    Thanks for sharing this video. It was exactly what I was looking for. I followed trough and was amazed by the result. My layout is for a mystery novel, so I needed something less fancy and we’ll be very glad, when I have to layout a fantasy book.
    I just one to remark that I had problems with formatting the first paragraph of my filler text and after researching I’ve learned that Filler text doesn't behave as plain text (i.e., it is not editable, with selection being limited to the entire block) but you can change this to normal editable text per frame or use plain text by default.
    Control-click any portion of filler text and choose Expand Field.

      Hi there Cgfernandes,
      Thanks very much for commenting on my video tutorial.
      I'm not sure which version of Affinity Publisher you are using, but I had the same problem with filler text in the earlier versions. But since updating to version 1.9.1 and now 1.9.2 I no longer have to change the filler text to Expand Field. I am not sure why this has happened, but I am happy that Affinity probably corrected this issue.
      If you still have the issue after updating Affinity Publisher, then there is some other thing causing this to happen.
      I use an Apple MacBook Pro but this might be a Windows problem.
      I wish you all the best in your journey in Affinity Publisher and books.
      My passion is book publishing.
      Kind Regards to you.

      This does not work if you are going to use the flow text feature. It will not flow into text boxes that already exist. It creates text boxes to do this.

      Thanks very much for your comment.
      You should also check out the other video which is a 3 part series on how to lay out a book in Affinity Publisher. In that series I create a book from scratch and import (place) a Microsoft Word document which is already formatted into Affinity Publisher. This has some new things added to do with importing the MS Word document and how it can be dropped into Affinity Publisher in a much easier and quicker way.
      I'm glad the other video you have watched has helped you.

    If you ever update or redo this tutorial (or add new ones), if you would change the UI Style to Light, as compared to the Dark setting you have; (Edit/Preferences/User Interface). It would make it much easier to see which page or Master Page you have highlighted as well as the styling options on the right side. Thank you.

    A quick question. How do I add the measuring meter you have on the left and top sides of the screen?

    • @RoryMolePublishing
      @RoryMolePublishing  Рік тому +1

      Hi there Adam,
      Thanks for your comment.
      The "measuring meter" you mentioned is actually the rulers which are added by going to the view menu and selecting, "Show Rulers". This will add the rulers to the top and left side of your document. Also make sure that your document measurements are set up in the measurement of you choice. This you must do in the document setup section when you first create a document. My measurements are in millimetres. Yours might be in inches.This is done as you create your document in the "New Document" dialogue box. You'll see the options under the "layout" section to the right hand side next to "document units". Set your desired measurement to any on of the 9 measuring units of your choice.
      Hope this helps you.

    Thanks a ton! Quick question. I created my book for printing as a 5x8 paperback. I want to publish it as a 6x9 ebook too. Is there an easy conversion?

    • @RoryMolePublishing
      @RoryMolePublishing  2 роки тому

      Hi there Bald Guy Sci,
      Thanks very much for your comment and question.
      From what I currently know about Affinity Publisher, it is not able to export your document as an Ebook yet. The creators of the Affinity Publisher are working on this at the moment but there is no date as to when this needed function will be available. There are many functions that Affinity Publisher needs, but this will takes some time.
      If you are using a Mac, then creating an Ebook is quite easy because Apple Pages exports to EPub format which is quite a universally acceptable format for Ebooks.
      I would suggest that you do not try and convert your PDF book into an Ebook. The result may not be what you want. There is much more control using Apple Pages.
      If you have imported your text and styles from a Microsoft Word document, then you are halfway there and if you have the manuscript as an Apple Pages document, then better still.
      If you have the manuscript in a Word document, you will be able to open it up seamlessly in Apple Pages. I would rename the document and save it again.
      The key to Ebooks is to minimise your text styles and resize your margins.
      There are also templates inside Apple Pages which are already formatted with the ability to export them out as E-Pub documents.
      But......
      If you don't have Apple Pages, then you might need to use Microsoft Word to set up you Ebook. Your margins will need to be set to 10mm all round each page. The page size should be A4. Forget about 6x9 because Ebooks don't work like print books.
      Have a look at the following website.
      help.ebooklaunch.com/article/43-difference-between-print-book-and-ebook
      Here you will see distinct differences between laying out a book for print and then for ebook.
      I suggest that you read up as much as you can about ebook creation before you begin.
      I hope you have success with this.
      Kind regards to you.

    When you deleted all the styles early on (they were from a different project); have they already been saved or stored somewhere so that if you wanted to retrieve them to work on the previous project or a new one modeled on the old one? Are they automatically stored with the old project in some way???

    • @RoryMolePublishing
      @RoryMolePublishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there Ricky,
      At the beginning of the tutorial after the document has opened I always go to the text styles tab and delete the styles which Affinity Publisher suggests in order to set up my own. This happens whenever a new document is created. Affinity Publisher suggests it's own pre made text styles upon document creation.
      Once you create your own styles and you save your document, all your styles are retained in that saved document. If you set up a template and create your own styles to go with that template, then they are saved in the text styles tab.
      There is also an option to save text styles that you create yourself as the default styles for future documents. This you will find in the text styles tab as well. Just go over the the icon that looks like a couple of lines drawn on the right of the text styles tab and click on it. You will see the option to save out your own styles as the default ones for future documents.
      It's as simple as that.
      Hope you understand what I have just said.
      Regards to you.

      @@RoryMolePublishing I figured it out. The spine on the last page of the book was showing on the left hand side but it moved to the right hand side after I apply the master page. I cleared the master page from the last page of the book because I didn't want the page number to show on it. Clearing the master page moved the spine to the opposite side. Thank you anyway I really appreciate your rapid response.

    In regards to setting this up, I think I did this backwards. But how do you flow a 200 page book into this template with all the filler text? I don't need the filler text, the document is already written. I flowed my word.docx into the document, then tried to fix margins. Is there anyway to actually change the margins and get the text to reflow? Or, should I just start over with the correct margins, header/footer text boxes, etc? I think I know the answer :-)

    • @RoryMolePublishing
      @RoryMolePublishing  3 роки тому +1

      I've got another video in the list about flowing text from an MS Word document into Affinity Publisher. If you watch that video it will give you instructions about how to flow the text out with minimum effort.

    So with Affinity do I just have to manually flow every single page of text?

    • @RoryMolePublishing
      @RoryMolePublishing  2 роки тому

      Hi there Lucy,
      I hope I understand your question.
      Affinity enables us to take a manuscript for a book created in Microsoft Word and flow it out over the entire book.
      In this video I explain how to create a book template so flowing out your manuscript here is not necessary seeing it is only a book template you are creating. The book template is to give you the feel of what it is like to create an actual book that you will send for print.
      I have another three part series called, "How to Lay out a book."
      This is where I will show you have to flow out your entire manuscript. Your manuscript should be saved as a Microsoft Word .docx document.
      Check out the three part series by going to this link for part 1.

    how to copy and past glyphs in affinity publisher?

    • @RoryMolePublishing
      @RoryMolePublishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there MTM,
      I presume you are referring to the glyph browser in Affinity Publisher and how to bring a glyph into your document?
      It's quite easy......
      Position your cursor at the point where you want to apply the glyph. If you want a glyph to appear at the same place throughout your document, then you will need to place it on a master page.
      Position your cursor at the insertion point on your page, then go to the glyph browser tab on the right of the Affinity Publisher interface. Choose a glyph from your list of fonts. I presume you have "webdings" as a font. I am working on an Apple MacBook Pro which has webdings but you might want to look through your own fonts installed on your system. Once you have found the correct font (glyph), double click on it and it will be inserted at the point of your cursor. Thats how you copy glyphs across into your document.
      If you are looking to add glyphs to Affinity Publisher, then you would need to install fonts that have glyphs in them. Do a google search for fonts with glyphs. A good place to find some is at:- www.fontspace.com/category/glyph
      just download the font family and install it on your system. Then restart Affinity Publisher and the new font will be installed. Then go to the glyph browser and add the glyph into your document as I described earlier.
      Hope this helps.
