I'm Indian living in Poland since 10 years and I was out of loop intentionally, especially politics and all. It's surreal to see both these men sitting there in a context that I never thought, talking about things that completely eye opening to say least. It makes absolute sense. Cyrus is well-read. A person with this kind of humor cannot be anything else. In a parallel universe, I get to watch two of my favorite guys talk till eternity. William Dalrymple has no idea that I've met him and got an autographed copy of one of his books, and also that I've recommended his books to numerous people who never bothered to read.

Good insight. Thinking out of the box. I am Sri Lankan who is curious to find out the misplaced or misinterpreted history. As buddhist I was sad to hear that misconduct of monks, it is just breaking the great teaching and principles of the Buddhism. I was very interested when the discussion comes to the point Ashoka's conversation to Buddhism and hoped he would tell something near to truth. Sadly, the interviewer change the subject. How he had changed, Ashoka conquered many lands and already build his emperor when he met this Sri Lankan merchant's daughter and fall in love. She was buddhist devotee. Why Ashoka didnt cconquer Sri Lanka ? Because Sri Lankan ruled king Tissa already obeyed him. Later, Ashoka used buddhism as media to rule his kingdom. As William mentioned it was great tool. I agree with William, the monks walk along the merchants to spread the dharma was diplomatic mission of Ashoka not the duty of Buddhist monk. Installed the Ashoka inscriptions towers as a symbol of his territory. Then he build buddhist's monestry resemble the story of Buddha life in Maghada nearly after 3 centuries of Buddha's passed away. The buddhism was not discussed in history of India before Ashoka, why? Because it was not existed there.
Ashoka gets the credit of spreading the buddhism into the world but it was quite political. He contributed greatly to buddhist studies and build Nalada. These monks not really associate the normal people lived luxurious life. End of Ashoka the buddhism collapsed in India. Indian try to put the blame on muslims for declined of buddhism in Indian. But it was cholas destroyed buddhist monasteries first, not only in India also in Sri Lanka. Muslims regained their territory captured by Ashoka and destroyed the buddhist monasteries because buddhism was under Ashoka's custody was used to his political agenta. Mahayana buddhism is not pure buddhism Theravada is pure buddhism which still existed in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka was in part of world trade in the 3rd centuries and beyond. Tribes Naga considered as tamil origins lived in Sri lanka before Aryan invasion in Sri Lanka. Yakkas were tribe lived in Sri Lanka. The buddha preached them and they lived in mountains in Sri Lanka as Naga lived near to sea handle ports. There are another two tribes Rakshas and Devas. Shiva was worshipped greatly by Lankan king Ravana quite forbidden to Indian gods.
There are lots of confusion and misinterpretion of history which is carried out by so called academic people. But if some one like William come out and disclose and think logically without bias, people like to hear otherwise nobody believe these new interpretations. I am appreciate he would have done further research into southern part of India and Sri Lanka to disclose greater history twisted and buried by false.

It is incredible that we learn of our history from a while guy. Our own people don’t write about such aspects of history and if they do it is highly exaggerated nationalistic narrative lacking credibility.
I find it ironic that Scots and the Irish, who were brutally subjugated by England, who lost everything including their languages and who hated the English bitterly, helped subjugate Indians.
It is also very sad that people of Bihar, who have a brilliant history, have been reduced to the poorest state of India. For that, I entirely hold GOI responsible for its stupid policies. If north India becomes bilingual with English, it will change the fate of South Asia.

The rules of war are like - not attacking civilians, farmers, fighting away from cities in open land, not attacking soldiers who were injured(unable to fight), or those whose weapons were brokern, not raping women, etc. There could have been exceptions but rules of dharmashastra state those who force upon women as Rakshashas(demons)

There is also another reason why businessmen use to accept Buddhism & Jainism, which was to save taxes. Most of the kings of that era required the businessmen to gift animals to temples for sacrifice, because kings had power and businessmen has resources. And if it was ordered by the king they had to do it as a rule. But Buddhist & Jain businessmen used their pacifist religions to avoid this "tax". So, every other businessmen would lose their profits to these "taxes" while the Buddhist & Jain businessmen flourished.

But after some centuries under Ashoka ruler and buddhist rules of Greeks and kushans ,large number of people start becoming Buddhist

Cyrus’ ignorance is appalling sometimes here😂. Especially when hears of Yonis and Lingams in SE Asian temples, he giggles like a Victorian teenage girl without knowing what William is referring to.

Nalanda (Buddhist library) was destroyed for the last time in late 12th century (there were two earlier attack in mid 5th and mid 7th century) by Turkish Muslim invaders. The Islamic House of Wisdom in Baghdad (not as retaliation) was destroyed by followers of Buddhism and Tengriism (led by Hulagu Khan) in mid 13th century - mere 60-70 yrs apart.
These two events wiped out a lot of knowledge in the world. While Europe was going through dark ages, the libraries with written wonders of the Asian continent got destroyed.

Give examples of destroyed preislamic temples …….rama killed Ravan burnt the palace premises….such things would have happened but not annihiliation….the fact so many gods worshiped everyone eventually allowed to carryon their tradition nothing was imposed how later Islamic and Christian colonialism did to world you can compare that in that case the preislamic violence was fairly less

Most things he said were relatively unknown to me but one thing which I certainly know about that he got wrong was 1:06:02 is "Blasphemy" because he, with all the knowledge and wisdom he has, can't prove the concept of Blasphemy in Indian culture. That unfortunately made me dubious about his knowledge about Indian religious tradition. I am open to change my mind if he could give any evidence. Many Indian Kings used to give titles to themselves claiming to be Avatar of God.

Dharmic traditions and scholarship that brewed in the Gangetic Valley surely influenced the neighbouring regions. "India" has nothing to do with it.

Not a fan of Dalrymple, but he's correct about Buddhism being India's greatest export (Yoga is #1 right now, but Buddhism has connected India to the East for 2000 years).

There were financial institutions in the Vedic period, "Sreni", 1500-600 BCE. Also during the Maurya period, 321-185 BCE. These predate the Buddhist "banking" system.

Buddhism is not the greatest export of India. That’s quite offensive to say. Indias greatest export is spirituality- which includes yoga, meditation, philosophy and Buddhism among other things

Buddhism is just 1 of the many great export of India.
Prime Exports of India are Mathematics, Algebra, Trigonometry, Chemistry, Philosophy, State Craft aka Chanakya's Artha Sashtra, Yoga, Medetation, Universities, the first documented Medical Science aka Ayurveda, first book on surgery by Shushruta, Atheism too where u deny the existence of God which also became a part of Hinduism where u question the Gods & their deeds.
Basically, Hinduism is the greatest gift to the mankind & animals from India.
Sure it has many setbacks but it has course correcting mechanisms & theology unlike rabid Abrhamic Desert Political cults.
