Lord Shiva is beyond comparison when it comes to self-sacrifice.
Here in this video, we'll find out how lord Shiva came to be known as Neelkanth.
Lord Shiva have many names. Every one of his names carries a fascinating and knowledgeable story behind them. One such name of his is Neelkanth, which means 'The one with the blue throat’.
The fascinating tale behind the name Neelkanth goes like this...
Once, to attain immortality, the gods and the demons came together to extract Amrita (the nectar of immortality) by churning the sea. This event of ocean churning came to be known as Samudra Manthana. A lot of things emerged from the sea during Samudra Manthana. A deadly poison called 'Halahala' also arose in the process. This poison was so lethal that it could destroy the entire creation of the universe.
Soon after its emergence, the poison started spreading its lethal fumes. Fearing the end, the gods and the demons pleaded to Lord Brahma to save his creation. He told them to seek help from Lord Shiva as he was the only one powerful enough to control such a deadly poison. The Gods and Demons then pleaded to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, a compassionate being that he is, without giving it a second thought, decided to drink the poison himself to save the entire universe. With his powers, Lord Shiva collected the scattered poison and drank it in its entirety. As soon as his wife, goddess Parvati came to know about this. She manifested there and grabbed his throat with both hands just when he was about to swallow the poison. She did that not only out of love but also to ensure that nothing unfortunate would happen to Lord Shiva, as it could bring about an adverse effect on the universe. Because of this act of devotion and love of Goddess Parvati, the poison got clotted in Lord Shiva's throat, and its toxicity turned his throat blue.
So, that's how Lord Shiva, protector of the universe then, got hailed as Neelkanth. Since then, devotees propitiate this name whenever they want to seek divine protection from Lord Shiva.
The name Neelkanth is not just a symbol but also very much a legend.
We'll get to know about the stories behind the other names of Lord Shiva in future videos.
