      The reason that it's not for sale is because the charged csot per hour is $50+ and this could take 4-8 hours to make. Plus materials. Plus markup. And resale costs, shipping etc.
      No one would want to buy it and no one would want to sell it.

    It’s a common misunderstanding with these close fitting wire EDM tchotchkes that the wire actually cut the pieces of the puzzle apart from the solid cube that is the completed puzzle. No, the wire is not even close to thin enough to cut a kerf that narrow. This video shows the correct process, where the pieces are cut separately, then later assembled. Nice vid 👍

    I finally get it (I think). I couldn’t figure out how a wire that thick spoils make cuts that interlock so seamlessly, but the cut DOES have some width to it. I always thought the the puzzles pieces once joined were the original block B4 the cut, but the pieces are cut out of a larger block and are cut so precisely that they fit together that well.

    • @DaedalusR
      @DaedalusR 2 роки тому +84

      Same. Didnt understand that they start out as completely unconnected cut outs that are then placed together. I thought it started as a cube that was so finely cut it created multiple cutouts. That’s why the wire confused me as well. Honestly the fact that they’re different cutouts but still that accurate is probably even more impressive.

    The real trick of these puzzles is they look like they're cut from one block, but each piece is cut by itself, because otherwise you'd see a gap where the cut was.

    just in case I mean no disrespect by this, but i love how the "manual" surface grinder is still a massive piece of machinery and considered "manual" because of the human input instead of physical labor. The change in language AND tools showing how the craft and the age has changrd

    Okay, I worked on one of those machines in college and I couldn't figure out how you got "zero tolerance" between pieces if the wire is a few hairs thick. That makes sense. Now I can think of some Hot Rod applications. Thanks.

    Lucky for me, I work in tool and die, more than forty years. Since we are an R+D toolroom, we have down time between projects. We make all kinds weird little things, even puzzles like in the video. Lots of cool magic tricks require tool and die. The average person doesn't comprehend the accuracy of the things that we manufacture. .0002 of an inch tolerances can really help create illusions, such as a seemingly solid block of stainless actually being a puzzle. Nice job by the way.

    But since you cut the pieces individually with huge gaps between them does it really matter how thin the cutting wire is? Maybe if you cut some amazingly detailed design that fit together in the same way.

    My old science teacher's story about significant figures:
    His friend got a cool 10x10cm metal cube for $30 from a machinist shop. He wanted the same one so he went there and asked for a 10.00x10.00cm cube, and it was $300, lol
    Edit: Commented on the wrong video; too lazy to fix but had to explain, lol
