I feel you. I first discovered Twilight when I was 13 and that was a really embarrassing time in my life, I wanted the books for Christmas and I watched New Moon three times a day, dark times💀
I hate that your church dropped you. That’s not okay! Not what church is supposed to be. I LOVE this video!! It’s so great 😂 totally went through the scene punk phase too
I... had no phases in my childhood/teenage years. I was more the one who watched her friends go through their phases and when they struggled or lost themselves, I was the one who reminded them who they used to be and helped them get through their next phase.
I didn't have lots of phases, but I'm with you on being obsessed about certain things. Also, I'm totally biased, but never feel ashamed about being a Doctor Who fan lol
Right between my emo phase and my artistic phase I was in somewhat of a skater/Avril Lavigne phase where I had the black pants with all the pockets and the borderline fancy style tee shirt that was super tight with the tiny sleeves. And I would have killed to have Perks of being a wallflower in my life during that time. And then my preppier phase where I was all about Aeropostale and doing cute art projects and listening to music with my hair so flat ironed down you could see the exact shape of my skull under it I would have absolutely killed for to all the boys I loved before. But alas, I did not have them, instead around those times I was only just starting to read heavily and was in love with Percy Jackson
I would say that I went through a Doctor Who phase but it's never been a phase. It is my life. It is the air I breathe. I am who I am today because of Doctor Who and David Tennant hahaha
Most people only really have phases while being a teenager but my personality is also so obsessive that I will probably continue to have phases the rest of my life. Yikes.
Oh my gosh!! Liverpool.. noooooooo 😂 As it Brit... growing up in London I had an America phase and was desperate to live in NYC and go to High School! 😂
I love the videos where you tell us more about yourself and the unique recommendations phases! I had an emo phase and not a scene phase, but one that I associate with that phase is The List by Siobhan Vivian mostly because it really represented how I thought high school would be like.
YAY I’ve been waiting for this! The fact that I remember half of these phases wow Your EDM phase got me into Jack Ü and I’m FOREVER thankful LOVE LOVE LOVE
Hello Emma ♥ I loved this video, what a great idea! For me Again, But Better is just like Christine said "I wanted someone I could relate on my early 20's" And I relate so much with Shane 'cuz I'm just starting college, and I'm the oldest in the class, and I'm not good on making friends anymore, so Shane is a light trough the darkness hahaha!! ♥ I've been trough a lot of phases in my life, but my one big phase, that still is with me is my kpop phase. I am obssessed with Korea for 10 years now, and I don't want that phase to ever come to an end!!! Love you ♥
I was born for this by Alice Oseman perfectly encapsulates my 5 Seconds of Summer / transition between 1D and emo phase moment in late middle school/early high school
God damn it. I'm trying to take a break from booktube, but this is a such a fantastic video idea that I can't resist! I hope everyone turns this into a tag. I'd love to see how people's teenage bookish phases differed/related to one another. One my favorite things about this video is that you acknowledge the problematic aspects of a book like @ 3:00-3:40, but still admit that your teenage self would have loved it. There's a lot of tropes I enjoyed as a teen that I CANT STAND now
Have you ever read “Go Ask Alice”? I ran away from homeat 13. When the cop caught me they put me in cuffs n saw that I had cutts on my wrists. Instead of taking me to the station as they said, they took me to a mental institution where I was held for about a month. One of my Counselors gave me the book and it made me feel like I wasn’t alone it made a big difference.
When I was in my twilight faze I cut my hair short like Leah Clearwater because I so badly believed I was part of the pack 🤦♀️. Now that I look back I cringe and I’m thankful it was just a faze . Now I’m more obsessed with Interview with the vampire .
Becoming obsessed with every new hobby I discover? That’s definitely not me... or is it? Stop calling me out Emma! My only problem is that either the obsession doesn’t stop or the hobby remains anyways as my 5 year long England obsession shows (yup I totally felt your description of it that’s literally me with less union jacks and more posters of British celebrities). But hey technically I still qualify as a teenager... there is still hope. Anyways thank you for your great recommendations as a dancer I always struggle to find books about dancing so I’ll have to check out ‘Tiny Pretty Things’ and who knows I might come around to finally pick up ‘This Song Will Save Your Life’. I really loved the video (you can probably tell by my long comment) and the creativity behind it (:
I too went through a love of England phase, I had a giant union jack flag in my room and my fav shirt was a black tank with a huge union jack on it. That was 15 years ago and I still have yet to go to Europe. Lol
Fatal Throne by a ton of authors perfectly sums up my current Six the Musical obsession. Also, if you liked Tiny Pretty Things, you might like The A Circuit by Georgia Bloomberg and Catherine Hapka! It’s a drama-filled story about a group of girls who show horses on the A Circuit and while it’s not objectively good, it’s super fun!
I love the creativity behind this video! Daysss ago you posted photos of your old dance days in your insta story & now it makes SENSE! It was probably for this amazing video 🙌🏻🖤
I love how you keep coming up with fresh and exciting video ideas instead of merely sticking to generic booktube stuff! Don't get me weong, I absolutely love the fundamentals of booktube but I feel like we need new and unique content like this to expand our community!
Such a unique video concept! Love all the phases of Emma 😂 The biggest phase I had was being obsessed with korean culture. When I was 15-18 I was so into k-pop I legit didn't know any other new music and I exclusively watched korean dramas. The only book I can think of in that realm was "Wicked Fox" but I actually didn't enjoy it much 😂
absolutely loved this video!!!! super unique, great recommendations & omg i never knew you were a whovian!! also i had the same obsession you had with england, but with the usa (i’m european) 😭✨
"I have what you call an obsessive personality" yeah, same 😂 sometimes, when I fall into a new obsession that consumes my life (how dramatic it sounds) I do wish I could like things on a normal level, though maybe that doesn't exist. I don't like clothes, but I love that shirt so much 😱 I had never fall in love with a shirt before.
This was such an interesting concept for a video! I never really had any phases. I went from drawing and playing my DS quietly as a kids to reading quietly as a teen!
When is was in high school (closer to grade nine and ten rather than later on) I had a HUGE paranormal phase. Books, movies, even songs that touched on the topics or werewolves or ghosts or vampires was just my cup of tea. My phase was so bad that basically would turn away from anything that wasn't paranormal or close to it. I think the book I'd recommend for that phase is The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong. Not only did it kickstart my love for anything paranormal but it's overall just a read that fits in so well with spooky October/late Fall reads.
After meeting you at your London meet-up it was so lovely to watch this tonight and realise that you also went through a struggle with faith. I've begun to explore my faith the last few months through a close and dear friend but have been struggling to find my place in church and with how I feel about religion... it's so comforting to know other people go through this ❤
First of all, you look so flipping stunning as per usual and I could cry. Secondly, I too (and still to this day) obsess over my hobbies constantly. My current obsessions include Pole fitness which I started taking last year during my first year of Uni, and horse riding - I start equestrian lessons later this month at uni.
Oh my God, My teenage goth phase!! (I am cringing HARD AF) Hahahaha I thought I was the shit, a witch, thought I could hang with demons and fuck around with the occult. We had Ouija boards and black makeup haha. Book recs for teenage gothic me : Roseblood by A.G. Howard / Twilight by Stephanie Meyer / Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice
Eleven is my favorite too!! And most people prefer Ten so I’m so glad someone out there agrees with me! I love watching your videos cause you come up with such creative ways to make “popular” booktube videos (like recs, hauls, etc) ♥️
I’ve been going through a Sherlock phase since I was 9(now I’m 17).I love crime/mystery books and tv shows. I’ve added a whole new layer recently by playing the bbc Sherlock theme on my piano and violin. My obsession with mystery will never fade. Ha.
I grew up with ADHD and learned to control it with caffeine. Unfortunately, I have an addictive personality and have cut caffeine out on three separate occasions. I would definitely recommend There There by Tommy Orange.
@@halvedemi Maybe it's just me, but caffeine and some OTC sleep medications tend to have the opposite effect on me. Like I'm already really jittery and caffeine takes the edge off and helps me relax.
From the first second of this video, I was getting some real vampire vibes from you. And I don’t know why!! Just can’t. I know that you’re not actually a vampire. Hahaha. And oh my God, I fell in love with Doctor Who because of Charlie too!!!! I just can’t even more!! I am also love England, I’ve never been there, but would also love to actually really great to go! Great video though. ❤️
Great video concept. Nice Try, Jane Sinner is fantastic, sad it’s so underrated. All of Ellen Hopkins’ works immediately come to mind when thinking about my teenage years.
The only cd my grandma has is a basshunter one so when we go on our yearly 9 hour holiday drive that’s the only thing on repeat. And that’s part of the reason why I am the way I am today.
I read Jane sinner when you first started recommending it and I love it so much! I was thinking about that the other day, it is so funny and nobody ever talks about it!
(This was kinda difficult to decide on bc I’m only 16 and I don’t really feel like roasting my current self sooo) Anyway, I feel like the only book that would sum up my phases perfectly would be Fangirl. For starters, I’d venture to say it’s the main reason I’m a big reader now- me four years ago devoured that book and wanted to keep reading more and more after I finished it. Secondly, if you look at my lovely profile name you can see that I, myself, am very much so a fangirl and have been since I started middle school (which again was right around the time that I read Fangirl)
Mine was the concerts & underground bands phase and reading manga all the time. Going to reccomend a mix of the 2 with Nana. A manga, anime & movie about 2 girls both named Nana that meet on a train heading to Tokyo to follow their dreams. 1 is hoping to find her place in life and the other is the singer of a punk band trying to make it big.
11 was my favorite too! My best friend LOVED 10 so I am arguably more versed with the 10th Doctor's lore. The same friend got me a necklace of my name in Gallifreyan. 💙 I want to recommend A Study in Charlotte to my teenage self because I was an avid mystery reader but wanted more drama. There's your mystery, angst, and British flair!
Every time you post a video talking about high school you all I can think is "damn, I would have forced a frienship on this girl in high school". Skins, Degrassi, Twilight, Mortal Instruments, Doctor Who, and an anglophile? Teen me is obsessed with you and 24 year old me is acceptably admiring you from afar.
Hiii! It's actually my sixteenth birthday today! I don't know what my biggest phases have been, I'll have to give it more thought, I suppose. Love you Emma!
Emma, how do you identify religiously now if you're comfortable answering? I think a lot of us can relate in being at least somewhat religious as young teens and slowly changing our minds or just truly finding our beliefs as we age and are able to think for ourselves! Definitely interested in the books you recommended.
I know we have a slight age difference (I’m 27) but I love that Basshunter was your intro to EDM because it was also mine! And then I got obsessively into DDR and found tons more, and then of course UA-cam happened. What a journey lol
You continue to fascinate me in every video! I'm incredibly proud of the person you have evolved into over the years & wish you the absolute best in everything you do! Thanks for the video!
In my teens I started exploring living a life without religion. It was the beginning of my acceptance of being an atheist. I would recommend the book "The poisonwood bible" by Barbara Kingsolver to my younger self. I read it a few years later as one of my required college readings and it was one of those books where I had the thought while reading "wow, I wish I would have read this sooner". It is about a missionary family sent down to the Congo. Unfortunately this was a time of great unrest and war in the Congo and they find themselves trapped there with minimal provisions. The father is devout and tries relentlessly to convert the tribe to his beliefs, while the mother and her daughters slowly adopt a more Congolese way of living. This book was a real eye opener. I feel like living in the US we are conditioned to think "well why don't they just do it like this" when hearing about the hardships developing countries face. One great example from the book was when the father went to plant all the different seeds he had brought over from the US. One of the village women who worked for them (cooking, cleaning, etc...) told him he was doing it wrong and to do it like "this". He dismissed her and took it as an insult to his manhood and to God. Later it rains and the beds where the seeds were planted were washed away. He knows they would have been saved had he done it the way the woman told him to but he is too proud to admit it. The gradual departure from religion the wife and children went through (and the difficulty of that transition) was something I resonated with and would love to have explored earlier. P.s. this book is phenomenal as an audiobook!
I loved this video!! I too have an extremely obsessive personality! My cringiest phase was definitely my supernatural phase that I had at like age 12-15, i used to wear dozens of bracelets from hot topic all over my arms that had spn quotes on them, my room was decorated with spn blankets, I used to draw sigils from the show on my walls(much to the horror of my catholic mother) I could recite some of my favourite episodes word for word. I remember one time I got into such a heated argument with someone online about why destiel was the superior ship, that they said something about coming to find me and I got so scared I deleted my whole account 😂 I definitely knew more bout the supernatural characters and lore than I did my own family... Not sure what book I’d recommend for past me, maybe American Gods? I’m suddenly struggling to think of a fantasy book with a good sibling relationship, if anyone wants to help out
Superhero phase (still in it): Renegades by Marissa Meyer Gaming phase: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Geeky phase (Doctor Who, Star Wars, Marvel, DC tv shows etc. also still in it): Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde Doctor Who phase: Passenger by Alexandra Bracken Reading phase (still in it, praying I'll never leave it): The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin Scene phase: The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde (wasn't the biggest fan of it when I read it recently, but I think I would've loved it then)
This is such a great video idea ! Truly loved it ! This is definitely not the first time I am hearing you talking about This Song Will Save Your Life, and I really have to read it. The way you talk about it makes me emotional and I’m really intrigued because Imagine Dragons is my favorite group and they definitely had a huge impact on me as a teenager so I feel like I have to read that book at least once ! Also I really have to FINALLY read Again, But Better, because since English is not my mother tongue but a language I deeply love and want to learn, OF COURSE I’ve been - and still am - OBSESSED with England as well ! Anyway, it was, as always, an amazing video. Have an amazing day xxx
Damn Emma you are soooo creative with your video ideas! I really enjoyed this video. I as well had my fair share of teenages phases that were incredibly embarassing so...props to you for even being able to look back without cringing, but then again yours weren't as cringy as mine so ;)
This is such a fun video concept! I also loved The Archived and I'm bummed that we never got the ending of the series. One of my teenage phases was being obsessed with classic rock and the 60s in general, so my book recommendation would be The Girls by Emma Cline.
Get ready for drastic changes: I went from being this girly girl(diva, as they liked to call me) at the end of elementary school(-13), to a bohemian country girl(13-14) in the beginning of middle school, to GOTH and then rock chick(14-16) for the rest of middle school which overlapped with my fandom phase(including DW)(15-) throughout high school(which is when i discovered booktube and got back into books more than before, tho i always enjoyed reading) that I'm still not out of but is more of a lifestyle today(21) let's be real.
A shame about the archived probably never being completed :( I want to read those books but I hate never knowing the end? I need to read tiny pretty things and this song will save your life. I am so sorry that everyone in the church suddenly dropped you. That's such a horrible way to treat someone and breaks my heart... And yes doctor who is the best! I am a 10 lover but 11 is great too :)
I had a serious one direction phase in middle school. I would recommend Our Chemical Hearts. I just know I would’ve cried even more to up all night if I had read this book then.
My phases were definitely based on pop culture... the twilight phase, the selection phase, the hunger games phase, the scandal phase (but let's face it, my obsession with Shonda Rhimes and Olitz has never ended), so I'd recommend The Beautiful to my Twilight phase self... it's a better, more diverse, more atmospheric, better written version of Twilight!
“I have what you call an obsessive personality” never have I related to something so much.
same
lmao yall relate to a personality disorder??? cool
Imagine a book called A Thousand Phases Of Emma Grace. It would be a #1 bestseller. When are you going to write it, then?
Emma looks like some kind of Vampire Goddess and I'm there for all of it, LOOK at that shirt. Holy shit. I love it.
My Twilight phase in adolescence was soooooo bad. I remember reading Eclipse 8 times during a family vacation I didn‘t wanna be on 😅
I feel you. I first discovered Twilight when I was 13 and that was a really embarrassing time in my life, I wanted the books for Christmas and I watched New Moon three times a day, dark times💀
Dor Cat I feel you 😬 Dark times indeed
I hate that your church dropped you. That’s not okay! Not what church is supposed to be.
I LOVE this video!! It’s so great 😂 totally went through the scene punk phase too
Emma definitely struck me as an Amy Pond girl. So much sass in a smol bean
I... had no phases in my childhood/teenage years. I was more the one who watched her friends go through their phases and when they struggled or lost themselves, I was the one who reminded them who they used to be and helped them get through their next phase.
Just started watching and DAMN I LOVE YOUR SHIRT
see I’ve had a shit ton of phases but like,,, they all kinda just overlap and create chaos for forever.

Emma has blessed us with her beautiful makeup. Thank you
I would say that I went through a Doctor Who phase but it's never been a phase. It is my life. It is the air I breathe. I am who I am today because of Doctor Who and David Tennant hahaha
Did anyone manage to dodge the scene phase? I think we all had to get through that phase to level up to young adults. 😂
Alysa Morley me!!!! Never went through it at all though a lot of my friends did.
I never did. I’ve been a quiet book nerd my entire life. I think I associated being scene with MySpace which I didn’t have.
My husband did but I sure did not dodge it
Dodged it cause I was a goody two shoes 😂
okay can we just acknowledge her BOMB look gurll urr prettyyy
Thank goodness I'm not alone in the obsessive personality department lol

13-year-old me can definitely relate to 17-year-old Emma..... (I still have the union jack rug in my bedroom, oops)
YESSS! Again, but Better is such a personal and relatable book. I read it last week and felt so understood, even though I'm 26. I highly recommend it.
GOD those whovian pictures look straight out of my life 😂😂😂😂 the messy tardis cake??? Same 😂😂😂
YAY I’ve been waiting for this!
The fact that I remember half of these phases wow
Your EDM phase got me into Jack Ü and I’m FOREVER thankful
LOVE LOVE LOVE
that's such a creative idea! the queen is back👑💕
I'm 22 and definitely still going through my all black, band t-shirt, emo phase. Don't see myself growing out of it any time soon xD
Same here.

1 is hoping to find her place in life and the other is the singer of a punk band trying to make it big.
this is such a cool idea, so creative but so cute too!!!
11 was my favorite too! My best friend LOVED 10 so I am arguably more versed with the 10th Doctor's lore. The same friend got me a necklace of my name in Gallifreyan. 💙
I want to recommend A Study in Charlotte to my teenage self because I was an avid mystery reader but wanted more drama.
Happy birthday!
This is such a great video idea.
I definitely relate to having an obsessive personality 😄
Ok but this whole look 🙌🏼❣️ makeup and top👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I missed your videos so much! It’s good to have you back and I hope you had a great trip.☺️
this idea is everything👏🏼
haha I was a goth kid also Degrassi
I’m suddenly struggling to think of a fantasy book with a good sibling relationship, if anyone wants to help out
This is such an amazing video idea and an amazing list of phases and books! So fun to watch, thanks Emma :)
Wow this is such a creative idea! I absolutely love this :D
And you look so gorgeous
Superhero phase (still in it): Renegades by Marissa Meyer
Gaming phase: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Geeky phase (Doctor Who, Star Wars, Marvel, DC tv shows etc. also still in it): Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde
Doctor Who phase: Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
Reading phase (still in it, praying I'll never leave it): The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
Scene phase: The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde (wasn't the biggest fan of it when I read it recently, but I think I would've loved it then)
This is such a great video idea !
I love love love that shirt !! Also this was such a fun video idea !!
This is the actual sweetest thing you could have done for your younger self.
this is one of the most creative video ideas i've seen!
For some reason this video made me feel the warm cozy nostalgic feels
This was such an awesome video idea! I also really enjoyed Again, but Better! I thought it was reay cute and has some important themes 😊
This is such an original video, Emma!
I'm so obsessed with your wardrobe
