Well, it looks like y'all had fun, so everybody wins. Honestly both machines were a little weak for my standards, but that doesn't mean they can't be improved on. Maybe your viewers will have some ideas. Thumbs up for FIRE! I'll have to check out more of your videos. You earned a subscriber. It's kind of hard to compare apples to oranges, "sharps vs stones" but I would Not want to get hit by yours. I might take a hit from Fort in the Woods air cannon.
I was definitely hoping for more power but i am of course limited by the material i chose. I'm hitting the limits of PVCs power as a bow. Lol yes if you got hit by mine you are dead... I'd be curious to know what the fps and energy impact etc stuff is of both projects. I'm planning on calculating that in a future video
@@jakemakes Looks to be about 80 feet per second, from the video. About a .6 second flight time at 50 feet. Weigh the bolts, and knowing the speed, you can calculate kinetic energy, Joules of energy and ft pounds of impact. Knowing the draw weight, you can get the energy efficiency.
You win this easy. I’m sorry - but the sheer penetrative strength of that one that was inspired by Roman Throwing Spears was ingenious. I am already sketching designs for a similar airbolt I’ll be making for my big bore airgun. On another note - I kinda want to build a billiard ball canon the CORRECT WAY (while still being legal). That is to say: I wanna take my SCBA tank and have it dump a quarter of its load @ 5,000 PSI into a smooth bore barrel with a gravity fed (with a one way valve of course) hopper style magazine sending billiard balls out the business end. Imagine the fun that could be had - then imagine the thousands of ways that a billiard ball can be manipulated and altered as a projectile. Anyway. I digress. I really want to make this into an airbolt though. That Roman inspired design is too cool.
With some great thought, I ... (drumroll please 🥁) ... think ... (come on people show your anticipation 👏) ... that ... (there we go 🙌) ... you both won the MOST IMPROVED award!!! 🎉 I don't that we'll this other award 🏆 here, the Romans won it centuries ago.
You might could make some shorter, heavier bolts for it. Maybe have a head kind of like the pilum, where the head is wider than the shaft, so it'll penetrate easily. Only instead of a wooden shaft and duct tape fletching, it could be all metal, with fletching sharpened like a broadhead. You'd have to make the head pretty big, and the fletching pretty thin to keep the center of mass forward, but it could probably work. That or make the head out of something more dense. You might could also add a loop on a bolt somewhere so you could tie some paracord to the thing.
Who do you think won?!

And i've got a bunch of ideas for improving the ballista later on

Oh you lame cop out 😅
turns out Jake you won in all categories.
The spear also was meant to crumble and become unusable by the enemy, if the thrower missed.
