The net is amazing! It arrived yesterday and all of our staff have been admiring it in the office. We can't wait to show this beauty off on Saturday evening!
I believe it went for $450! So happy it was able to help support their work. It’s fun working with conservation groups, and I have another from Montana lined up soon!
You absolutely should give it a shot! You really don’t need half the machinery I use her to make something beautiful, and judging by the caliber of work on your channel, I have no doubt you’ll make something extraordinary! Thanks for watching!
That is a bit from the business “Nets that Honor the Fish”. If you Google that and add in: router bit you should pop up exactly what you’re looking for.
I use a standard exterior polyurethane spray, but seal with two coats of Dalys Ship n’Shore prior to top coats. I often do 4-6 coats of spray and sand between coats with 800 or 1000 grit to get that final coat silky smooth
Thanks! The vinegar/steel wool mixture is an oxidizer and access to air will cause it to rust. The steel wool actually breaks down in the acidic vinegar (if it’s a fine steel wool) and the result creates the reaction with the tannins in the wood. Some wood species don’t have the best reaction, like maple, which can become a grayish color unless many coats are applied. Oak on the other hand his tannin-rich and blackens very well. You can actually watch the reaction occur on the first coat, too.
Hi Andrew, thanks for watching and for the kind words! Here's a link to the folks that sell the route bit/bearing setup I use. Very good product and super quick delivery. I too ran into a huge headache trying to track down this setup, so this should save you some time! flyfishingnets.net/collections/catalog/products/custom-router-bits-for-landing-net-construction
Hi Lonnie, sorry for the late response to your note. I got the insert off of Amazon. I'll link to it in the description of the video. They offer a bunch of different swivel sizes, and I usually go with the largest. Thanks for watching!
Another great job. Who did you buy the router bit for the groove from? Thanks for answering several of my questions on various videos. Really appreciate it and keep up the great work.
I got this router bit/bearing steppe from an awesome couple at Nets that Honor the Fish. Here's the link to the exact bit I used: flyfishingnets.net/collections/catalog/products/custom-router-bits-for-landing-net-construction
James - love your work and I’m about to embark on my first net build. I know you had breakage issues with the hoop section on this net, but in general, do you use air dried strips or have you used kiln dried wood? I only have access to kiln dried. If the latter, do you have tips you can share for the bending process…. Thanks in advance.
First off, congrats on jumping into a net build! It’s a ton of fun! As for material, I do use kiln-dried because it’s readily available in my area at my hardwood dealer. I believe a big reason for the breakage is actually two factors: 1) highly figured material has some strange bend characteristics which might not work well in our favor, 2) I think I’ve been going too thick with my strip material. If you shoot for sub-1/8” thick pieces and plan for an extra strip, and set your steam time to 30+ minutes, you should have no problem whatsoever. Hope this helps!
Love your videos. Getting ready to make a form to produce some nets (gifts) for smallmouth bass fishing near your Springfield store. What net material do you use? I see fishpond makes a kit but its not Prime on Amazon. Is it worth the extra $ for shipping? My form on paper is 48" circ. so deciding what size?
I really, really like the Fish Pond nets, and think they're a fantastic choice and worth the shipping. They are also great because they include a waterproof tie-in line and large needle to thread the line. I would base my template off the net basket itself (order the basket you choose first and build your template off that), because it's actually surprisingly difficult to estimate how a basket will want to react to certain hoop designs. The hoop shape may seem simple, but the design (and how the basket sets within it) can vary considerably, plus it can say a lot about your style and taste when it comes to the hoop-to-handle design. Fish Pond provides a good starting measurement for each basket, so basing it off that for a rough idea is a great starting point when choose which to order.
I get these off Amazon and they work well. The 9mm is a good size to connect the lanyard setup to: www.amazon.com/dp/B07MTCCL39?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
Thanks for watching and please share images from your build with me on Instagram! I'd love to show them to others in a future video. @riverbend_woodworks

Fantastic! I really hope it does well!!!
As a guy just getting into net building this video brought tears to my eyes. True artistry.
Thank you! I hope you have an enjoyable net building journey and please let me know if you have any questions or video suggestions!
You’re an artist sir…..wow.
God has blessed you indeed
WOW! What a beautiful, useful work of art from a Master Woodworker! Bravo!
This net turned out amazing!! Love all the intricate detailing!
Thank you! The process took longer than anticipated, but it’s always worth the effort in the end, especially for a good cause.
Awesome!!! How much did the net go for at auction $$$$$$ I'm sure it sold for a huge chunk of money.

I thought about trying a net someday but this is perfection!

What’s that slot cutter bit for the outside of the net? Can’t find one anywhere.

What finish spray do you use bud?

Awesome net for a great cause.
Say I really like your videos. Thank you for posting them. I’d like to know what the vinegar does that has steel wool in it?

Awesome work! Can you provide a link to your groove bit? I’ve been struggling to find one with the appropriate bearings

Love the net! where did you get that brass insert?

This is a really cool project! Where did you get the form from for the loop?
Hi Travis, thanks for the kind words! I actually made the form myself and will be working up a video soon to show the process!
Man that is beautiful! How much did it go for?
It sold for $400 at the auction! So glad it could help support the conservation cause.
@@RiverbendWoodworks super cool!
What did you use as a finish?
For this one it was a gloss spar urethane from the good ol’ rattle can. I used a half-dozen coats, I believe.
@@RiverbendWoodworks Thanks!

Btw, do you perform Grizzly machines demos?
Yes, I use to be the videographer and on screen fella for Grizzly! It was a great job for sure and a great company.
