Despite the incredibly vocal interpretation, I don't like the music for this opera but if just one single person could change their mind and think the death penalty is an abomination, then I'd be more than satisfied. On my part, on a personal level, I can add to the lyrics of this video what follows: "You don't know what it's like to become a pen pal, then a friend and then a sister to a death row inmate and wait with him for his sentence to be done." It's the most insensate, unjust, devastating pain I ever experienced.
I haven’t seen the opera, but to the best of my understanding: Sister Helen is a nun working as a spiritual advisor to and advocate for a man who’s set to be executed for murdering two teenagers and the whole opera is about her experiences and journey along the way
I also haven't seen the opera and have only seen these videos that the Met has posted. However, if you go to the Met's website there's a pretty good summary. It's based on the book "Dead Man Walking" by Sister Helen Prejean, who is a well-known opponent of the death penalty. There was also a movie version starring Susan Sarandon that came out in the '90s. It also sounds very interesting to me but I don't I'll be able to see it live. Hopefully, Fathom will show it in theaters like they have for other Met operas.
notyouraveragejulie below got it right. I was at the performance, and it was stunning. Much better than i had anticipated. The last ten minutes, I counted three coughs, in a very large house -otherwise dead silence (pardon the pun). Some of the most moving moments I have experienced in 40 years of going to the Met..
Overall, this opera works better theatrically than musically. That said, Heggie's writing in this scene is heart-breaking.
Whichever elements work best, I chiefly applaud the ambition of adapting Dead Man Walking for the opera.
They sound lovely. I'm so curious about this!!!

Originally I don't like the music neither, but that's the magic, it's an unpleasant, sad and stressful experience. Real story, real feelings.
"You don't known what is like to believe in love and forgiveness and deal with you, vengeful sons of bitches"
What is the premise of this opera? Sounds very interesting
Premise? Like what kind of opera?

Is that Angel Blue on the right
No. Lol it doesn't even look like her. 😂
I think that’s Kristy Swan
No, it's Krysty Swann in the role of Jade Boucher.
