My belief is that healthy animals yield healthy profits. A healthy animal will manage stress more efficiently, be it disease, pest, chemical or weather pressures that it is exposed to. I have always felt that I have never had any real opportunity to focus my management practices around fortifying my feed practices to help ensure my bees received a well rounded balanced diet.
Together with “that crazy beekeeper from New Brunswick”, we have focused in on all those natural characteristics that are found in nectar and developed a product which helps fortify our fed sugar syrup to that of nectar. We are still within crazy talk on that but yes if beekeepers want that, he would/could probably provide that. It’s up to him. It isn’t my objective to become a feed salesmen but like the rocket fuel, he kept getting requests so he started packing to make it available. Nothing secret about it, it’s all on his packing, moreso conveniently available. I just a brown bag user :)

Leave the bees and let them be “bees” is a skill I still haven’t fully mastered. I like you manage ment re splits and that you’ve called that for this year, you have your nucs from last year. Intrinsically sustainable!! Great to see you breathing a little too!! What a rollercoaster start that you had to “Weather” excuse the pun. . But is says it all!! Make sure you get some sunshine too!! In Ontario I walked among big beautiful dandelions for 7 1/2 klicks in bright sunshine, I did not notice a single honey bee. Watching your successes is so important to me thank you Ian.

I am only a small time bee keeper, but I put my bees on Apis Biologix control for syrup this fall. They bees look terrific. No real "data', but the hives are big ol' boxes of bees. Going with rocket fuel in pollen patties early spring to get them going.
Hi Ian, in the last comment I wrote that we also have tough conditions in Europe, but as usual, the bees surprised me pleasantly and they came to strength surprisingly quickly, and working on canola so hard. I'm glad that everything looks better and better for you and you're bees also if only there are enough supers for the honey, greetings from Poland.

Finished my EZ loader for Skid steer. Two-person operation. My wife is in Winnipeg for cancer treatment,.I ended up doing it the old way.
LOL. Up here we are taking a 60% loss and resetting on the main. Those few hives that have overcome this winter will be my breeding stock.

While I am nowhere near experienced enough to contribute to that level to other beekeepers, I hope to get there one day. I'm no scientist but I love science, especially quantum mechanics and astronomy. Hopefully I can contribute to the science part of beekeeping in some way and in turn, help the beekeeping community as you and beekeepers like you who love to teach. :)

Hi Ian. After along hard winter the bees need all the help you can give them. Make sure you only mix up as much as you can use at a time, because if it ferments it will give the bees diarreah.

North Central Oregon has certainly been trying this year, a foot of snow in the middle of cherry bloom, set bees on blooming Canola last week and grafted queens 3 days ago. Forecast for tomorrow morning is chance of snow showers...
Seems as though your hives are once again thriving
Ian what are your thoughts on Ambrosia Bee feed? I have used it off and on over the past few years but as a hobbyist it is pricey. The bees are crazy for it and the ingredients are top shelf.
It will be ok.. the old bees died before nature could give them anything. Those young bees will recover and grow fast
I'm pretty sure You will be able to pull splits, even if not before honey flow as usual. Would You be willing to try mid flow maybe? By that time the numbers will be there and queens will be limited to a single box plugged with capped brood anyway, even though capable of laying way more. Also, taking away brood at that stage wouldn't hurt much since it would only be mature enough to forage by the end of flow.
I'm probably in no position to give advice (with my few hives) on time sensitive operation of this size, but thought I'll throw it out there.

In comparison to other livestock, feed formulation for bees is about 50 years behind.
Applying the scientific methods used in animal nutrition to bees should easily yeild far better feeds than we have at the moment.
Give them time they will come to, so glad they are flying, happy for you. Is the supplement you showed available and if so what is it’s name pls.

In Alaska - pollen is coming in.I feed a fair amount of syrup in spring and find it concerning when brood nests seem to fill with syrup as queen is more limited in her ability to lay. I understand that they need to "feel" a constant supply of this resource in order to grow. What steps do you take under these circumstances? Thanks - good to see your weather and bees getting back to normal.

I'm wondering Ian how you manage strips so late? It's six weeks treatment and 2 weeks before supers on. I guess if you depend on farm crops that's late too and it works.

Digging thru colony's today nest look weird mostly young fuzzy looking bees . Lost under 5 % Oct thru March .. lost around 30% of my nucs last week of April cold nights were to much I guess. Singles are doing much better just all young bees for the most part . Glad that cold weather behind us . Those nucs I lost all had nice little brood nest going . Don't know what I could have done. Couldn't exactly take from the stronger ones .

Hey Ian, big fan from NorMan. I've been trying to get into beekeeping (and watching your videos!) for the past couple of springs, but between the international import situation, Manitoba being stuck between the two main shipping areas, and the past couple of Manitoba springs, I've had my all of my plans to get bees fall through for two years in a row.
Do you have any advice for someone in a remote Manitoba location? I'd prefer to find someone willing to ship nucs, but at this point I'm willing to pay the gas and time to do the nine hour drive (one way) myself, if you can recommend someone. With the shorter, more intense season up here, nucs with comb are pretty much essential to starting an operation. Stock health is very important to me even as a prospective hobbyist, so even the vaguest recommendation from you would give me some reassurance.
Even if you can't help, thanks a lot for all the sage advice and candid trials and triumphs. There are no other UA-camrs discussing the unique challenges of our particular climate and your experiences are an asset to the beekeeping community.

What do you do with the wax you are scraping off?
What exactly does "shaking then out" mean? On the ground? Into another hive? ??
We cut our losses, shake them out. No potential no investment of time or money. Infront of a smaller unit unless they are sick, then we shake into grass away
So, if you are not making splits this year, will you still have to put so much energy into queen rearing? Or is queen rearing worth the work for financial gains/offsets outside of your apiary? cheers!

I had a store of corn(I farm as well)I was transferring to fuel. Well at that time I had cheap corn. In alcohol making you change starch to sugars. Bees don’t care for maltose and some say it’s bad but you know how that goes.
I got the bees to take the maltose and soybean flower. Guess what. Dysentery and a drunk horse(spent grain). Theory it should have worked. But something was wrong. Corn skyrocketed and the idea went to the shelf.
I lost around 80 hives this yr. That’s my feed expertment. Still use soy meal. No more drunk horse either.

I get it that you can't understand what the frames look like right now, but I suggest you don't stop looking at them. You may not understand the pattern now, but you can record what you see and maybe understand it in retrospect. This may not be the last time all this shit happens to your apiary.
I applaud your decision to let the bees work this out for themselves for a while. We must be humble enough to realize that just because *we* don't know what to do, that doesn't mean the bees don't know what to do. They have millions of years of evolutionary knowledge stored up. More than we can learn in our short lifetimes. Hopefully somewhere in there is behaviour that gets the hive back on track after such a disaster.
as beekeepers we use predictive info to help us manage the bees, without those indicators, predicting is hard to impossible. That’s how tough of a season that it has been so far! End of our rope! We do only what we can do

That 22g packet that he provides me does 250L of syrup. I use it when I need it. I don't use it all the time. Just as I use all the rest of my supplements.

Do you feed cane or beet sugar? In Florida i use Cane Sugar.
We have access to both but beat sugar is most convenient

I never agree with sugar syrup. Is not natural or part of bees diet. Just because is sweet bees take it. But if you want to have healthy bees they need to have their own honey what they make preparations for winter. the honey for winter has different properties as the scientists say so and it’s true I feed sugar syrup twice. For few hives during 2007 and 2011 because was a very bad summer and rain during the flows and some hives not enough resource but that was for few days only until The good weather come back ....and I feel so guilty- then I always store frames with honey for feeding ,but for winter always they need to have their own honey what they produce. I also have -25 to -30 degrees Celsius in winter ....it’s a myth to say : honey is hard in winter ....bees they can chew on it. Don’t worry about it. But I see you don’t place insulation’s inside the hives and to downsize the brood chamber with less frames. I winter dadnat 12 frames hives in juts 6 -7 frames the rest on the sides are insulation they maintain good temperature inside . No sugar...... is even harmful for our body ! Trust me !

Trough autumn Always at fields with grass lands and late wild flowers , faccellia to close season in late October ....... but no sugar Ian It’s artificial made ..... as bee keepers we have to think as the bees think. In 2003 I have the trucks with bees travel in pastoral for sunflower. That was pretty much they can have for winter because all autumn was so rainy and cold I lose 34 hives that winter. But the hives I have it in the standing years they don’t get so much in sunflower flow so they harvest something else for them to have winter provisions and none of this hives from the yard die. So I think even sunflower honey is not good for wintering. I heard many saying that. You are there in a very hash climate ...and this spring you really suffer. I also suffer when I see your lost. But I hope you will overcome the situation ...you still have a lot of colonies very strong. Perhaps late in year you will have some splits. Wish you to have a good year from now on ! Good luck.
