Twenty years ago, when I was 40, I moved to Seattle from Michigan. I had lived in Michigan my entire life, and I would have said I didn't have an accent. Then, I began working in a Fisheries Library at the University of Washington. It wasn't long after I started my job before I heard this: "You have a Great Lakes Accent. Are you from Michigan or Wisconsin?" I answered Michigan, but after the grad student left, I asked my co-workers if I had an accent. They just started laughing. Luckily, the University of Washington had a Linguistic Department, so I began looking for talks about accents. At the first lecture, I learned I had a Northern City Vowel Shift with a Glottal Stop accent. The researcher also said that, for some reason, people with this accent don't know they have an accent. She had that right. Keep making your videos; they are a lot of fun.
THE BRITISH THING! 5:21 , Dear God I've never subscribed faster. Bro...when I tell you I moved to NC for uni and I kept getting the same thing and I was BAFFLED! PERPLEXED to say the least. I grew up in Michigan and yeah explored and traveled but never liked long-term in one place outside of MI and I had no clue what they were hearing. TBH I didn't even really know or notice my own accent til I moved south and had to repeat myself every other sentence. I've been doing research and I'm starting to piece this all together, that and this whole "northern city vowel switch" I swear I must've been speaking a foreign language and French has been no help here LOL! (I reside in FL now and everyone is on Spanish) anyway thx. Even listening to you talk I don't really hear our accent which still goes to show how immersed I truly was it's insane you just sound normal bro! ong!
Same here. I moved to Texas about 10 years ago. At first a lot of people asked where I was from, or what did I just say? I had one co-worker ask if I was from "new york or somewhere".
I’ve also heard that Michiganders talk nasally compared to the rest of the states. Recorded myself and listened to it and they’re not lying to be honest. Hope it’s not just a me thing😂
I travel the Midwest down to Texas and the South a little for work. We talk nasally and fast. Don’t sweat it. It could be a Detroit area thing, but I’m also told we’re kinda loud too. We’re generally funny though so they’re ok if we’re loud.
The Michigan accent is just a 30 year old Irish dude who moved to michigan when he was 10 years old. I have to slow down all the time when I'm talking to people that aren't from the midwest 😂
Nice! You called me out on so many things that I've never noticed about us as Michiganganders before & I love it! I love my speech and dialect but have been teased about it throughout my life. I'm currently a resident of South Carolina & now I'm a refered to as a Yankee! 😂
i'm from michigan and i have a question!! do you also pronounce clothes like "close"? it's genuinely hard for me to say clothes like how it's spelled and idk if that's a michigan accent thing or just a me thing, lol
Trying to figure this out... my mom is from St. Louis and my dad is from Chicago Illinois. I found out that I say more of these words than they do. Which part are you from? I heard people from yooper (U.P.) sound more like from Minnesota. You and I sound similar but I am from Tampa Florida.
I've lived in Grand Rapids for nearly 40yrs and never heard "jeet" or whatever it is, ever in my life. Is that more of a up tip of the mitten or east side kind of thing?
I grew up in Michigan and I say the word “sherbet” Shur-Bert (adding an extra R where there isn’t one!). Anyone else say it this way?
didn't realize this but have to do a video on it
Really excited about the video!
I do!!! It's my favorite cold treat.
I do
Yes!
I just found your videos. And it's blowing my mind all the words I never realized I pronounced differently.
I remember when I discovered it too!

I’m from Pontiac (Pun ne yak) Michigan. Can anyone relate to calling athletic shoes tenny shoes?
I very much can on the shoes and never saying "t" in Pontiac haha
@@RyanRedoute So glad I’m not the only one 😂 Love your content!
Fenton Mi, is pronounced Fet In Lol
Grosse Pointe Woods (Gross Point Woods). I can definitely relate to calling them that (ignore my previous comment)
Yes!

Oh, the Yankee when I’m down south and then I’m a Troll in my home state. Just can’t win lol

Yes! very "cloze"
@@RyanRedoute lol, my michigan accent is stronger than i thought 😅
@@RyanRedouteYES😃
I say it like that too 😂
Close, but I say “clothing” correctly. “Florda” vs “Flor-I-Da” in the East is a test. We contract when we can.
I never knew really had a accent until someone called it out
Same with me! Sparked all these videos.
Have you ever visited The Marquette Michigan or Houghton (Houghon) we do have a accent called Yooper looking up eh

"Pr'y." Ex: "You cnprygdawayw'tht." (You can probably get away with it.)
I find myself saying probuh’ly or prob’ly!
I’ve never been in a Hurricane but have experienced Hurricane Gail force wind in the upper peninsula Michigan up by Lake superior!
Heck’s yeah, every august we get pummeled with storms along the I-94 corridor!
August is crazy for that reason in Michigan
I never realized we had an accent 😂
I think alot of us have a lisp some what, as u do! Lol
I texted you on Ig one time and we talked about how Michiganders pronounce "understand"😂😂
we are wild haha
Haha I got asked recently are you Canadian? Lol heck no 😂
My all time favorite is guessing I’m from New York…
Nopeee GR Michigan 😂
The Michigan accent actually had New York accent influences in it! So makes sense.
I've lived in Grand Rapids for nearly 40yrs and never heard "jeet" or whatever it is, ever in my life. Is that more of a up tip of the mitten or east side kind of thing?
From Southwest Michigan and I definitely say it lol
What they said haha
My mom has the worst accent. She says melk, layg for leg and don't get ne started about nuclear.
Nucleur! haha
