as someone who's struggled with the very same devil's as Jerry, and continues to do so, I cant tell you how powerful this song is to me. It makes me cry just about every time, because it points all out the weakness's, but also offers the hope of redemption and a better (cleaner) life... I'm between 24 and 36 hours of being clean, cold turkey, and watching and listening to the Dead, because they've never brought anything but peace to my troubled soul, and with their music I dont feel so bad.

No matter how bad things get (Homeless, drug addiction, jail), Jerry is always there to make life a little better.

This is a great version of this song! This is the Dead that I grew up on and loved, the Keith and Donna period. I remember sleeping in alleys down by Fisherman's Wharf in the 70s and thinking of this song. Place is very different now... as is everything.

Right, he plays like a monster in tune who might toss a bomb at you or hand you a flower or both.

Jerry can sing the shite out of this song..... What feeling, pathos, and integrity to the moment....... breath taking to behold.

God Bless them all! truly a beautiful and historic moment between them. And yes a very Fine Wharf Rat I saw them 3 months before in Florida. I consider myself one of the lucky ones.

I imagine someone finally giving a shit enough to take a minute to hear this guy's story and tell him his girlfriend's loyal through rough times meant way more than a dime for a cup of coffee

there was nothing then or now even remotely like this band when they put it all together... they didn't do it very often, but I was there when they did a couple of times... and in those rare moments, they were really something... I don't know what to compare it with... maybe seeing Marley in Jamaica or Jesus in Jerusalem... but you came away with a different soul than the one you went to the show with!

even though his voice was not quite on top. Intense show but some how a distracted feeling. The departure of Donna and Keith must have been more or less agreed on at this time?

78 Dead to me has all the athleticism and finesse of 77 with an added coke fueled reckless abandon. Like killers with a gentle side. It's fucking wonderful.

Another autobiographical song in one instance during Jack Starw, "Hurt's my ears to listen Shannon, Burns my eyes to see"..Jerry had just flubbed the first verse and Bobby looked directly at Jerry. Intense, until Jerry shut him up with a blistering solo. Will get back top you on the show, it is on the Vault series...

they were not in debt but the manager took off with their money. broke, they were under the pressure to produce an album, they came up with 2 albums i think. they did not produce any hits but they were working hard all the time, as hunter said:"we were made to work -hard-" my knwoledge of the Hell Angels as security gards is when rolling stones hired them for the woodstock, part of their pay was in beer! when they saw a black man and a blonde "sexing" they killed him, the concert got chaotic
