you can directly create a solid cube underneath the part, then shift if into the part a little using dynamic move and then use the boolean function to delete the parts where both solids collide. then you can use the hole function and select the edges of the solid and you have perfect modeled drilling holes. Also you can use the divide function and just left klick and drag across lines/arcs/splines etc to delete them (they dont need to be pre-breaked into two pieces). There are some functions where you can drag across lines to accomplish things easier and faster. I hope i am not annoying, i just want to help :)
