How to trap moles using a victor clamp trap

  • This is a short tutorial on how to get rid of those pesky moles in your yard! I have tried several different trap styles, and have settled on the Victor 0631 clamp trap. They are only about $10 and available at most any home and garden store.
    I have been using these traps for several years, and have trapped around 100 moles with them.

    Thanks for the video. I have used these traps for a couple years now and they are the best solution on the market I have found! Recommend.
    Couple thoughts on this video that are important"
    * USE GLOVES - Moles can smell human sweat/scent
    * The area under the release trigger should be a firm built up "bridge". The mole must displace enough soil to push that trigger up.
    * Release can be set "hair-trigger" - sometimes this is optimal

    I’ve had moles for two years that have been destroying my lawn. Used one these traps and the bucket method yesterday. Within 3 hours, I got a mole! I had resigned to the fact that it was impossible, but I was wrong. Thanks for the video.

      Unfortunately they weakened the springs on this trap now. I bought a cinch trap by Nash after going through every trap on the market and they are hands down the best these days.

      Me too (caddyshack).
      I was thinking of running a pipe from the exhaust of the lawnmower onto the run.
      Is your mole saga over? Did you catch any?

    I agree that these are thje best traps that you can buy. Great instruction video about how to use these things. I mean, other than giving a little more detail on how to actually physically set the mechanism this is as good as one can find on how to do it. USER BEWARE - be careful when setting the spring mechanism. You can literally lose a finger if you are not careful. That's probably why they work so well. Thanks for this vid.

      My traps are a little old and I couldn't find the bars to set the traps, so I started useing the table vise to squeeze the traps together. Takes a little practice to get the traps lined up in the vise where you can squeeze them together, but it works really well for me to set my traps. Mine are so old that the traps don't even have the saftey catch on the traps, so I have to be extra careful after my traps are set loosing the vise and being sure I hold the traps where if they happen to go off I won't get my fingers broken! Ouch!!!! Nice think is when it's in the vice that trap not going anywhere till you loosen the vice up enough that it could go off if you happen to hit the trigger at the wrong time! If you try my method, just be careful. I'd hate for anyone to get hurt!

    Try putting the dead mole back in the tunnel. Moles are territorial and new moles generally will not encroach into a tunnel with scent of of original occupant.

    I don't see any runs in my yard, just sets of mole hills. I am sure it is a mole because of the type of hole. I can stomp down all the ground the day before and come back to find nearly a dozen mole hills in the morning. They are usually in sets of 2 or 3. Could I assume there are runs in between the hills? would it be better to place it in the hole or in between the two? I have tried setting this up in 3 different places with no success

    • @MattVerley
      @MattVerley  8 років тому

      I just clear the dirt from each hill and feel for the tunnel; not every hill will be an ideal location for a trap. When I find a good location with a clear tunnel, that's the one I go for.

    • @amberweinmann9441
      @amberweinmann9441 8 років тому

      The tunnels are hard to find with my soil, as it is completely sand, without even having any grass. The run I had used the other day should have been a good location, because I checked it in the morning to find huge molehills on either side but the trap still wasn't triggered. I used a tool to test it, but it wasn't triggered until I hit it hard directly on the piece. I am hoping it is a defect and I can get one more effective if I exchange it

    • @MattVerley
      @MattVerley  8 років тому

      I wonder if the sandy soil is the problem? I've found that if I don't pack down the dirt thoroughly under the trigger, the moles go right through without setting off the trap.

    Have you ever tried using diplomacy
    come to a compromise, just joking, I have a problem in my yard with these critters but I had never seen one and didn't care much about researching, and did not know that you could buy traps for them, this was a very helpful video I appreciate you sharing, now I know exactly what I have to do, they sure are weird looking little creatures, Mike

    • @MattVerley
      @MattVerley  10 років тому +1

      I attempted diplomacy but failed. My minister of foreign affairs (the dog) seemed to get off on the wrong foot with those little guys :)
      They sure are destructive. If I don't get a handle on them early in the year, they make hundreds of dirt mounds in my yard during the summer, and then the dog goes crazy trying to catch them and makes even bigger holes.

I set it exactly as shown, the mole springs the trap and keeps on trucking as if nothing happened. I wouldn't give you $.05 for 100 of your traps, they do NOT work. PERIOD......

      I've caught 4 in a week and I only have one trap. The trap totally works. Did you make a mound of dirt in the middle of the hole so when you lower and set the trap it barely touches the lever that activates it? Once I did that, it worked every time.

    Sets traps to catch moles because they are destroying the yard. Does more damage to the yard than the moles themselves by digging and setting the traps.
