This video proves that you don't need flashing lights, glittering studios and zippy transitions to hold people's attention if the guest and interviewer are engaging to watch. Television could learn from this.
While this is certainly true, it's incredibly hard (if not impossible) to have every single guest on a talk show be engaging. That's why they focus so much on who will host a talk show--they need to be able to carry the show through a boring or nervous guest. With 2 or 3 guests for every show, most shows filming 5 days a week... they can't all be winners.
Eufracina Same here. I didn't know if I was going to watch the whole thing until I starting watching it and then suddenly the end had come so quickly. I was literally wrapped in the conversation. Such an important topic.
Also though, this does look like they have professional lighting (maybe not Hollywood style) and it looks like they were able to have a location where this look was possible. I'm not saying that what you are saying isn't true, I agree tv and movies have these BIG budgets that a simple layout would be soo much better, but this isn't just a everyone has the equipment or money to spend on equipment (lights, editing software and such) to make videos like this.
That was very brave of you Carrie. And I'm really happy you did this video with Ben. It is certainly an issue that needed addressing and I watched Sprinkleofglitter's video and you both did it so wonderfully. It is really hard especially as your viewers can't really relate as they don't have hundreds of thousands of followers/subscribers/fans and you therefore can be taken in a different way but I understood, from what I can understand many others did and you really got what you wanted across and got us to walk in your shoes. :) have a great day
This interview was brutally honest and exceptionally interesting. It's nice to see the other side of Carrie and it's impressive that she was brave enough to show this aspect of herself on such a public forum. Well done.
Great video, nice to see you talk openly about your place in the youtube bubble. It seems your need to be liked/a people pleaser causes you a lot of anxiety. Lovely to see that you've already realised its an issue. Like all of us you are a work in progress. I'm always here if you need me x
I'd love to see Ben doing more of these interviews with other UA-camrs just being themselves. Sometimes I think a lot of UA-camrs have a veneer over their personalities due to the content they make, and I think just seeing them in this kind of format would make them seem a lot more human.
whoa i wish all youtubers would have videos like this, it might break down the barriers you mentioned at the beginning of this video. This was good, I enjoyed it, made me understand more about who you are, and your feelings and this whole youtube thing from your point of view. Loved it xox
Wonderful video. I don't understand why people can be hating so much on your videos. Honestly, I feel you are one of the most caring and honest UA-camrs out there. It doesn't feel like you are acting on camera or just doing something just to get views. It feels like you are talking directly to me, and that's good because it creates a stronger connection between the viewer and creator. Don't worry so much about those few hate comments, Carrie. There's always going to be haters no matter what the video is about. Just keep being you and making great videos :)
that's very true i sat here for the full 25 minutes sucked into the computer. But now i just feel really sad because i just wish that people wouldn't be so mean to her.
Great video! Yeah, I think Carrie has a way of drawing people in when she speaks. Even unscripted, she has such a way of captivating people with her words. But yeah, I also wish people wouldn't be so mean to her. She shouldn't be treated so badly just for sharing her opinion or just trying to talk about what she thinks is right. She may not be perfect, she is human after all, but she's still a very good and genuine person. I think she's a whole lot better than most of us. Sometimes she slips up, and everyone shouldn't blow up at her for it. She should be able to talk about what she truly thinks without people reading too much into exactly how she words it, especially when it's unscripted and she doesn't really have time to figure out how to answer without offending anyone. People should still be able to understand what she's getting at. If someone has a gigantic problem with something she's says, don't cause a sh**storm in the comments, send her a letter explaining that something offended you, and why it did. That way, she can learn from it, and communicate better, without her just closing herself off because people are so mean when she opens up.
Sometimes I feel that there is an implication that I should stop watching your videos as a 22 year old who has lived away from her parents for 5 years. Given comments from others of a similar age (and often older) that I regularly see, it would be nice for us to be acknowledged more. A larger proportion of younger viewers (but obviously not all of them) tend to idolise. For me, I don't look up to you as a big sister or mentor, I don't expect you to be happy 24/7, or in any way be "beyond-human". I am curious about your career, which is vastly different from that I've chosen, but really I just respect your values, the ones which are shared anyway! Gathering that you want less of this creator-viewer division, it might be helpful to connect more with the old cronies in your audience a little more. There's plenty of us here.
I agree. I don't think it's a deliberate decision any UA-camr makes though. I just think the younger viewers tend to be the most vocal with their opinions and have more of an affect on the content. But what do I know I'm an old one too :P
This comment also interests me as i am one of the "younger viewers" yet i agree with everything you've said. Carrie may be a youtuber but far above that she is a person and she has to deal with all the same things as we do, sadness, happiness, anger. She has her own views as does everyone else and even the ones that she has not shared i respect as really its non of my business to judge. I'm curious about her career also and it annoys me when people say they idolise these people who they don't even nearly know everything about.I think if she is wanting to banish the division between creators and viewers all of us "younger viewers" should not all be seen in the same light as there is plenty of us who see creators as normal people.
Im sooooo happy that there are older viewers! As a 23 year old I dont consider her either as a big sister or a mentor. But its nice to know that there are, makes me feel less childish i guess :P
Yes, absolutely. I wasn't intending to suggest that all younger viewers are like that, by any means. In fact, everyone sits on a spectrum in terms of how they relate to UA-camrs. Anyway I was quite clumsy in the way I said it...
Oh no i'm sorry, i didn't take your comment like that! Sorry if i came across like that. I was just letting you know that i agreed with you, i just went that long way round about saying it :).
The reason why you're seen as a big sister is because of how intelligent and honest you are, people have attached to you because it's kinda comforting to watch your videos. Not to forget the fact you're talented, your voice is amazing, I've played you to some of my students here in Taiwan and they love it! :D
This video made ME feel like a proud big sister. I love seeing people open up about who they are, and it is so incredibly difficult to talk about things that you have learned from past experience to bottle up. I can honestly feel the liberation from this video for you, and I hope it feels as freeing to you as it came across to me!
This was so wonderful to watch! I feel like you both addressed a lot of issues that many youtubers feel, that should be talked about more, and I'm noticing more and more people are doing precisely that recently, which is wonderful to see. Really lovely video.
Carrie, this video I have watched like five times because I pick up different things every time I watch it. But when you say you are pretty sure you are bipolar my heart just drops because I feel so sorry for you. Because you have gone through a lot in your life both good and bad (guessing but not totally sure) and not only have you got your own personal problems but you also have the people who write you letters, and they say really deep stuff and it sort of adds to it (again guessing). Carrie, your audience is supportive and people who are knit picky are not the audience you deserve, I love your videos carrie I think you are amazing, stay strong sweet heart, I'm sorry for what you have to go through, if you need to retract from UA-cam then do it because it's your channel, Ben did it for nearly a year :) love you carrie I hope everything gets better lovely :)
Carrie, role models and big sisters, as you say, are not meant to be perfect. I personally do not want to look up to someone who always seems perfect because I know I will never be there. You are amazing and we love you. I am glad that you are happy in your videos because it makes you happy, but I still love videos like this where you are not worried to show everything you are feeling at the time.
I think Ben should do this with a lot of UA-camrs cus half of them are so put on (not Carrie at all!!!) but some of them have such a front I don't even know who half of them are anymore 0.o would be really interesting to see what half of them are really like...
'Ben should do this with a lot of UA-camrs cus half of them are so put on' / 'I don't even know who half of them are ' isn't this one of the points that was explored in this video is the culture of viewers demanding and thinking its their 'right' to know just as you're showing by this comment. This is actually the problem, first of all you dont actually know them to begin with so how can you 'not know anymore' I find it a bit ridiculous. Its the content creators choice what they put and what viewers receive even if someone wasn't a true reflection of what they are 24/7 in videos its their right and choice to decide what gets shown and it doesnt make them anymore 'fake' than someone who shares everything with everyone and it definitely shouldn't be viewers right to demand that from them, why does it matter so much to you and to others? I dont get this culture
XanetBZ hmm yeh I do agree with you, sorry didn't mean to offend :/ I didn't exactly mean it like that, I have no problem with youtubers choosing how they want to appear in videos and I totally understand their privacy, and its completely their choice! However many of them have changed a lot because things are different now, they're practically celebrities and filming is their job. It is very "camera on" "smile on" "camera voice on" whereas in the past it was more natural? Don't get me wrong again, this is totally fine, its their choice and this is how they want to appear, of course they want to portray the best side of themselves, its human. But because there has been such a drastic change its just hard not to notice, and their mindsets have changed because now they're trying to please an entire audience, rather than just themselves. I know I don't know any of them personally, but I know enough to be aware that they cannot really be as perfect as they appear and that their approach to "youtubing" has changed, that is all :) Again, I don't mean to offend.. sorry for the essay ^ that's just what I think
If you're ever at a gathering, and you have a choice of meeting anyone, always go to meet Ben Cook. Because he is genuinely such a nice guy, who's really intelligent, and really worldly, and will speak to you as an equal and a friend, not just "another fan" as such. you could have such an intelligent and easy conversation with him it's brilliant. Twice I've met Ben, and both times he was genuinely great person.
Gosh, it's so weird that I cried half-way on, as well. Especially because I just lost my grandmother and have a whole lot of family drama at home. But has any of that warranted a tear from me? NOPE. But it's the fact that someone is getting abused or bullied, when you clearly see them trying to do their best in life, that just sent me over the edge. I dunno... :(
Carrie, I just wanted to thank you for being my big sister for the last years. Although we are the same age, haha. I have struggled a bit, or a lot, and you always make me happy with your smile and your advice, which I have sometimes really needed. I can only imagine what great impact you have on younger boys and girls, when you have been able to give such comfort to me, a twenty-one-year old. You are one of the main inspirations to the fact that I just started making videos, and after doing that for a few weeks I came back to watch this video to remember the things you said, and to let you know something; You are the only UA-camr I watch that feels like you're "one of us", if you understand what I mean. That barrier you're talking about, I don't get that with you. You're just a friend, and if we ever met I'd like to buy you a coffee and chat for a few minutes much rather than to get your autograph. I feel like you have managed to keep your feet on the ground, and on the same ground as your viewers. Just felt that needed to be said. From a small UA-camr to a big one: We are the same, and thanks for taking the time to remind me of that every once in a while. Xx
I've worried about you over the last few months. Reading everything people have been saying has made me want to go to the stage door just to give you a hug to show you that someone is thinking of you, not wanting you to fix their problems. I watch you because I relate to you on the same level, I have opinions that people don't like and of course you have too and that's the Carrie I love to watch. I met you and we chatted about War of the Worlds and I was a mess because I too have a problem with needing to be liked and have battled with depression and worries of Bipolar (though I now think it was just a critical form of depression that I'm trying to manage) I really hope that this calms people down a bit and helps them understand we all go through the same shit as everyone else. You are always the best version of yourself, even on bad days, because the best people can admit that it's a bad day and do their best to deal with it. Sending love and hugs your way. :) xx
you're lovely carrie don't let those people get you down you only need to care about the opinions of people who understand you and support you just the way you are :)
Disguised as a video that reveals Carrie H. Fletcher as a person rather than a persona, this video is actually an insidious and successful plot to trick Ben Cook into dropping his Slytherin mask and reveal his inner Hufflepuff. Actually, it does both.
This is so important on so many levels... from speaking about the divide between fans and 'UA-camrs' to talking out about bipolar and mental health problems, this is just so important. I'm so glad you made this, and I'm so grateful. You are so brave to do this, Carrie. I just want to give you a hug now, even more than before! Just try and make sure you're better, Carrie. Look after yourself first and foremost, and THEN focus on everything else. Your happiness, your health and what you want to do is more important than so called fans who can't have empathy for you for whatever reason. I understand this won't help, but you don't need to feel this pressure. To me, I just appreciate all you do and would be excited for anything - I don't EXPECT anything from you! I think that you also need to try and remember that those people sending the deep, personal letters don't expect anything from you - all they're looking for is a big sister figure to spill their story too. They understand that you cannot possibly help them, and if they don't, then unfortunately that is something that needs to be learned (I've had to learn that you have to be 'your own hero', and I had to learn it the hard way, so I understand!). Sorry for all the ramble, I just???I love you for who you are and what you want to do / feel is right, Carrie. You've supported your fans incredibly...now, perhaps, it's our time to step up to the plate and support you the way you deserve.
It was nice to see a more frank side to you, Carrie. :) I can appreciate what you want to do with representing your best self on your videos, especially after reading the heartfelt letters from young people who look to you to be uplifted. Sadly, there comes along an element of schadenfreude, when others see this "perfect" image of you and then they delight or leap upon moments when you trip up. I agree with Ben, if you were rude one in a while or demonstrably didn't care what people thought, people would get bored of trying to tear you down. But in a lot of ways it takes more courage to admit you care and want to be an uplifting presence. We're all so ironic these days people don't know what to do with sweetness or sincerity half the time.
This is really amazing. I love how all these videos addressing UA-cam culture are coming out recently. These divides have just become wider and wider with this whole fandom culture coming about and UA-cam condoning it through creating barriers on the website and literal barriers at UA-cam Conventions. Also I think UA-camrs themselves tend to condone it a bit by immediately assuming all their viewers are '12 year olds.' In that state of mind, thinking your viewers are younger and therefore inferior to you, no progress is going to be made in breaking the barriers. The UA-camrs' part is only small though in the wider context of this whole ordeal.
it also alienates the viewers who ARE 12, 13, 14, etc. we aren't ALL super fangirl-y, and we get enough of people thinking "oh she's 14 she shouldn't be taken seriously" irl by our parents and other adults. i mean I will admit that since I'm 14 I'm probably pretty stupid sometimes but that doesn't mean it's okay to treat us like that all the time.
Great video, very honest :). A point that I did think of though is, often I do feel patronised by (some) youtubers. In videos it comes across that a lot of youtubers consider their audience to all be the screaming, fanatic fangirls who go crazy at gatherings etc'. I'm not saying youtubers aren't aware of older audiences, but I often feel like I'm being addressed as a 13 year old sometimes - not saying all 13 year olds fall into this stereotype, but still.
Agreed--I think the fanatic fans are just more noticeable. Anyone who is willing to go all the way to some sort of even (say, Playlist Live) is going to be obsessed to some degree. The people the UA-camrs meet are not representative of the entire UA-cam community.
Agreed! It is a little bit of a pet peeve when UA-camrs don't outwardly recognise older viewers while they address young teens, but it doesn't mean they don't know we are here :) Older viewers, I think, maybe better understand where UA-camrs are coming from when they have to explain and justify certain things. Like the things discussed in this video!
+Amara Bennington I agree. I'm 26 & I just enjoy the content some youtubers make. I'm not sure UA-cam conventions where fans who idolise these people are made to stand in line for hours to meet creators for two minutes is the way it should still be done. They should just have conventions for creators so it becomes a convention for sharing ideas again instead of some celebrity platform. Can't be much fun for those paying loads & queuing for hours either.
I loved how you put this and how you explained the honorary big sister/ why you chose that term. And just loved it overall. No matter how old you get you are always going to try to be better and that means changing. So it doesn't mean if you are the most important in the world, a youtuber, or a viewer; you will change. More people just need to grasp that.
Damn... i cried... i see Carrie as an amazing positive and smart person. I look up to her a lot. The fact that there are people who think that she's bad or passive- aggressive or whatever really confuses me.
This is hands down my favourite video you've done. I'm 25 so I haven't looked at you in the big sister sense, but I can't imagine on such a large scale you to get that feedback and be in a position of "role model" like that's in the best way so scary. However, my point again is I loved this video and I respect how candid and raw this was
I've never understood why people idolise youtubers. I mean I watch youtubers as much as the next person but part of the appeal is that you're all just normal people with flaws and the way a lot of people approach youtube these days completely goes against its original appeal which is upsetting as UA-cam really is losing its usp
I think it's because UA-cam, in a sense, has evolved since that time, which has been great, really. But with a new feel, comes different dynamics. You and me both can look at other youtubers as people who make mistakes cause they're just as human as you and me. The problem here, I think, is that some people, maybe a little less experienced with the real world and life in general, forget they aren't watching a tv show or a webseries--I mean, obviously youtubers put themselves out there, it's their doing. Or they continue to do it, cause a lot of them fell into it XD What I mean is that UA-cam is a place where you can show YOU, it's not like television. Actors and actresses pretty much need to be perfect all the time, and that's really crappy when you're young, while you're still trying to figure it all out and learn to deal with it properly, and respectively. UA-cam shouldn't be like that, but we've gotten used to seeing these people with weekly schedules, and people who are inspired to make the videos we watch. I think people need to learn to differentiate between Television and UA-cam, especially because there ARE directors on UA-cam, serious people like Thefinebros, Wong Fu Productions, Pineappleboyfilms, etc, that WANT to bring you amazing production-quality stuff. Carrie, like a lot of youtubers are just... vloggers that tube their way. I think it'll be a while until that day comes, when people can look at UA-cam properly. UA-cam is still, in its own right, a baby. People don't really know how to react to it cause UA-cam has yet to fully form, but people also need to learn how to perceive it once that basic format IS here. That's just my thoughts on it anyway lol.
because theyre usually generally very nice and talented people. why would you not idolise them? better than idolising some movie star. a lot of people in real life suck. if youre in a pretty sucky place surrounded by sucky people, then youre going to idolise a shred of kindness you find online. also, youtubers are fairly open and its like having an online best friend.
spring rolls I'm not saying that they aren't talented and nice people, I love watching youtube. I'm just saying the whole point of youutbe is that these are real people and everyone should accept that and allow youtubers to have flaws and not put pressure on them ot be 'idols' and perfect.
Alice O'Keeffe no, you shouldnt pressure them, but people idolise them because theyre normal. theyre perfectly achievably nice and genuine people who arent afraid to be themselves.
Alice O'Keeffe Yeah I agree with both you and with spring rolls last comment that people idolise UA-camrs because they are normal. For me UA-camrs such as Carrie & Sprinkleofglitter are my idols because they are real. I love when UA-camrs open up to you and aren't afraid to share their opinions. They aren't afraid to share parts of their lives that are either good or bad (for example how they feel like Carrie in this video), because it does make them human just like us. I do understand that sometimes they want to keep some things private, and people do have flaws. People watching just have to realise this and accept it & try not to put pressure on UA-camrs to be perfect. Does this make sense? =) If it doesn't let me know and I'll try and explain it better =)
I’ve recently watched both Louise’s (SprinkleOfGlitter) And Carrie Fletcher’s video where they speak about how over whelming people people finding them “inspirations”. They spoke about how they are not perfect and people only see the videos, not them in their ordinary life, and they’re not inspiring that they normal, that they shouldn’t be inspiring. I don’t think that they realize that they are. I know that they arn’t perfect, i know they’re not always how they act on camera, I realise all that. For me they’re style icons and such inspirations, they’ve let us see delicate parts of their lives, and they both come across confident and they act like who they are, and dress who they are and they look fabulous! I know they have flaws, i know they’re human, i know i don’t know 90% of them, but im ok with that and they are still inspirations and they will make mistakes but that’s human nature, if they didn’t they wouldn’t be an inspiration to me. Im rambling but they are beautiful and inspiring, flaws included
Oh Carrie...I just wanna hug you and be your big sister instead. I think its very admirable and brave what you're doing in this video. Engaging in conversation like this. I admire you alot ,being so mature and honest about it. I wish you luck with your possible bipolar diagnosis, and Im sending you loads of spiritual teamugs filled with love ♥
Its so refreshing to watch somebody speak the words they actually live. I've seen you many times at events Carrie - and not once have you come over as condescending and "above" anyone else, you will often break that barrier between where "the star" should be and where the "fan" should be. The words you have spoken in this video about eradicating the gap between "fan" and "star" are shown through your own actions. I hope you realise people do notice this, and appreciate this.
Thankyou for sharing this with us Carrie xx I think something as honest and unscripted as this is what the community really needs right now :) To be reminded that we are all just people and that no person is perfect, no matter how hard we try x
It's funny cuz a few people are saying they like seeing "this side" of carrie, but she doesn't seem that different in this to me. She's just talking about different stuff in this than in other videos. Really amazing video though :) This was a really cool interview.
Only 8 minutes in but loving this video, thank you for being as open as you are and it's 100% your choice how much you put out there for us to see. At the end of the day, we are strangers on the Internet and it's your choice to show how happy or unhappy you are at any time
I really appreciate the fact that Carrie makes the conscious choice to always be positive on screen. Obviously I realise that she's not always happy, but it means that when I'm sad I've got this place I can turn to which is guaranteed to have a happy, positive, uplifting atmosphere and watching a few of her videos can really turn my day around. I'm honestly so proud of Carrie and I do see her as an honorary big sister, I really hope she carries on with youtube for as long as it makes her happy.
This is you, and this is what I love. Do what makes you happy, you don't owe us anything just because we give you a certain number of views. I love you lots, you are an amazing person Xx
I think it was very brave of you to put this video up and I admire you for it. People are mean and they think they control your paycheck when in fact you do have another job. You are the content creator, not us. I love all of your content so far, I relate to it. We as the audience do not have the power to tell you what you should and shouldn't upload and what your opinions on things should be. If people don't like your videos then they need to unsubscribe. It's a simple process that involves clicking once, but people seem to think it's easier to just hate on not only you but all youtubers and make them feel like horrible people, when in fact they're the insecure ones who obviously have to make their hatred known. I am a recent Hopeful, I saw you first with Dan and Phil and then had a little fall out with youtube and I found you again and I couldn't be happier. I have your book and I read it when I'm down, I haven't even finished the book yet because I just keep rereading chapters because they're so good. You should be very proud and happy with the life your leading. You have a job that you love, online and off, you obviously have amazing friends, your book and writing style are amazing, and you're an all around wonderful person
The barrier between UA-camrs has become a lot higher in recent years. UA-cam used to be a place where loads of people made videos and helped each other out and all acted as one big family. Now, it's stupidly hard for us small UA-camrs (e.g me with 340 subscribers) to gain an audience because people seem to only subscribe to people with loads of subscribers already. I really wish something would change there.
brilliant video. as part of your younger audience (i'm 16), i still think it's such a shame that so many people forget that youtubers like you are still people at the end of the day, with their own flaws and their own problems. watching creative content on youtube doesn't entitle you to know every detail about the creator's life, no matter how open about it he or she is, like you tend to be.
It literally embarrasses me that there are hoards of screaming fangirls following people at conventions. It's awful! I only hope UA-camrs can remember that there are some people who aren't like this. I would love to just have an intelligent conversation with the people I watch :)
I saw some UA-camrs walk into a room full of viewers in a Funforlouis video recently. Instead of screaming they gave them a round of applause. Such a respite!
I can't even express how much I love this video. Carrie, from what you share with us and from what we know of you, you are *such* an amazing human being. The fact that you even wanted to put this video out there, to show your fully unprepared, unscripted self, is a feat on its own. Not many people would do that. I (and I think I speak for the other Hopefuls here) completely understand that you are a complex person, and that you *do* have your flaws, and that we don't know even *half* of who you are as a whole, but we will support you based on what we DO know. Don't ever let anyone pressure you into revealing something you don't want to reveal; you DO NOT OWE US ANYTHING. What you choose to keep to yourself is entirely your decision, and we respect that. A friend from Malaysia, Shalina xxx
so sorry you're feeling a bit rubbish just remember we are here for you like you are there for us and don't put any pressure on yourself because its not worth it xx
You don't owe us anything and I love the "natural" you and this video was absolutely amazing :) I think you're great even if you have maybe slipped up once or twice !
I agree so much. I remember once I watched Michelle Phan's Draw my Life video and she said at some point that her father or stepfather did some horrrible things which made him and her mother split and she didn't want to talk about them but literally 75% were asking what he did. I litrally just went on a rage and said "SHE DOESN'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT, SHE SAID SO IN THE VIDEO, ALL THESE COMMENTS ARE PROBABLY REALLY DISTRESSING TO HER SO SHUT UP!"
To be honest I stumbled across a video of yours in my youtube travels, and I am so glad I did. I don't idolise you or think your better than me or anything like that, but I do think you're a wonderful human with one of the biggest hearts I have ever seen and if you don't want to share something, don't. Just because the pillocks are louder it doesn't mean there are more of them. There are so many people who would respect your decision to not share private thoughts and you being happy in your videos brightens my day as Im sure it does yours xxxx Keep plodding along Carrie, I think deep down you know its worth it x
Carrie, I really admire you for doing this video. Not as an idol figure or youtuber, but as a human being. You are so, so multi-dimensional and so real and it must be hard being in a position that makes it easy to be misunderstood. Thank you for placing yourself in a place of vulnerability for 25 minutes to show the world what being a human being who happens to be on the internet looks like. I'm proud to watch your videos, but i'm more proud that i'm watching someone who is becoming more confident in being fully herself in every since of the word. Thank you. Love, just another human being who respects you for you.
I like Ben's black shirt. It's almost the exact same colour as the background. It makes it seem like Ben's body underneath his jacket and neck has just disappeared!
My thoughts on this video. 1) I think all big youtubers should do interviews like this. It's great to see Carrie so honest. I'm favoriting this video. 2) Every time they mention Slytherin and Gryffendor, I kept thinking of the "Wizard Love" song by Tessa Violet. 3) Carrie has the best hair since Brian May of Queen and I'm extremely jealous.
Carrie you said you didn't think you've done enough to be treated the way you are, but to be honest making thousands of people smile and laugh and feel good about themselves is amazing. You have all this power and a voice that can be heard and you use it in such a caring way that makes people from all over the world feel special. You deserve to be treated like royalty, because you've treated all us hopefuls like your little princesses and princes xxx
I once met you in the tube and was surprised to see how easy it was to talk to you. That also made me realise that there's no difference between the viewers and the content creators :)
I think Ben is such a brilliant video maker in a way that he always gets the message or idea across correctly and clearly. I think who Carrie is really shone through in this video, which was the exact intention her and Ben had. I really loved this.
Carrie, can I just say about the 401 show (I know you want to put it to bed but bear with me) that I have been in several abusive relationships before and it was only when my friends taught me to respect myself and have the confidence to walk away without the fear of being alone that I learnt how to filter out the people who are bad for me and I became truly happy, so I wish that your comments had reached my ears during that difficult period when I couldn't open up to my friends about what was going on. You probably helped more people with that video than you offended, but people are quicker to show anger than to show gratitude. So I just want to thank you, for always trying to help and make the world a better place, which is something that so few of us still try to do x
1) Great video, everyone should do something like this 2) I hope you are ok after all the 4:01 show stuff. When people started saying that stuff I was just like WHAT THE HELL THAT WAS CLEARLY NOT WHAT SHE WAS TRYING TO SAY 3) Even though your bipolar isn't officially diagnosed yet it's brave of you to come out and talk about stuff like this. We should all be having this mental health discussion. 4) I hope everything else in life is going well
I second all of this! Especially about the 4:01 stuff. I felt like everyone just jumped on the bandwagon of hate, clearly having no idea about what was actually said, or being so colossally stupid that they were unable to understand the positive message that Carrie was clearly sending out. I hate when people isolate one little word or phrase and ignore everything else.
Vagary I've watched it and I can't really see where people are coming from with the hate? Idk if that's just what comes from knowing her as a person and knowing where she's coming from :)
Carrie, I continue to watch your videos because you are one of the most human youtubers out there. There is a danger that viewers will, in some ways, live vicariously through youtubers, feel jealous of or aim towards having their (apparently) perfect lives. So I think you do something incredibly important by allowing viewers to see your imperfections and for having the confidence and integrity to do so, I respect you.
this made me feel...a lot more grounded, in a way? i actually really liked this. you're cool, carrie, and i really, really appreciate your honesty (to the amazing extent you've shared your life with us). yay. have a nice day.
Carrie's not Perfect. We as her audience are not perfect. But I do feel that she generally is a wonderful person. I feel that she's genuine. Love you, Carrie!
I had never heard of the 4:01 show so I had to look it up to see this relationship episode. After reading the comments, I became unsure I had even viewed the same video. Carrie, you are a beautiful person and I'm sorry that you are so deeply affected by these issues.
this was wonderful. i'm really enjoying the discussion that's going on about the fan and youtuber relationship. thank you for opening up, and sharing this with us. it really made me think about all this.
Interesting, if very Carrie-centric. I'm not sure how much this video actually achieves except delving into the world of Carrie in a partly narcissistic, partly admirable way. I think a lot of people respect you, Carrie, for making an effort to bring such a positive energy, but it's very comforting to know that you have your ups and downs like the rest of us.
I loved this video so much. It was great to listen to such a raw conversation between Ben and yourself. I know UA-cam culture is becoming extremely uncomfortable and to be honest, it's difficult to stay positive and think "We can change this. We can stop viewers from constantly putting UA-camrs on pedestals," but hopefully things will get better. Thank you, and Ben as well, for sharing this conversation with us.
Carrie I don't presume to know you or even the world of youtube, but I feel I want so say that we all need to see the human side of our family. If you are an honorary big sister to your audience then your audience is your family too. However even with family you don't always want (or need) to share everything, I get that the balance of what you want to share and what your audience want you to share will always be a battle. But I hope that maybe you can see this is a positive battle of others just wanting to be close to you because you are and amazing person. This video shows that you care and want to please and help your viewers, I am a 23 year old girl and I watch you because your insights can be wonderful and you are a comforting person to watch. I am a training therapist and even I cannot understand the volume of which your viewers want to disclose their problems to you, they do this just so they can have a tiny bit of your insight and caring side, for you to show them love and appreciation they way can seem to with others in your life. You once said you love easy and hard for others and in a way your views want you to share that with them in their hard times and thats amazing but they darkness of the worlds problems are hard for you to take on on your own, don't be scared to share your opinion and cares be honest they are telling you these this because they care and trust you they know your are all powerful. Please don't carry all these dark experiences round with you. Carry the knowledge that you are a person who helps these people and can uplift their spirit a little be being you, don't let other darkness dim your light when you can allow it to shine and the darkness even i its just for a little while. You may not read this and I get that I am just one of many other differing personalities but I hope that you are well and healing over the problems you have experienced by showing your humanity in your mistakes, your audience will heal in time just believe in yourself and those you can help and show what you wish to show and the rest will settle in time. hope this makes sense xxx
Thanks for making this video Carrie! Please never feel like you need to tell us anything. All us hopefuls care about you and wouldn't want you to get hate because you felt you had to share some personal information with us. People need to realise that you have a complex life like every other person. Have good and bad days like we all do. And if anyone does make you feel crap and you feel like trying to het back at them just think that while they are doing what their doing and sending hate to people, you are trying to be the best version of yourself that you can be and that is a much more admirable thing to do. xxxx
Sort of off-topic but Ben seems like a genuinely great guy who I'd love to have a chat with. Also I find the ever-evolving discussion surrounding the relationship between UA-camrs and their viewers to be really, really interesting, and I appreciate this video a lot, for that reason and others. Thanks for being so genuine and open in this video, and I hope you're having a nice day :)
*Little high five with a stranger* As someone who discovered you through bad press, and who is probably connected to you through the individuals that make your job difficult, I want to let you know that I see you as a complex individual. Someone who inspires people as well as some who makes mistakes. I recognize that my opinion of you doesn't really matter much, but I have my degree in public speaking and I understand how difficult it is to recover after miscommunication with a very large audience. Obviously there are strategies people use to allow others to see them as complex humans, or to recover from poor communication, but from where I'm standing, you seem to be doing a fantastic job. And you'll get better as you go, because you're complex. I may not know you, but I genuinely think UA-cam is a better community with you in it... And I'm not even subscribed. Good luck, and great vid.
This is completely beautiful. Honest,Vulnerable, Carrie... just her, with every imperfection she has (as a human being does). Thank you so much Carrie, I really appreciate this. Also I can identify with you on many things you mentioned... I hate being misunderstood and I always freak out when I feel like people don't like me, I could cry and cry if someone just told me that they don't like me. Again THANKYOU this is is absolutely beautiful inside and out, thank you for sharing, you looked very nervous.
No one should ever feel that what they do won't be good enough for anybody. Only remember that you will not please everybody, but you will always be amazing to somebody x
I really hope that Ben makes more of these interviews, it's really interesting to hear youtubers talk frankly and at length about these sorts of things, hear their side of the story and find out more about the things that they think. And I think that Ben's perfect at asking the right things and having a manner that makes people want to talk and open up.
Aww Carrie you're such a good person. Everybody has their bad days and it can seem magnified in your case. I just want to let you know that fhe good hopefuls support you in all you do and wish you the best. Have a good day big sister
This video proves that you don't need flashing lights, glittering studios and zippy transitions to hold people's attention if the guest and interviewer are engaging to watch. Television could learn from this.
I agree! You hit it on the nail! I SERIOUSLY was not going to watch this entire video . . . but before I knew it - it was 24 minutes later . . . !
Eufracina
Same here.
I agree! I sat down with a cup of tea then BOOM! Twenty-four minutes later it was gone!
Thank you for making this, both of you. This is so brilliant.
This was very successfully humanizing, and something I think a lot of people need to hear and think about.
I love your channel!
Morgan! I love your channel * flies away *
^-^
Well done.
Am I the only person who was subscribed to Carrie months before realising that she's Tom's sister?
I didn't even know who Tom was until after I watched Carrie.

Great video, nice to see you talk openly about your place in the youtube bubble. It seems your need to be liked/a people pleaser causes you a lot of anxiety. Lovely to see that you've already realised its an issue. Like all of us you are a work in progress. I'm always here if you need me x
Oh Gary, trust you to come up with the perfect response to a wonderful video. Love you both, take care
Totally agree! Ben Cook needs to go interview more UA-camrs on their channels haha
I feel like it will help her fans to see her as a person rather than a youtuber, like as a well rounded person
Ryan Lamont sounds like a plan. :D
ninebrassmonkeys You should Ben! Enjoying watching this ^-^ xo
I vote for Danisnotonfire!
Fabulous video Carrie! Super interesting.
🍒Cherry🍒
that's very true i sat here for the full 25 minutes sucked into the computer.
I was just letting you know that i agreed with you, i just went that long way round about saying it :).
carrie, you've been through so much lately. publicly too. i hope you are not too stressed out.
The reason why you're seen as a big sister is because of how intelligent and honest you are, people have attached to you because it's kinda comforting to watch your videos. Not to forget the fact you're talented, your voice is amazing, I've played you to some of my students here in Taiwan and they love it! :D
Ben Cook, prober of UA-camrs
Carrie, you are the cutest. I hope you feel better knowing there are loads of people who know you're just a regular human being and support you.
ninebrassmonkeys This was fantastic. You should definitely make this a thing.
Possibly the most important upload in years. I hope everyone takes the time to see this and see it soon.
This was a great video. Ben's awesome at interviews and Carrie's awesome at answering and being awesome
OMG, you said exactly what I wanted to say. :)
I was trying to put my thoughts and feelings on this video into words, but you did it so perfectly so im just gonna agree with you.
thank you
Megan Carter well done I really think you spoke for all of us :)
*****
yeah me too! it's heartbreaking that she feels so bad when all she wants is to be a good person and make others feel good too.
Two of my favourite people in a video that explores youtube culture and carrie. No better way to pass 24 minutes on the internet.
I thought this was brilliant - and Carrie, you have at least one fan who understands you are a complex individual, just like the rest of us.
I agree completely! Its such a good way to see the real them and how they perceive things
Twice I've met Ben, and both times he was genuinely great person.
awwww.
Ben Cook: the Oprah of UA-cam
Loved this video, started crying half way through, it really hit me emotionally. Thanks Carrie and Ben! :-)
I totally agree :)
Really enjoyed this video, learnt a lot about Carrie. Love Ben's interviewing style too.
Carrie, you are amazing. Not because you are perfect, but because you are who you are. Thanks for everything. It makes my day when you post a video.
Carrie please remember that the hopefuls are always here for you
It literally embarrasses me that there are hoards of screaming fangirls following people at conventions. It's awful! I only hope UA-camrs can remember that there are some people who aren't like this. I would love to just have an intelligent conversation with the people I watch :)
Wonderfully put! Exactly how I feel :)
A friend from Malaysia,
Shalina xxx
As long as the content itself is engaging, a simple set up is so incredibly effective. This interview pulls it off amazingly.
so sorry you're feeling a bit rubbish just remember we are here for you like you are there for us and don't put any pressure on yourself because its not worth it xx
UA-cam would become a dark place if you were to leave! Honorary big sister Carrie!!
What you've said is so true! She doesn't need to tell us anything so what she IS telling us is great and I love hearing about the little things :) x
Dear Carrie,
Some of us still love you. Even when you're clumsy, unscripted, or unprepared. We get that you're human.
From,
Your Hopeful Viewers
this is my favourite video of yours to date, it's so real and honest and just completely you. well done!
Props to Ben Cook as well. He really is an editing genius among men. (Plus he's hilarious)
This was beyond amazing! Two different youtube 'characters' really laying it out there. It was great fun watching and loads insightful.
It was very brave if you to do this Carrie. (I've obviously only just started watching it, but I'm looking forward to it.) x
Carrie I really admire you for doing this interview. Stay strong shake it off! And maybe your next book title can be Complex Carrie or something.
I really like this! I think these subjects should be talked about more often because like, everybody's just human in the end.
1) Great video, everyone should do something like this
2) I hope you are ok after all the 4:01 show stuff. When people started saying that stuff I was just like WHAT THE HELL THAT WAS CLEARLY NOT WHAT SHE WAS TRYING TO SAY
3) Even though your bipolar isn't officially diagnosed yet it's brave of you to come out and talk about stuff like this.
I have NEVER understood all of the hate on her, she is such a pure, honest person.
I think this is really important. Thank you.
This was awesome.
Carrie we love you.. Please don't ever forget that
this made me feel...a lot more grounded, in a way? i actually really liked this. you're cool, carrie, and i really, really appreciate your honesty (to the amazing extent you've shared your life with us). yay. have a nice day.
i wish every youtuber had this video vith Ben Cook just talking. That is the most intresting thing
And if anyone does make you feel crap and you feel like trying to het back at them just think that while they are doing what their doing and sending hate to people, you are trying to be the best version of yourself that you can be and that is a much more admirable thing to do.
xxxx
I could watch this for years...
Thank you for amazing 25 minutes!
No carrie please dont stop UA-cam, your the only person that gives me hope in life :)
This is great. I'd love to see Ben do a series of these interviews.
