  • This video show how easy it can be to convert newer RTR OO gauge locos to EM gauge using a simple gear puller and a back to back gauge.
The thought of re-gauging locos can be quite daunting but hopefully this video will show how easy it can be with just the basic tools. Some locos might need there bogies modifying slight by means filing away some plastic but in this video I will show the basics of re-gauging rtr wheels sets to EM gauge.
For those of you out there thinking of going EM please don’t intimidate if I can do it anyone can it’s not as scary as it seams. It’s also well with joining the EM gauge society as there is lots of useful advice and also access to the members shop which sells everything from gauges to track making products, here’s a link.

I use a GW Models wheel puller for my conversions.
To assist making more accurate adjustments I measured the pitch of the thread on my puller. The pitch was 1mm. This meant that each wheel need one complete turn to move the back to back from 14.5 mm to 16.5 mm.
    Easy!

@@tulyar1043 thank you for pointing out that EM is smaller in gauge than P4 and not correct, that was the exact point i was making.
PS. try getting your calculations right next time.😀

Brilliant instructional video. I am just going through he same process of converting to EM. I followed you when you had the O Gauge and was very impressed with your track modelling. Can I ask what make of baseboards do you use for your layout builds? I am looking at the Grainge and Hodder boards for my next modular build, which will be both EM and O gauge

Hi Martin many thanks for the kind words, in the past I’ve used Tim Horn for baseboards but for my layout ELJ I’m building at the moment I’m just going to build my own frame work as they’ll be ‘open top’.
Hope that helps and thanks again.

Brilliant video! Very useful for someone just getting into EM. Do you have a link for that gear puller?

It’s scary if you have two Standard 9Fs three Britannias and two BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0s to convert 🫣
