Back in 1993 or 1994, I was maybe 12 years old. I lived in Ironton Ohio. I was in 8th grade at IHS. My dad worked at Malone's Junk Yard and he would let me come along with him and I would hunt for Tapes and CD's in the cars.
One day we spot a Teal Blue Trans Am with a Factory Digital Dash and T-Tops. My dad bought it and we fixed it up together and painted it jet black. Then we ordered one of these JC Whitney light bars and my dad cut out a space in the nose to install the light bar. It was me and my dad's pride and joy. Lol. Me and my dad didn't always get along good, but when he was kind he was the most kind person I knew. Thinking about all these old forgotten memories is kinda painful. Holy crap we all got old, didn't we. ❤

Hey, there, Joe! I was driving a Saturn SL2 in the late 1990s, and I purchased a J.C. Whitney scanner bar back then to decorate it. My father helped me install it, and he could not find a spot under the hood to set it (and it wouldn't have been visible from the front anyway}. So we wound up mounting it in the grill at the bottom of the front bumper. I got Amber because I didn't want to get pulled over if I left it on while driving.
Well, it got attention, for sure. When I went out at night, I'd turn it on, and it would really turn some heads. It was fun, for a little while. My sister from South Carolina called them "ni---- lights," and it did seem that black people enjoyed seeing it the most. Go figure.
But here was the problem: I live in Michigan, and the scanner didn't survive the winter. Apparently cars on the road in front of me were kicking up snow mixed with salt, and within a couple of months the lights shorted out and the scanner quit scanning. Very sad. Well, Dad helped me take it out of the car the next summer, and I didn't bother replacing it because I knew it would just die again in six months.
So that's my story. I enjoyed pretending to drive a KITT for a season, but had to let it go. Now I drive a Honda Fit, and I just call her KITTen. No scanner, but she's a dependable car anyway. Thanks for reading my comment.

I used to love Knight Rider back in the 80s. My seven year old boy started to ask if he could watch it a week or two ago. It was one of the best feelings! We are only half way through Season 1 but he loves it! I've been a subscriber to your channel for ages now and when a new video is uploaded I get the same feeling I used to get when a new Knight Rider episode was about to start. Keep up the good work guys 🙂❤️👍

I put this on my Saturn SC2, and later my Mazda Miata. I went with the amber version to avoid running afoul of the law on the street. I always turned it on while competing at autocross events, which gave everyone a good laugh!

JC Whitney started as Warshawsky Auto Parts on the south side of Chicago. I used to go there as a kid with my Dad. I loved going there with him because they had everything in that catalog in the store including that scanner. I wanted my Dad to buy one for our car. It didn’t happen. They later closed and moved to central Illinois. Smaller showroom and bigger warehouse. One of my favorite things we used to do together. I miss my dad very much! Very cool, thanks for bringing these beloved memories.

In 1989 I began Freshman year in a vocational high school. I took electronics. At some point in the year I had to pick out an electronics project from a catalog that I would buy and complete as a class assignment.
I bought a Knight Rider scanner. it was the exact same JC Whitney bar, but completely unassembled. Even the circuit boards were bare.

What a great find from the past. As a kid in the 90's, I rarely saw cars with the red scanner light, and I remember visiting with my parents one of my uncles who lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in the summer of 1996 and saw a white Honda, Nissan or Toyota two-door coupe with pop-up headlights and a working red scanner. Unfortunately, I don't know the brand of the light. It still looked great, but not as great as the one on Kitt's front bumper.
Speaking of Kitt, it was the first time I watched Knight Rider in English with Dutch subtitles. I couldn't understand or read a word, but it was fun to rewatch a familiar episode in another country. The episode was Just My Bill. I always watched the show dubbed in German or French. What great memories. Knight Rider was more often on German TV and was still being broadcast in Germany last year.

My beother bought one new from jc whitney back in the mid to early 2000's, and put it in the grill of his 96 ford taurus hahaha... I still have the orignal control box for it. It introduced me to transistors for the first time in my life at a very early age, when he accidently shorted some of the wires to ground causing certain lights to stay full-on, and some channels to no longer work...
I learnt what transistors were, learnt what the pins do, and even rapaired that controller years and years and years later! I had to replace a lot of the leds in the control box that got broke off, but its good as new now lol

Awesome intro. I saw those even though I wanted one I never got one. I kept pushing it off. In the 90's someone made a truck with Dangerous Toys painted on it based on the band and their clown character Bill Z. Bub. They put a red scanner on the back of that truck. I looked it up $29.99 in 1997 in 2025 is $57 & in 2000 $26.99 is approximately $55.20.
I wouldn't mind making a Knight Rider bicycle with one of those are some newer versions of that. Last thing when it is on screen it looks like that scanner is shooting laser beams at you.

Whitney one but is of different construction along with a totally different control box that operates the same way but doesn't go as slow as the j.c Whitney control.the company was advertised in the high performance pontiac magazines and pre dates Mark's custom Kitts ect. I would order off and on from JC and I remember seeing the scanner light in the catalog but never ordered it. I always had a concern about the legal aspect if having a red moving light on the front of the car. But I did cheat somewhat concerning that thought. My father was a member of the local volunteer fire department and he ket me mount his teardrop red dash light on our car's dashboard. This was the same car I drove during high-school. I grewup in a small town and rural area so as long as I didn't turn the light on, the police never bothered me about driving with a red dash light. I attended a private boarding school for high school but I lived off campus, never lived in the dorms. I would get a lot of puzzled looks from students and staff when I would show up on campus driving a car with that red daylight.
Looking through the other comments, I noticed no one mentioned that KARR had the amber scanner light. Find it and build a replica KARR.

It would be nice if someone could replicate the effect with LED's so that it wasn't such a massive power drain.

Seems like a simple enough project.

Many people do these days. The only downside is that, if you want a trail, it'll flicker on any camera.

It's worth the power drain. Plus incandescent just have a way better feel

I still wish the original series could have had 2 more KITT "siblings", another good car with blue scanner and voice box and another bad car with green scanner and voice box, each being female!

I’m guilty of buying one, but never installed it. After a countless number of moves, I’ve lost it.
I would love to have pictures of the circuit board and chip numbers. I know it’s a shift register ic chip, but I don’t remember the other 2 chips that were used.

I had the amber one on an 85 Camaro. If I still have it I can send it to you

Yep bought one of those for my kitt replica. I was in heaven. My friend still uses one in his replica. But I now have one of Brenon Fulbrights 55 watt halogen scanners.

I had this exact one from JC Whitney.....until my best friend tried to mess with it and up the brightness. Needless to say he fried it and never replaced it.

I totally had one on my Fiero Gt. Separate 12v alarm battery so I could leave it on. Good stuff.

I want to to know about the can of “RED POP” on the cabinet behind him. Is that an authentic no frills product?

I nearly bought one of those about 20 years ago...nearly, I got in touch with them asking for dimensions etc. I do however still have a smaller, unrelated blue scanner from the now obsolete knightlight website! It looks similar to those used in the Torchwood Discovery but scans back and forth using a PIC microcontroller.
