debacle,) so did Street Fighter. Why, then not OMF? Even an anime would have been something. The characters in 2097 look animesque anyway.
when i try to play the game i can go into main menu and everything but when i qctualy start a match the screen is completely white, except for the oppenents health n stuff. Can any1 help me out?
I was actually suckered in to buying this retail because I loved 2097 so much. The first 50 seconds or so I was cringing hard like wtf is this bullshit, then when it went into the oldschool remix things suddenly felt really calm and alright. The game still sucked ass though, unfortunately. There were a few sweet songs on the soundtrack though, like Crystal Cold and Snakeirons. No one has them on youtube though because everyone unanimously hates this lol.
They contacted Epic about licensing the Unreal engine for the game, but it didn't work out. As a result, they switched to an in-house engine. Clunky controls kinda ruined BG for me. Otherwise it was a pretty good game.

This needs to be on Spotify. And the game & dev tools should be released on GOG. That'd be awesome like this theme. It could also be Epic (wink)
Man I wish people would still play this to this day i fucking love it :D bring back so many memories
the music from this mixed with the music from 2097 would have ROCKED in the 90's ;-)
2097 - BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER!

@CorriTimigan It's a very good reconstruction. Saul has done a wonderful job at captivating the spirit of it.

@zaelie jill of the jungle, jazz jackrabbit and unreal tournament-- three games i thought i'd never hear of again
Was that Jangles guy from the screenshot actually in the game? I haven't played it in probably seven years and don't remember him.
this is pretty good actually, i like the drums part
I heard this one before the older version...I prefer this one.
Its a nice remix of the Original Theme :)
Can't wait to see the movie version with Hugh Jackman, I hope they keep the main theme song.
Hitman says; OMF 2097 is the best there was, the best there is and the best there ever will be!
Diversions just had too few people to pull off a game of this scope I guess.

1:26 dopeness starts
@OmegaCoolsterDX
It's a shame that we;ll never see a game like this :(
Maybe in the year 2097, lol.
it was made in 2003 and it exists...
@Phur3ouZ OMF:BG was much harder skill-wise than OMF:2097.
I think it took many 2D fighter players by surprise when they started tilting the AI upwards.
I like this one a bit more, don't know if it's because I actually listened to this one BEFORE listening to the 2097 one...
@zaelie: I can agree with you on the soundtrack, it has it's moments and I'd like to get a copy, or at least figure out how to rip it from my game.

@lekoro1 Without a confirmation from the man himself, there is no way to call that one.
@OMCDX I don't agree with your opinion of "epic basically killed many of their game series" as it is a stupid remark that is simply untrue.

I listened to the original song and it's good, but personally, i think this one's better.

Can anyone tell me where i can download this song not using a pvp program(i.e. LimeWire) ??
I was actually suckered in to buying this retail because I loved 2097 so much. The first 50 seconds or so I was cringing hard like wtf is this bullshit, then when it went into the oldschool remix things suddenly felt really calm and alright.

LMAO, that looks more like Ibrahim :-D
Actually, it's the glow option you should disable.
the movie with Hugh jackman aint about omf is it?
i like the original better ONLY because of the nostalgia value
They contacted Epic about licensing the Unreal engine for the game, but it didn't work out. As a result, they switched to an in-house engine. Clunky controls kinda ruined BG for me. Otherwise it was a pretty good game.
Nova laughs at 7:45
Ok listen closely at 7:47 and see if you can remember ;D
rr this wa sa good game to bad my copy no longer works
i see a game with my name on it!
This theme is still good, but the original was better. :)
p2p*
i don't think limewire has player vs player combat =P
lol sorry man, lol, i meant p2p
This song was the only good thing about OMF:BG
>felt like an incomplete project more than a game
couldn't have said it better myself. now pretend you paid 50 bucks for it. lol.
i dont trust craks the last 2 times i used one it messed up my computer rely badly
the theme song is the only good thing about this game compared to 2097, other than that, this is a terrible game.
meh, battlegrounds isn't nearly as fun as the original
