    I have my 16 ft. Side console aluminum on a very similar trailer. If you are always bumping the middle cross member when loading……a cheap fix was to put one of those screw in trailer bumpers on it. Worked like a charm….no scrapes in the keel.

    Great job on the boat.
    The "coaming bolsters" on the gunnel looks great.

    Awesome job on your boat. I think I have decided on building the FRS14 but after seeing your 15 I am having second thoughts, lol.

      @@StealthFisha Thanks bro! The 15 gets a bit more room and freeboard. I think the 14 was designed to be a stretched FRS12. They are more flat and float in a bit less water than the 15. Either one will be a great choice though!

      @@FishingWithHoang I normally fly fish off a standup paddle board or from a kayak but I recently moved back to the Houston area and started looking for something to cover more water. The 14 seems pretty much perfect for me but your 15 is making me think.

    Great build! Thanks for posting this and other videos. I've just became aware of this boat kit company. Did you build this from their pre-cut plywood or did you just buy the plans to cut your own plywood parts? Thanks in advance!

    • @FishingWithHoang
      @FishingWithHoang  11 місяців тому +1

      Thank You! If you go onto my youtube channel, you'll see a slide show video of the whole build. I purchased the plans and cut my own plywood. The cuts did not need to be super accurate as they would be filled and glassed over. It did take around 8 hours to trace and cut all the peices.

      Thank you! I wanted a Shadowcast 16 for the longest time!!!!! Didn't have the funds st the time so I decide to build one instead. The nice thing about building this boat was the ability to learn how a boat was designed and building one with zero knowledge. It did take time but man it's worth it!

    Top notch sir. The gunnel you have look much wider than the plans. Did you customize them when building? And do you have any plans or video of how you did this? I love the wider profile it gives the skiff! Great job. I’m getting ready to start my build this fall so doing some research for ideas.

    • @FishingWithHoang
      @FishingWithHoang  11 місяців тому +1

      Thank Ya! Yes my gunnels are wider. Instead of a single shear added to the sides, I four layers instead. Gave it that wide shear line which also directs spray outwards on them white cap days. Go onto instagram and look up my account. My detailed full build is there. "hoang.nguyen82"
      Good look on your build! If you have any other questions, I might have an answer!

      @FishingWithHoang  Рік тому

      Thanks Tyler! These FRS boats are great hulls. Saltboatworks released their FRS16 plans not long ago so thats another choice. The draft on what the plans call out is 6". Just about all FRS15s that are on the water are drafting about the same.

      Thank You! Good luck on the build! I actually do not have a list. I bought mostly from online sources including ebay and amazon. Lumber was purchased locally. During the build, I would research on what I need. Then searched for the same product elsewhere online to see if I could find a better deal. Did that until I completed the boat a little at a time. Ex. Epoxy and fumed silica.. While cutting out the plywood and stitching, I searched for epoxy brands and fumed silica for a seller or dealer as close as possible for quicker delivery and cost. Ended up costing less where I got my stuff on ebay. Same goes with everything. In details of where I bought everything, I dont have that info anymore since I built the boat 2 years ago.

      @@FishingWithHoang much appreciated on getting back to me. I’m sure I’ll be watching your videos over and over during the process. I ordered the fiberglass and resin a while back. Need to make sure it’s enough and correct. Hopefully HD or Lowes will have the wood. Im looking forward to the process for sure. Im up near Texoma, my goal is to have the boat ready for next spring and go to the Gulf for some fly fishing 👍

      @@jasonkeith674 Have a few guys here in central Texas and hill country looking for marine plywood. There is a lumbar yard here in North Austin who has them and these guys drove to that store to pick up their plywood. Another guy from Oklahoma couldn't find any at all since he's way up there. He ended up ordering the plywood as a decent price plus shipping. I'm not sure if the Dallas area has any. If you need help with finding marine plywood, lemme know and I'll try to find some sources! As far as lumbar for floor supports, sheer bumpers and etc, I bought mine at Home Depot. I used 1x2 Cedar. Was not part of the plans but it was easier to purchase than to get what was needed and required by the plans. It had to be a certain size and no one had it precut. It needed to be custom cut. So with that being said, you can do some modifications but still have the same outcome.

      @@FishingWithHoang man that’s great info and a bid help for sure. I’ll be doing some searching this week of my options. I salvaged some cedar boards not too long ago. I wonder if any of that would be usable? I really need to sit and lay everything out, do inventory, put a plan together. I want to make sure that when I start I’ll have everything needed or at least a parts list of needs and haves. I appreciate you reaching out. 🙏🙏
      I’m sure once I get going on this, I’ll be messaging you plenty LOL.

    • @FishingWithHoang
      @FishingWithHoang  Рік тому +1

      No I dont park it on the rocks at all. This was actually the first time. There was no other area at this freshwater lake that is this shallow for me to park and privately talk to the camera. I've ran into sandbars left and right in the flats. This boat has beached on sand more than anything and I live 4 hours away from saltwater. 😁 There is no wear on the bottom of the hull. No scratches, etc. Just some bunk scuff marks from parking the boat back onto the trailer on them crazy cross wind days.

    What was your technique for your lids and the lip system for drainage? Would you next time add transom pods for more flotation and beef up the transom and the transom support to take a 40?

    • @FishingWithHoang
      @FishingWithHoang  2 роки тому +1

      Do you have facebook? If you do, hop over to "Salt Boatworks Builders" group. Join and search for "hatch". There is a discussion about it and some detailed photos from a few of us builders.

    • @FishingWithHoang
      @FishingWithHoang  2 роки тому +1

      I thought about transom pods. Still thinkong about adding it in the future to see if it'll float the hull in even skinnier waters but not sure if it will work with the trim tabs and all that I have attached to the transom. The FRS15 is rated for 30hp. It gets pretty hairy at full throttle depending on conditions. At 28-29mph solo with light gear, its pretty nimble.
