Playing of this order would be admirable for a professional at his/her peak in their late sixties. There are very few who have maintained such a degree of mastery and endurance in their eighties. A phenomenal pianist.

Remarkable playing at any age, but at 84 years old - astounding.

Just the beauty of his playing the lyrical sections make this often banged and hysterically abused piece have its own stature

Seeing Shura Cherkassky perform live in Christchurch New Zealand back in the 90s changed my perception of music and piano mastery. I give full credit to this great man for the piano and piano music still being very much a part of my life today. His interpretations of many works are ones that I always return to as they truly are all about the music. He was a true virtuoso in the sense that although his technique was phenomenal, it was only used as a way of serving the music

Yes, and then delivers four delicious encores! And always with the full-toned sound and cantabile touch.

Shura was an absolute phenomenon; Nobody played like he did. His phrasing, touch, tone, technique it was all unique! Look to his fingers; it's like he is modelling the keys as clay. Read his biography: The Piano's last Czar by Elizabeth Carr (www.scarecrowpress.com) His life was sometimes very sad. He was only happy when playing the piano

Yes I have the excellent biography by his close friend and confidant Elizabeth Carr. He was lonely in his private life - see the TV interview in Holland that I uploaded.

@@piano345 Yes I know about that interview! And there are more interviews taken in Holland; One after his performance on the Grachten festival in Amsterdam in 1992, and when he went back to his native town Odessa in 1995, Just a few months before his death. These interviews are all on You Tube. He played many times in Amsterdam. After he replaced Azkenazy, he was almost every year invited by Impresario Mr. Riaskoff in his famous series of great pianists.

A great performance by a great artist that studied under Josef Hofmann. The next to last encore, Morton Goulds Boogie Woogie Etude is quite sensational.

Compared to the Hamburg, the best NY model D Steinways can often really have something special in my opinion, especially in the bass and in fortissimo where they seem to have a bigger, more snarling, less metallic sound. I don't know if this still applies in 2018.
