This is one of the most entertaining and insightful Johnny Carson shows that I have ever seen. Kirk Douglas and Johnny Carson are gone now. We toss around the word "icon". These two men are what the word icon means. We are fortunate to be able to watch them on this video.
Huge respect for Kirk. His foot on the accelerator intensity & his fearless physical style recalls the great James Cagney, so to hear his appraisal of Cagney here is very moving. Kudos to whomever posted this clip...

After he reached 80 years old, he began to look very old IMO. His last 20 years, he looked extremely old, he got plastic surgery to look much younger and it didn't work but thanks to God, he didn't have dementia or alzheimer's until the end.

There is only one Johnny Carson. The best of all time. Kirk Douglas, one of the top ten actors of all time and a total class act!! Two Icons talking together and not spoon feeding each other a lot of BS which is the way night time talk show are nowadays!

Never would have thought at that time that he would live to be 103 years old. He was doing something right, throughout his life, unlike Carson, who smoked like a chimney. I’d like to watch all of Kirk’s pictures, good or bad, from the first, to the last. RIP, Kirk!

Kirk was truly an amazing human being. The way he did the wooden leg for Scalawag was actually simpler than I initially thought it was, even though it must have been painful for him to have that one leg bent and kept that way for a long period of time shooting scenes. I don't know if anyone could have imagined after seeing this at the time that Kirk would end up surviving a stroke and actually make a good recovery from it in his older years and be able to continue acting.
So funny you bringing up The Vikings, just last week, two nights before he died, I watched that film again, and it IS brilliant. But during the film I said to myself "Kirk is the only one of the major stars/characters from this movie who's still alive." And sure enough two days later he dies! I shoulda kept my damn mouth shut!
I gave him three stars because of his temper and the way he treated Michael. Michael Was very underappreciated. As well as inspirational. If anything I see why now? But Kirk was an amazing actor. I heard he stood at the John Wayne. And that's why John Wayne changed a little bit. Now that's a Hollywood Story. My condolences when he passed and all the respect to the Douglas family. They're good people.
Not only was Kirk a terrific actor, he gave so much in philanthropy. And he helped to end McCarthyism in Hollywood by hiring blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo for Spartacus!
One of Kirk’s funniest movies is THE VILLAIN …. An outlaw (Kirk Douglas) eyes a stagecoach and a beautiful woman (Ann-Margret) but is foiled by a handsome stranger in white (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Initial release: July 27, 1979…..
