Thank you SOO much Ashley I really really do appreciate your kind words!! It keeps me motivated and pushing to keep making vids. I wish you all the luck in the world. Keep your head up and Keep ROcking!! Happy Thanksgiving and GOD BLESS!!🤘🙏🤘
Glad you liked it Mo im trying to get more to the point in my vids.... actually harder then I thought it would be. Thanks again and appreciate the support! 🤘🙏
Great info, I been “feeling” this for a while, bought sets of gray wash and only using the lightest mix. Yep, won’t buy any gray wash again, thank you sooo much!
Yeah that was the same experience I had with pre bought washes. Not to say they are all that way but I deff prefer to make them myself. Glad you enjoyed the video Laura and thank you for the support!🤘🙏🤘
First video I ever put a like on. Truly helpful. The fact that you tattooed yourself to really help others see the difference is amazing. Good shit my guy.
Have you ever tried not using distilled water? Saturation of the black can simply depend on the amount of time you go over the area as well as time spent on it and other factors like needle depth. The person who "taught" me to tattoo has been tattooing for about 10+ years he told me to only use black, no water. Its a bit of a learning curve but I don't have to rinse my needles to go lighter and I get very consistent results. I first started using this method and find I prefer that one MUCH better. Less complex and more consistent once you get the hang of it.
Hmm that seems pretty cool and deff something that would take some time to get use to. I think for me I will stick with distilled water as im comfortable with it. You are correct when it comes to needle depth and what not as you can make a dark shade lighter with you tattooing hand. I find this to be less consistent In my opinion but thats whats awesome is that we can all have our own way of doing things and share that with others, SO thank you for sharing that Copic and thank you for watching and supporting the channel!! 🤘🙏🤘
That's awesome you sacrifice your leg for us. My happy go to mix dark to light is; full, 50/50, 8drop, 2drop, and last but least my rinse cup. 🤘 keep up the good work brah. Thank you for whatcha do.
I do like that as a set up as well pretty much just drop the 16 and 4. I could see that working out pretty well. Thanks for sharing that with us Jason and thank you for watching and supporting the channel its much appreciated!! 🤘🙏🤘
One reason I'm trying to stick to only 4 different values making Grey wash. Adds that value from full to low contrast, been working for me lately😁 Great video man👍🤘
I deff understand that as I usually only end up using 4 of the 5 most times but I like the idea of having that one extra option lol. Thanks HandleBar appreciate the support my friend and Keep Rocking!!🤘🙏🤘
Working light to dark also helped, generally with b&g sure block all black in 1st if it makes you comfortable and alot of people work dark to light, but also possible to work light to dark, building contrast and depth layer up, I find working light to dark allow to keep the light tones light and darks dark, helping push as much contrast into the peice as possible 👌🤙
Absolute game changer! I have been using Dynamic's grey wash set and now I know why my 20% bottle is empty and the others all half full. 🤯 Thanks again brother
Yeah I feel you brother as I kept using a lot of my lightest tone not realizing that I needed a larger range of lighter tones. Really glad to hear this video helped you out!!! And thanks for the support Rhyno!! 🤘🙏🤘
Putting 4 to 6 drops of white in your ink caps (except for 100% black) will give you a good indication of how it will heal. There is so little white used that it doesn't turn in to real greys, its just a good visual tool.
Been tattooing for a year now and I started with a lighter drop system like this 100%/50%/25%/5drops/2drops/1drop. Sometimes I leave the 5 drop out. Love the channel!
It’s still same color, if you expect a lighter tone mix black with white to get a lighter tone. What mixing with water achieves is it makes each stroke apply less ink. One stroke of 100% will be significantly darker than one stroke of 25%. But if you pack the the color all the way through it doesnt matter, the lower % is just gonna take more time to pack - but It’s still the same black
Why not just purchase the appropriate ink(s) for the job? They make graywash, light graywash, etc. That's how I get my system set up. And believe it's the best technique I've used thus far. I mean, sure this system/technique works. But I feel it's something to begin with to learn values, range of tone and how to saturate. It's how i started over 8 years ago. But to eliminate the "guesswork" and other stress factors I find it best to apply the appropriate inks to get those levels and tones saturated well. Less headache, great results 👍🏼
Yeah I had a few people telling me they where having problem figuring out there shade set up and how things look when they are tattooing and how they look healed so I thought I would make a quick video showing it. Glad you enjoyed it Ivan and thanks for watching and supporting the channel!! 🤘🙏🤘

I do the exact same thing but I put out 2 or 3 extra caps of just water if I feel to dark I just hit a cap of water that’s just the way I like to do it. I bet you have used pre mixed washes and hated them lol I know I have all are to dark for my likeing. I like listening to what you have to say.
Thank you.... I just started tattooing (myself) and havent been able to get my blacks to the right shading (like that will help my dumbass lol) amazing video thank you for the time you put into it and explaining why not just showing....
Your very welcome Thomas!! Glad to hear this video is going to able to help you out. As knowing your shades can really make a big difference. Thank you for supporting the channel my friend and Keep rocking!!🤘🙏🤘
Thank You very much from México, just two questions: 1. Can you tell us how many drops of water do You need to full that cap size? 2. Can you use percentages? For example: 1. 100 % black 2. 30% black 3. 15% black 4. 7 % black and 5. 3% of black. I think would be a little more easy to understand or apply if we have a different cap size. PD. Sorry for My English, cheers! Thank
hi im tattoo artist and with experience I stopped to use just color black to make my own greywash . so thinking about it one day I just took the ink like if i will paint on a canvas so I made my own greywash as always but now with drops of white ink and also color set grey but not too solid so I use this color with mixing solution to make the color grey more flexible. till now I dont have problems about how my tattoos will heal cuz I know what tones I used .if you feel confuse still . the brand rawpigments and empireink has a set ink called whitewash is basically the same but I preffer to make by my self my own grey wash with withe ink and color grey xD. but nice video explaining about the black grey wash. ED
This video helped a ton. Thank you! Got a question for you: I have fair skin like yours and I noticed my tattoos heal with a blueish hue, like yours did here. Can anything be done to prevent/combat that? Do you ever mix your black with warmer tones like browns or oranges for fair skinned clients? That would be a really interesting test. Would love to hear your opinion. Subscribed!
Thank you Casey glad the video could help you out. You could try using a darker black, like triple black or big sleeps or zuper black as they tend to stay a bit blacker longer.
Hy can you help me please, btw u rock. I am at begining in tattoing. I tattoo pretty decent tattoos, but I got two problems. Im using preshade dark, medium and light graywash ink (Intenze).Dark and medium work perfectlyp1, but light one, when I put needle in skin, no ink goes in and all I can see is small cuts from needle and small blood ( when shading with curved mag.) Any tips? And do you use more voltage when packing color vs shading? Ty so much.
Didn’t the several passes with light tones hinder the example of what you COULD get by shading correctly.? I feel like the multiple passes til you saw something made a difference.. for information sake
There are a lot of color packing videos & shading videos, but what about shading/highlighting with color? Like lighter(say pink) vs darker like red or is is even possible/worth it? Thanks for the help.

I love how you teach man. I've seen that some artists mix a few drops of white into their grey washes. I hate to ask, but could you try this again adding a little white and see if there's a difference?
Thank you, Dave! Last night, my boss and I sat down and discussed this technique. He was checking my work and asked how did I get my greys lighter, this is pretty much what I did. He was impressed that I figured that out on my own. It really does make an incredible difference. 🤘😉

Your SOOO VERY welcome Maili!! Im really happy to know the channel has helped you out!! And thank you for sharing the content as it really does help the channel out!! Keep being awesome Maili and Keep ROcking!! 🤘🙏🤘🤘🙏🤘
good video! i use presets, extra dark, dark, medium, light, extra light. I like not to do it myself, because it's 100% the same every single time, not 1 drop more or 1 drop less.
That is also a good way to do things but for me I like to really know what each of my tones look like fresh vs healed so for me Im glad I found a grey wash set up that really fits my type of tattooing. And I think buying premade wash is a great way to always stay consistent as well, just never had much luck with premade washes. Thank you so much for sharing Simon and thank you for the support!! Keep Rocking!! 🤘🙏🤘🤘🙏🤘
I started with drop system, but I didn't love how you can't exactly see the tones while tattooing. Now I use empire greywash and it's so much more consistent. If I were to mix again I would use white instead of water because I noticed that will keep redness down and I feel it heals better.
Hi im Elisabeth from Holland sorry for my english,my question is ,the short taper OR middel taper OR longer taper what Doesn't maen ,which one to use for a tattoo van you explain tot me thnks a lot greets
I make you right.. when I started out I'd use the Kiro sumi black, grey and light grey.. Everything was kinda dark. Then I tried the Silverback grey washes, which are good.. however.. like most bout 6yr back I went for mixing my own.. After much experimentation.. I now use.. Dynamic triple black (packing) and lining black Half cup black and water Quarter cup black and water 2 x cups of water.. of which Itale a good dip as and when need a lighter tone.. works perfect for me.. if it's a longer piece I re dilute the water cups as the day rolls.
Amazing video brother. I also use the 2-4-6-8-16 and black method been working for me for a few years. Another technique I use is adding a grey undertone to some of the heavier wash to even the shade (or fade from dark to light). You should give it a try it looks good and it makes the blend a bit smoother. Again amazing vid
Thank you so much Richard glad you enjoyed the video. And thank you for the advice as I will certainly try that out as it seems like it would deff make for a smoother blend. How much would you add as an undertone if you don't mind me asking. Thanks again Richard appreciate the support brother!!🤘🙏🤘🤘🙏🤘
No problem brother I'm glad to share my tips as you are yours. Honestly I've only done the grey undertone one way I simply take either dark grey or light grey mostly light grey for the tattoos I do and shade how I would normally with the grey wash then I just go with the grey from the darkest point to just about the tip of the lightest point. If I use the darkest grey I have I add distilled water and use it like grey wash under the black. If you give it a try brother let me know how it works for you
Perfect timing! (I had to take my gloves off to type) I was literally just practicing the English bulldog black & grey realism portrait that my friend wants me to tattoo on his arm. He wants me to do the tattoo asap & says he'sconfident that I'll do well. It's my first tattoo on someone else & I want it to be perfect. Plus I'm not going to lie, I'm nervous.. Anyways, I'm just having trouble with my shades because on fake skin it doesn't heal & fade so this definitely helps with telling tone difference after healing on real skin as opposed to reelskin. Pun intended.
Thats awesome to hear your putting those reel skin pieces to work and practicing the piece your going to be tattooing as that is so important and will really help you out once you go to do the tattoo. And if you have to practice it a couple time as the more work you put into the back end the better the final result will be. And yeah fake skin doesn't heal lol, but im glad this video can help you out. Keep at it brother you got this and Keep Rocking!! 🤘🙏🤘
Lol I'm also working on practice for a dog portrait for my buddy; the first attempt looked more cartoonish caricature than portrait photo, 2nd try was much better realism wise but his main complaint was that it looked too dark. I tried to explain that if it were on his actual skin instead of a practice skin it would heal much lighter. I'd rather practice how I'm actually going to do it but he didn't seem to get it. Unfortunately I'm going to have to do a third one which sucks at 5-6 hours on each one but I guess that's what practice is for lol. The drop system I use is in between the two he shows in this video; I'll go ahead and try the lighter setup and see if I do better with it. Anyhow, good luck with your doggo portrait

Yeah I did abt 15-20 tats with the 25,50,75,100 it’s all dark. I end up washing out my lightest color an trying to make up a light tone. Now I’m doing it almost the same as your second set up. My tats are coming back with great values and it made my work so much better
Hey doing a little digging here 😅. Really interesting video and ty for the sacrifice of your leg 😋. I was wondering is dilution of ink the main way to get different values or is it also a possibility to use the same dilution but doing a "lighter" packing like just go one time in the area if you want light tones and go 5/6 times if you want more dark tones etc... ? Or maybe using different needles/drop/voltage etc... Ty for your answer if you passing by 😊
and just like that, all the guys charging multiple thousands of dollars a day, tens of thousands for sleeves, completely completely hate your ass. i'll add, when you pack in a two drop SOLID, the more you go over it, the darker it is. I THINK. maybe test on your leg.
Is black and grey all color packing? Like can you just lightly cross hatch with the same ink and same needle but slow down when you need it darker? Or are you packing each shade
Here is a link the INK CAPS that I use as I know this makes a huge difference: 17*14mm amzn.to/3DowqvJ

@@SI-xj5tq less passes and more open skin. I've started to use true greys instead of grey wash but like he said its up to preference.

Thanks so much for the video 🙏🏽
No problem Xavier my pleasure brother!🤘
I make you right.. when I started out I'd use the Kiro sumi black, grey and light grey.. Everything was kinda dark. Then I tried the Silverback grey washes, which are good.. however.. like most bout 6yr back I went for mixing my own..
After much experimentation.. I now use..
Dynamic triple black (packing) and lining black
Half cup black and water
Quarter cup black and water
2 x cups of water.. of which Itale a good dip as and when need a lighter tone.. works perfect for me.. if it's a longer piece I re dilute the water cups as the day rolls.
If you give it a try brother let me know how it works for you
Are you going to remove your old grey wash video since you have a better technique for it now?
I may remake that video as I prefer the current wash set up over the old one.
I feel bad for watching your videos so many times and subscribing just now. Thank you for all of this

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUUUUCH. but now the question is - how do you blend the shades (hand speed and all) (on a bigger surface as well)
hi are u useing lining black on both
Its just Dynamic black. You can use it for lining and shading or what not. Hope this helps.
Thanks man, will try this.
no problem Hamish!🤘
You saved my life dude
So glad to hear that Joe!! Keep at it you got this man!🤘
Yeah I did abt 15-20 tats with the 25,50,75,100 it’s all dark. I end up washing out my lightest color an trying to make up a light tone. Now I’m doing it almost the same as your second set up. My tats are coming back with great values and it made my work so much better
Usually I use a full ink cap 50%, 12 drops, 6 drops and I usually decide on wether I have a 3 drop or a 1 drop depending on the skin tone.
Thank you
You're welcome🤘🙏
Hey doing a little digging here 😅. Really interesting video and ty for the sacrifice of your leg 😋. I was wondering is dilution of ink the main way to get different values or is it also a possibility to use the same dilution but doing a "lighter" packing like just go one time in the area if you want light tones and go 5/6 times if you want more dark tones etc... ? Or maybe using different needles/drop/voltage etc... Ty for your answer if you passing by 😊
👍👍👍🇵🇭
🤘🤘🤘
and just like that, all the guys charging multiple thousands of dollars a day, tens of thousands for sleeves, completely completely hate your ass.
i'll add, when you pack in a two drop SOLID, the more you go over it, the darker it is. I THINK. maybe test on your leg.
Heres a random question why is there barely any opaque grey tattoo dog portraits? Could only see a few on hole of google
Is black and grey all color packing? Like can you just lightly cross hatch with the same ink and same needle but slow down when you need it darker? Or are you packing each shade
And I sometimes put 6 drops of white just to make it easier to see on the skin, hopefully that helps anyone
Is the distilled water from a convenient store safe to use?
Yeah As long as it’s distilled water doesn’t really matter where you get it from.
@@ArtSomething can i do it on colored inks as well?
Merci !!!!
🤘🙏🤘
Did you washed the needles in the first process, after black saturation , going to dark and medium
Wow amazing man ima do a tattoo on myself to check my shading and practice there hopefully soon
This is excellent info Dave. Thanks pal.
ps,, happy V day
