I forgot I was even subbed to this channel. Now, I miss Chauncey.
Wait, wait, wait. _Futurama_ is not _The Simpsons_ in the future. _The Simpsons_ is a parody of sitcoms, done as a sitcom. _Futurama_ is a sitcom in superficial structure only. Its content is a parody of science fiction. _The Simpsons_ in the future would look like _The Jetsons,_ where the plot and story themes are from sitcoms, and the sci-fi elements are just wallpaper. _Disenchantment_ is a parody of high fantasy and it's not a sitcom of stand-alone episodes, its a long-form narrative comedy. It's nothing to do with _The Simpsons_ except for the drawing style. It's basically _Groo._
You're right, of course. I had originally written "Groo does Game of Thrones" and changed it to "Groo does Tolkien". Neither seemed quite right and now it makes no sense at all.
Bless the rains down in Africa
Futurama is far from Simpson’s in the future. Honestly ended up better than the Simpson’s.
ENDED better, but the first 8-9 seasons of The Simpsons are some of the best animated tv ever
Really missed this channel, please don't stop putting content on it.
WHERE'S THE ALIEN REVIEW PAUL
i always thought the early seasons of spongebob had a good "that's clever" to belly laugh ratio. basically each 10 minute episode contains a bunch of "that's clever, I'm smiling" moments, and 1 good belly laugh.
Is Disenchantment Any Freaking Good? Not freaking good, but good enough and with potential to grow better.
The comedy doesn't fail to make you chuckle but doesn't manage to make you burst out of laughter. The animation is quite good, the plot is interesting and I love the setting. I agree with you on the main characters and I understand why you don't go into every minor ones but you gotta admit that the secondary cast is great and when one of them show more than once it pays off.
I didn't stop to compare it to Groening's other shows and I think that I like it more for that, but maybe the people young enough to not having watched those shouldn't be watching something with as many adult content as this one.
And about the length of the season I'm more conflicted: it's in binge-watchable format, it was made with another 10 more episodes in mind and it really plays both ways mixing the plot-driven and the stand-alone episodes. Usually animation series take dozens of episodes of shenanigans made to be put in TV reruns before getting to the plot, and this one toyed around with that without needing to. Nobody would have mind if it just followed the plot in every episode.
"The animation is quite good"
Not sure about that. The 3d sequences seem a lot worse integrated than in Futurama and the action scenes are rather choppy and lack the dynamic, were often they just look like the normal cycles accelerated. Which is a budget issue, but for a good production also should be a reason to avoid them in favour of something which can be shown within the existing limits.
The traduction is right on the spot and you do lost at least 3 joke of the season 1 on the vf version but they do not go to far from the English version.
I'm a bonafide Futurama and Simpsons nut. I think I was 7 in 1991 when we first got the Simpsons here in Australia, and watched it ever since, and countless times. Futurama as well. But halfway through it, and I can't make myself watch the rest of Disenchantment for some reason. For instance, they went to the trouble of introducing Elfo's world, but as far as I know, they never went back - that seemed like a fun place, a place for more jokes. Or the pompous prince fellow - by turning into a pig, he's a completely different character, who we don't then see much of him - what was the point of introducing him? As for the animation style, a lot of scenes have this weird 'glow', where there's like a harsh lighting in the middle. I don't hate it, I want to like it, but it all just feels flat.
MattExzy Spoilers ahead
Of the ten first episodes, the middle half can be considered almost filler, because the plot is in the first three and the last three. You can skip the middles ones instead of quitting. They do go back to Elfo's place, and that's great, and the pig has another scene, but that's not that important.
I think I overstimated the animation, I think that's because I was comparing it to the likes of CalArts.
Still waiting on that alien video 2 years later. Hope you guys are still perfecting it
futurama has nothing to do with the simpsons besides the drawing style. nor does disenchentment
Lincoln Noronha
It was made by the same people, had similar humor, had similar off-chute episodes. Futurama’s ‘What if’ episodes, and the Simpsons holiday specials. I’d say there’s a lot of similarities. I don’t know about Disenchantment because I haven’t watched it.
what happened to the (bad) idea of abandoning this channel and only doing these on DFF?
I think TJ saw the light and vetoed Pauls awful idea to abandon a 65k sub channel
2020 Missing WTF Happened to Alien
Cant wait for the Alien review, enjoyed the Hellraiser "What the Fuck Happened?"
Thanks for addressing the big question right off the bat re: scarcity of content recently - haven't checked in with you guys since earlier this summer b/c of that. Glad to hear you guys are just working hard on new stuff and haven't gone away for good! Really enjoy both your and Paul's perspectives on a range of movies.
Re: Disenchantment, I completely agree it's main weakness is the lack of humor - the jokes rarely landed for me. I watched first episode and was a bit disappointed. Figured I'd give it another episode or two. I fell asleep during ep3 and have yet to go back to it. I MUCH preferred Netflix's Big Mouth and hoped Groening could've come up with something that had similar level of belly laughs (if different in tone/setting).
Look forward to seeing more from the Cynics soon - peace!
WHAT happened to Paul? I and I'm sure many others really enjoyed your content brother. Come on back and give us some more, kind of miss you big guy.
Thought this channel was dead. Good to see you guys making videos again!
Happy to see new content from this channel! Started binge watching about a month or so ago. You guys are very funny.
**It just dawned on me that Bean's pet demon Lucy is a nickname. Lucy is short for Lucifer**
This Alien series review is gonna be great. I’m sure it’ll be released anyway now.
Like 65,000 subs in a really impressive time, and Paul just stops posting regular content? What a waste
I really miss this channel man come on paul give us some alien goodness please
It's ok. The characters are incredibly inconsistent and the plots are trying to be universal when they're not but when it tried to tell a story it can and I wanna know whats gonna happen. There. Did it for ya.
0:50 Beautiful H.R. Giger painting back there on your top right monitor..
I literally just found this channel. My first video was “What Happened to HellRaiser” and man..this guy is so true and hilarious! I wish I found the channel sooner to be honest!
Have you seen "Stan against evil" yet? I'm 2 episodes deep at the moment and I'm having a really hard time deciding if I like it or not... it's weird but strangely compelling.
"It's just not that funny." Exactly my feelings. I laugh once or maybe twice each episode.
i enjoyed it. i think its a series that would definitely do better in its 2nd season since this one felt like character introductions and basic plot elements. If there is 1 thing i could do without its the elf character, i also think its weird how they are trying to do a love angle with it and Bean. They need to drop that for sure. I hope it does a story throughout the series like an anime and it does not do episodic episodes like the simpsons does
It started slowish but the last 2 episodes or so hit a good balance between a comedy and serialized plot based show for me. I'm pretty excited for part 2. It's not like the Simpsons was a self evident classic based soley on the first season.
Finally a C for C video. Can we get more pitch wars please
Most new shows do short first seasons and sometimes get longer seasons but the 24 episode season might be gone.
It's a good thing too because most shows cant handle doing 24 episodes, too many of the episodes wind up being just bad. Most shows would improve by having a shorter season with more effort put into each episode instead of just banging out 24 episodes for the sake of having 24 episodes.
A show’s episode count doesn’t need to be arbitrarily inflated to fit a 24 episode mark. A good show uses exactly what they need to finish it, and doesn’t stretch out the story for monetary reasons. Narrative driven shows shouldn’t be 24 episodes long unless the story would suffer without it. Unlike sitcoms and others like it, they don’t have an overarching story that would be ruined if it’s episode count was increased.
hi just subscribed to your channel. I really like your reviews and out looks and movies. Would you please review Winchester? I would love to hear you thoughts on the movie. I think you will really like it. when you have the time and the night call's for a back of your mind wondering night. it can really keep you wanting more.
I agree on the 26 episode thing. I think ten works for some shows but I think a lot of shows are disappointingly short and don't develop like older shows did.
Cinema vs cynics do the castlevania show on Netflixs
I miss Paul's professionally produced and well-researched movie reviews. Good discussion of the show, Disenchantment... I'm still getting into it. It's taking some establishment of characters. I personally relate to the Elf Boy. I see aspects of myself in his story! :D I'm hoping it will get more enjoyable.
Hav you watched big mouth TJ? It was so refreshingly raunchy I laughed my ass off. Totally unexpected how much I turned out to like this show. And I found it rigt after disenchantment so it cured my post mediocre binge watch sickness XD
Disenchanted had me and the wife bored to tears.
Final Space, conversely, was REALLY funny!
Not animated, but also excellent was Insatiable. I couldnt stop laughing.
Do yourself a favor and watch "Shakes the Clown". Most underrated movie I've ever seen that seems to be right up your alley.
For me it was very slow but by the last episode I was like 'Fuck, what happens next'
Disenchantment is just okay, but I love the art style they use for the setting, the character art style is just generic, simple, Matthew Groening characters
I am really looking forward to the Alien saga.
Thanks for the review. I was considering watching this but the “Simpson” type humor ran out decades ago for me so I was leery. You pretty much outlined exactly what I was afraid of the show being, which sounds like a waste of time.
Not only the ten episode seasons but the fact they fucking cut 1 season in 2 parts with a couple months separating them in between
Thats because seasons are determined by budget and time, no longer pre-conceived numbers.
Know how star trek would have alot of episodes of filler that were bad because they ran out of ideas?
Know what "filler" is? Its an episode that takes up those extra episodes.
So seasons are determined by individual productions now, NOT some corporate needing to fill a couple month's worth of episodes to fill a time slot.
I wish there was more content, but as the case with things like rick and morty, they focus all of thier energy into fewer episodes to create better content.
It really just means they dont have alot of ideas for Disenchantment, besides broad series strokes, and not individual ideas.
Overall i agree with the assessment of Disenchantment tho
Hey guys.
Love the video btw.
Here's the thing... Uh I smoked weed... And i am freaking out.
What do I do?
30 seconds seems like an at random times.
Only 4 monitors.
Have you seen Final Space?
I really enjoy this type of video, but they're not produced consistently enough.
Can’t wait for the massive aliens review!!! 😍 yes!
I like that Evil Dead wallpaper.
I’m a horrible parent and a cool dad. I let my 4 yo watch the 1st episode before I knew and made her mom tell her she couldn’t watch it anymore
Let her watch. There are worse role models than Bean. I mean, to be fair she is a violent and unpredictable alcoholic, but assuming your daughter's mom doesn't get turned to stone she should be ok.
I think you stopping her from watching this makes you a horrible parent.
I say you should let her watch it and let her see different things, hear different jokes and see different aspects of life. Especially let her develop a sense of humor.
Waiting until they're teenagers before they get to experience 90% of life is just too late, tbh, because it'll make it harder for many people to adapt to reality.
Let them watch things. Let them ask questions. Let them experience most things. That way they will grow up strong.
How’s come it took me 3 weeks of watching this channel to realize it was hosted by TJ Kirk
I couldn't get pass the second episode... A comedy/cartoon that can't make you laugh ain't worth watching.
Its cool, my roomate and i, and our friends keep calling it disenchated. I think the only reason its called disenchantment, is that its a state of mind thats happening to the characters as opposed to a state of mind thats already passed.
I find its a mixed bag
It's not that great but again, I had fun with it. Want to watch something simple and sweet? Go for this one. I think that maybe it needs more time but if not it was again something you can say wasn't a waste of time. ^^
I'm going to give it another try but I didn't enjoy what I saw... but I want to finish it before fully judging
Review starts at 7:44
I'm fine with shorter seasons if the episodes are double length (44 min) like Better Call Saul, but I don't like short seasons with episodes only being 22 mins.
where i can find this deepfried pod ?
Still waiting on the alien review
You can tell TJ is out of his comfort zone here. This should be left to Paul.
We need a WTF happened for this channel
WE WANT PAUL! WE WANT PAUL! WE WANT PAUL!
>"I will talk about 1 side character and 1 side character only"
>talks about 3 side characters
I can't wait until Paul releases that Alien series review!
Hey, you're back!
I like it so far. Season 2 overall plot was strange but still enjoyable. Overall good. Better than current Simpsons worse than Futurama.
I SAW THAT EVIL DEAD PICTURE! groovy.
I got a title idea.
The creature that didn't need to be a double feature, or, Alien...s.
I just got the notification for this... 2 days later!🤷♂️ WTF UA-cam?
And it just dropped 3 years later
I want to like this show, but it just hasn't grabbed my attention yet. I've only watched the first three episodes but I'll give it a chance.
Dude your vocabulary is on point
It doesn't hold up to the better narratives seen in sone of the futuramas or Rick and Morty's better episodes. But it still supplies a steady stream of dumb gags and jokes to get by on.
It gets a lot of critical flak but I'm pretty sure people stumbling through Netflix will love it.
Holy shit I just watched the aliens video. It took him 3 years?
Yes, pallytime/lead singer for theyordles, it is good.
ITs obviously not Futurama. Still, I will check this show out.
My theory is that elfo is a goblin...... not that that theory is really relevant for this video. I do however really enjoy the show; i feel like its humor doesn't wait and anticipate a punchline., you either enjoy it or you don't, and honestly that will always be hit or miss. There are super cool aspects of the show like the fact that the society of Maru is in the background and is relevant from episode one. Bottom line: I'm watching this mid video and making opinion. Watchableness: 8/10 Sleep time make me feel like the everything is "chill": 10/10.
His dad said he was into larger women as well. Elfo's gotta be half oger or somethin.
Finally A cinema for cynics upload God is good Always 🙏🏼😭
This is the only show that made me hate the characters, and actually glad when the “villains” are trying to end the main characters. The worst is Lucy, and I was very disappointed that they didn’t let him die.
Did this retrospective really take more then entire year and counting to make or did he just give up on it?
Yo where’s the wtf happened to alien segment?
Haven't watched the review yet but I personally thought this show was pretty decent so far and think it has some really good potential. Though granted for the majority of the episodes I watched I was high as fuck, it warranted a good chunk of laughs out of me and I found the overarching storyline to be interesting.
Good job, I enjoyed this review 👍🏻
Keep them comin man the hellraiser one was awesome but suffering grrm syndrome taking too long between
I'm with you on that 10 episodes per season nonsense.
I suppose there is 10 episodes because its netflix and they can order 2 "seasons" and the first season is like a test to see what changes to make w/o losing to much time and money.
I agree to me the series is a 7. good but need improvement, give more time and I am sure Matt can deliver.
"I dont mind rambling on instead of having a script", first thing he does is get the name of the show wrong xD
Look forward to the Alien review.
I enjoyed it, but I also went in with low expectations. End up disappointed less often that way.
Anime is also not having 24 episode seasons anymore.
I got that same reaction from looking at the trailer.
I completely disagree with Futurama being "The Simpsons in the future". That's the kind of prejudice I had before watching Futurama, and the characters are so different that you cannot even compare the two series (Futurama being immensely superior in my opinion - fite me).
Futurama wasn't as funny as Simpsons. It often heavily depended on edgy humor which is more attractive to people who haven't reached 18
I heavily disagree, and I was 19 when the first season of Futurama aired.
@@MrConredsX That's your opinion man I found it far funnier. Also, the Simpsons was edgy enough when it came out especially the Halloween specials, drinking, and child abuse.
There is a similar style of humour between all three shows, but the characters are all different enough to...well...make a difference.
I also thought Futurama was "Simpsons in the future". However, I was in middle school when Futurama made it's debut.
