My families roots are from Gokanosho., defeated samurai that fled to this area. My great grandfather left and settled in Okayama becoming a rice farmer during the 1800's. I visited in 1985 with hopes of finding information, but ran into dead ends due to the loss of temple records from a fire. We took our family name from Gokanosho.
Thank you for sharing. Ed Goka

First explored the area in 1982 when a friend, Kumagai-san, guided me up after getting my first motorcycle. Since then I've come every chance I get. The main downside is that most of the friends and people I got to know have since passed away or moved on and the places I frequented have shut down.

The Heike-Genji conflict was during the Gempei War which was from 1180-85. The Sengoku Jidai did begin in 1467 but the Heike had already fled into this area 3 centuries earlier, after their defeat at the battle of Dannoura (Shimonoseki Straits) in 1185, when the Emperor Antoku drowned.
