    The governing principle for all our techniques (including the 1 inch punch) is that we should minimize effort / movement. Those particular boards will not break with only 1 inch of impact due to their design; one has to go through deep enough that the teeth are removed from the sockets. However, with an opponent, many finishing/damaging strikes can be delivered with only 1 inch of movement. We try to maximize power while minimizing movement.

    the one inch punch only starts from about 1 inch away but it should drive through the opponents body.. if u stop the movement after one inch only then there wont happen much.. u gotta wanna punch through his body... attack the centre line... the centre line doesnt start at ur front body.. the spine is where u want to go...

    greetings Sifu Belonoha! I've received vol. 1 of your Wing Chun Compendium as a gift over the holidays. I wanted to express my deep gratitude for your hard work and the book it produced. I've been studying Wing Chun and training on my own for a little while and although I still haven't found a teacher, you're book has already helped my understanding of this wonderful system. Peace and prosperity to you!

    I see mastery in not responding to the negative, hurtful, and unhelpful/non-progressive comments, and I find that very admirable. Thank you for sharing this video. Would love to learn more at some point. I believe I drove by a studio of yours (I believe) and it prompted me to look up more info. I studied kung fu for just one year under Master Shawn Liu. Am interested in continuing study and wonder if this would be the right place for me. Will call studio during business hours soon!

    it is nice that you pointed out the purpose of that punching concept, since most people seem to have a wrong idea what it was originally made for (mainly visible bei one inch-punch demonstrations)

    Production Notes: It's September 2009 and we've decided to move forward with a huge undertaking called The Wing Chun University scheduled to launch in late 2012 (yes, 3 years of planning and work). The first step is to start to understand how to make professional quality videos. This video represents my first attempt at what will turn out to be a long road of learning. To get started I needed some new equipment, total cost: about $8,000 (mac/fcp).

  • @SifuWayne
    @SifuWayne  12 років тому

    @Yourjoking999 You're right, the board won't break with a pure one-inch punch - another inch or two was added; it's a limitation caused by the flexibility of the board. However, that small detail shouldn't overshadow the intent of the video which is to illustrate two of the more common problems. When I perform the one-inch punch in a fight situation, I only consume one inch under optimal conditions, adapting as necessary. The goal here is education so some liberties had to be taken.

    @wbelonoha What does this have to do with my question? Nevermind.

  • @outofthebox7

    @wbelonoha Hi!I understand that the goal is education,but not at the expense of accuracy.But I have a "question".How can one use a one inch punch in a fight&know it was only one inch??It's practically almost impossible.
    If we stick to the literal term "1-inch",this means that when my knuckles are in contact with the layer of skin/muscle that CANNOT be slowly*pushed*in any further,it should thrust in exactly 1-inch.No real damage can be done,other than maybe a cut or a slight loss of ballance.

    Sifu Wayne, I have been teaching myself wing Chun for five months now. I believe I'm improving every day or that is my goal anyways. My question, do you have any kung fu brothers in southern california that I may go to and practice wing Chun with them?

  • @SifuWayne
    @SifuWayne  12 років тому +1

    @outofthebox7 I've found through experience that there are many concessions to be made in life as it often is not as easy to draw such hard lines. To say "Education at the expense of accuracy" sounds very absolute. I believe my example was more accurate than inaccurate, more value than harm. Since the equipment didn't exist to provide a pure example, would it have been better if I'd not done this free tutorial? The one-inch punch can be used as an internal hit, but it takes lots of practice.

    I just didn't want to give the impression that training aids are not useful. It's interesting that you chose that second quote, it's a good one for this situation. I've been doing martial arts for just over 30 years. Talk with you again soon!

    They call it 1 inch punch because of the length between the fist and target - ONE inch. Any further movement after that is caused by the inertia and force behind the punch. I don't get whats so confusing about that. You saw the excessive 3-4 inches going through the board, but the distance the punch traveled to make that contact was ONE inch and thats all that matters. Hitting a human like that it wouldn't go in so deep, but the energy would just transfer into damaging the body.

    is it possible do the both the inch and the zero inch one after the other?, (like a double jab) just woundering if that is a legit strike, thank u for the video, very clear explanation!

  • @SifuWayne
    @SifuWayne  12 років тому

    @okudensensei I had to do tests on the boards to find and measure their breaking point. I've found the boards do get weaker and more flexible after some use.

    Currently studying wing chun with gary lam and he rarely talks about the one inch punch o-o... Only thing i know is that one inch punch isn't the concept the concept is to generate lots of force with in one inch punching distance by using your shifting and punching at the same time

    @wbelonoha Do as you please. Question: what do you mean internal hit? You don't mean the Bruse Lee act?

  • @SifuWayne
    @SifuWayne  12 років тому

    While Bruce's dramatic movie comments do hold some merit we also have to recognize that many valuable training tools do not hit back. One example used by some martial artists is "Bob" the training man who has neither arms nor legs.

  • @okudensensei
    @okudensensei 12 років тому

    @wbelonoha, my question to you is where did you get the specifications for that re-breakable board? I have that very same board, and have even contacted the manufacturer to no avail.
    I might also add that your board looks quite worn, as is mine, and they get much weaker with use.

  • @DarthLucasx

    original term of the one inch punch is the vertical fist punch

  • @SifuWayne
    @SifuWayne  12 років тому

    When you ask about strengthening the punch, do you mean bone density (a harder fist) or just plain hitting harder?

  • @Purewater777
    @Purewater777 13 років тому

    Q: Why do they call it 1 inch punch?The actual punch IS NOT an inch in movement.Proof of this,is that you slightly drive the fist through the board. Seeing the angle of the broken board shows at least 3-4 inches.The thrust is NOT 1 inch. It would be 1 inch if the arm could be prevented by some means from thrustingmore than one inch forward.Right? -I'm not being a smart alec,I just find so many things wrong in martial arts all over the place. &this has to stop. I believe the instructer agree.
