Carol of the Bells (originally based on a traditional Ukrainian New Year's song, Щедрик) always had this Baroque ring for me and in this arrangement, it works so beautifully on the hurdy-gurdy. 🤩 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone! 🎄❤️

Very nice...
Your instrument is beautifully haunting is a way. Do you mind if i ask which country the hurdy-gurdy originated from?
You use reverb big time wrong and it sounds very bad.
the hurdy-gurdy does not get enough love in modern society. Thank you for making wonderful music like this.
My pleasure! More is to come! 😊
Fun fact. It didn't get the love it deserved back then either. It was considered a low class instrument. Despite its complexity.
This instrument is absolutely wonderful. And the way this lady is playing ... wowww ... just amazing !
I know an artist that goes by patty-gurdy I think, she has a few songs and stuff and mainly uses the hurdy-gurdy in them, along with other instruments of course but she plays it
It was designed to play a very specific kind of music, and mostly by itself. It has such a "loud" voice it's hard to make it work with others. Not very versatile, not much of a team player
This young woman is clearly very talented and a wonderful musician. This is evidenced by the fact that she can make such beautiful sounds come out of the 3-way love child of a guitar, a manual meat grinder and a typewriter.
😂😂😂😂
Just wait until you hear that the inside of the instrument is basically almost like an accordion- it doesn’t have a pumping action the same way that the accordion does, not like puffing air by extending and collapsing, but, the similar buzzing sound an accordion creates is made by drone strings and a “pumping” action of the “crank” (the wheel inside).
It’s also been likened to bagpipes, instead of an accordion, for how it makes the buzzing sound. The “buzzing bridge” inside makes this sound.
And it’s a little more like a violin with how the strings are played inside the instrument when the crank is turned, but it is held similar to a guitar.
Not sure about this, but what's funny is that this instrument is way older than any of the things you mentioned
@@Lights_of_Silver I don’t think anyone is insinuating that the hurdy gurdy actually comes from these other instruments. People are just comparing it to other instruments people are generally more familiar with. 😅
@@kathleencove I know, just found the time-line funny and wanted to point out
I've never heard the hurdygurdy played so well - using different techniques to fully colour the music and so emotional. Great arrangement too.❤ Merry Christmas.

Carol of the Bells is my all time favourite Christmas song, and I love the hurdy gurdy. Love this.
Funny story, it wasn't originally a Christmas song; it's an old Ukrainian folk tune before that.
@@TheRealSkeletor which is also the best version:)
@TheRealSkeletor but the original is pretty close to being a Christmas song. It's a "shchedrivka" which is a Ukrainian New Year's song
I've always thought carol of the bells sound quite ominous, and the hurdy gurdy "cranks" that up to 11
The superior version has arrived.
I liked the start especially kinda liked how dark it was, maybe another version with more of that darkness?
That was truly amazing to hear. The gurdy's sound definitely compliments this beautiful song. Well played!
Fantastic arrangement! Really shows off techniques that are unique to the hurdy gurdy - well done. My favorite part starts at 1:50 and then the pattern that starts at 2:00.
That was a magnificent rendition. I think the hum, drone and echo improved the base spookiness of the song even further.
Merry Christmas and all the best wishes 🎄🎁✨
One of my favorite things about the hurdy gurdey is that the clicking of the keys plays a part in the music itself.
Would absolutely love to learn it one day. Unfortunately the only guy in like 100 miles who knew how to play it passed away shortly before moved to the place I am now.
@@toesniffer9452 UA-cam! ❤
Sorry, I found the clicking annoying.
You'll also like the nyckelharpa, then.
That's a beautiful hurdy hurdy. I'm absolutely obsessed with this instrument. Love this rendition
Dang! You're amazing. Like the Eddie Van Halen of the hurdy gurdy. Love this.
That was amazing. At times it gave me Tocata and Fugue vibes which is another piece I love. So different from the sea shanty type pieces I’ve heard played on this brilliant instrument. Thank you so much.
1:28 to the end ... Wow, just wow ... Goosebumps
Merry Christmas! 🎄
My sister hates this song, but likes the hurdygurdy. I will definitely get her to watch this. Thank you for a fun Christmas present! Happy Holidays!
Ale weź nazywaj to Szczodrzykiem, albo Szczedrykiem, albo pierwotnej ukraińskiej nazwy (potencjalnie przeliterowanej na angielskim alfabet) używaj :D w końcu to nasze, słowiańskie ;)
Beautiful! The Ukrainian composer of this carol was Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych. He was an early 20th century advocate for independence for Ukraine from Russia. Ukraine was annexed by Russia under Catharine the Great in the 18th century. Leontovych was murdered by Soviet agents in 1921, yet his carol lives on and is extremely popular.
what a masterful and elaborate arrangement! Ukrainian baroque is smiling on you warmly.
God God thats astonishing , what an amazing instrument and superbly played !!
❄Thank you for introducing me to such an ethereal instrument ❄
The hurdy-gurdy sounds like an ancient machine working once a gain to sing a song older than everyone listening to it,
It's like hearing magic.
Happy Holidays!
Such a Beautiful Ukrainian song performed on an ancient Ukrainian instrument Glory to the Ukraine!!! 🤠👍🇺🇦
Beautifully done! Happy Holidays!! 😊🎄☃️🎁
Happy Holidays! 😊🎄
Dude, the last half a minute or so got surprisingly metal. 🤘 This is awesome, way to go! 🔥 🏰
definitely ❤
Carol of the Bells is just the lyrics. The tune is an arrangement of a Ukrainian folk song called Shchedryk. Given the current attempts to erase the Ukrainian nation from history, it's important to give proper acknowledgement.
wow, I didn't know hurdy gurdies made that buzzing sound (0:45) , I always thought it was some sort of reed instrument
It’s called a drone. Bagpipes have a drone as well. They have different mechanics in play, but the same charm. Or, if one doesn’t care for the reedy background sound, its anti-charm.🙂🙃 (I love the drone especially in the hurdy-gurdy.)
To be even more precise, the buzzing sound is produced by a special kind of drone string known as trompette string. It is tuned higher than the low drone and has a "floating" bridge which jumps when you turn faster and produces the buzz.
that's awesome! :o
OMG, there really is a thing called HURDY-GURDY ???
настоящая музыка. очень красиво. спасибо.
Jest szansa na wersję z wokalem z oryginalnym tekstem (czyli "Szczedryk")? ;-)
Hello Michalina Nice Work keep going🎉
Carol of the Bell or Shchedryk as original in Ukrainian!
I think this is one of the most hauntingly beautiful things i have ever heard in my life
So beautiful ❤ love it
густой звук, прямо осязаемый. Хурди-гурди не спутаешь ни с чем. Исполнение просто великолепное, БРАВО!
Wonderful- merry Christmas
Wow! Amazing! 🎶🎵🎶😊🖤
this carol suits the Hurdy Gurdy perfectly
Fanbloodytastic!🤩
This is the Carol of the Law. 🥅
Nnniiiccceee!!!
😳 Absolutely amazing ❤
Fantastic!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
That was a nice pleasant surprise and interruption. Thank you for taking time to play, film, edit and post this video. Merry Christmas!
Wow! To my ear it sounds a tiny bit like an electric guitar, but better.
Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas!
Being subscribed to this channel finally helped me truly understand the meaning behind the song Hurdy Gurdy Man.
Magnificent. I'm getting so much of Vivaldi's vibes here. Excellent work and performance.
This musical instrument was made to listen to, drinking grog in ye olde tavern.
Ey, it is a legend is such places.
Totally beyond amazing Michalina! 🤘🏻
Very beautiful. Love that instrument. Talented, creative, blessed. 😊
Amazing playing with the left hand!!! Wonderful !!!
One of my Covid projects was to build a hurdy gurdy model out of wood. It doesn’t reeeeeally play, but you can turn the crank, work the keys, and get an awfully scratchy tune from the strings. Anyways, I love this instrument, and it’s always a pleasure to hear someone play one!
Absolutely splendid!
Can you add this to Spotify as well? I want to put this on my Christmas playlist.
It is on its way to Spotify :) Unfortunately my distributor is very slow. In the meantime, here is a Bandcamp version: michalinamalisz.bandcamp.com/track/carol-of-the-bells-hurdy-gurdy-instrumental
The hurdy-gurdy is an instrument of medieval origin, not Baroque; however, I like your interpretation, and I think the piece "Carol of the Bells" suits this magnificent instrument very well.
I'll miss you in Eluveitie, but it's great to hear from you.
Truly excellent and great fun to watch and listen to :)
Beautiful.
Warm Holidays to you and your loved ones!
Nice 🤘🖤
just perfect! thank you! 🥳🤟
Thank you for listening! ❤️
This was awesome! Unfortunately, for the first part, my Millennial brain sang, "I work at Burger King, making flame broiled Whoppers".
Beautiful skill, amazing instrument, horrible plastic control mechanism. It's loud, imprecise, and by the looks requires alot of effort to change the sound.
Love this!! :-)
I make that two Christmas songs I enjoy now. This and Sabaton' Christmas Truce. Yeah that a Christmas playlist 😂
"Carol of the Bells meets Vivaldi", says the thumbnail. If Vivaldi ever composed for the hurdy-gurdy then I've never heard of it. The only thing that comes close is Nicolas Chédeville's fraudulent use of Vivaldi's name, and he composed for bagpipes.
I've never heard of a Hurdy-Gurdy before, but I love it from the first minute. Sounds incredibly good. Well done. Bravo 🤗👍🏻👏🏻
I like this music, though it doesn't sound like really baroque. It does more like free eclectic improvisation.
Carol of the Bells is a Ukrainian Shchedryk. Created on the basis of traditional Ukrainian New Year's music, known in the villages. In its original version, perhaps it existed already during the Baroque period. Only peasants probably used other instruments.
A practical sculpture! Inter-active Deus ex machina! Thank you, ma'am.
Well that was unexpected. And absolutely incredible! I loved it!
Too bad it doesn't have a chromatic key to end on a happy note---literally. Especially back then during the dark ages, minor chorded tunes were ended on a major chord---a happy note.
Beautiful Michalina! I love this carol and you have breathed new life into it!
Thank you so much, I'm so happy it made you feel this way! ❤️
Beautifully played, wonderful sounding old instrument!
Love it! Merry Christmas!
Donovan Leitch turned me onto the hurdy gurdy a long time ago, I wonder if I would've ever known what one was without that song. I recently watched an excellent documentary on UA-cam on the history of the hurdy gurdy, pretty cool stuff. 🕊💖🎸
Michalina, wow, many thanks! Your interpretation is something that transcends time and space!
This should be played out the window at midnight of Christmas Eve.
'carel of the bells' talk about cultural appropriation 🙄 the song is called shchedryck.
Best 3 minutes of my day. Brilliant!
Thank you very much for very nice interpretation of this Ukrainian carol!
Merry Christmas!
Blessings upon all good folk.
Might i suggest the circular movements of great cellists anf the artistry of the pianos left hand ?
her right hand motion could be easily replicated with a motor controlled by that left hand keyboard implemented with an analog intensity control, freeing up her right hand for a better performance, well, just a suggestion
What about discussing the co.poser, and the instrume ts left hamdedness ?
✨✨😱😱😱✨✨👏👏👏👏👏👏
i asked chatgpt to make me a list of medieval instruments and it recommended me the hurdy-gurdy, instant new fav instrument
This isn’t being offensive at all, but this sounds like a Dark Souls boss theme song.
Thank You. I never herd this instrument. Have a very Merry Christmas
i really like the mechanical sounds, but i wonder if theres a way to make the keys much quieter, to get the clean string sound
Amazing as always!
Nice! I wonder if a hurry -Gurdy could be made with a foot pedal and a bigger range?
That's a piano 😉
Or a bellows-organ, also known as a harmonium, an old hand-pumped box with a keyboard that was easy to take from place to place in the Old West or the UK fete circuit-used like the older Indian instrument called vaja (?) that plays by hand-pumping a back-board on the portable box-like reed organ, to push air through the reeds while the musician works keys or accordion-like push buttons. I’m not sure which instrument is older. The accordion or Italian concertina might have some relation to them, as well. The harmonium I’ve seen didn’t seem to have much drone to it, while the Indian version had quite a bit.
There is also one instrument called viola organista which is piano version of the Hurdy Gurdy - exactly as you described with foot activating the wheels and piano keyboard casing the strings touch these wheels and making a sound. It was initially developed by Leonardo Da Vinci, and reproduced by one guy in Poland few years ago.
Fantastic!!!
Дуже гарно. Вперше бачу такий цікавий інструмент
Haunting. Beautiful. One of my favorite songs.
So my new D&D Artificer Bard plays one of these now.
I...I have no words. This is...just wow.
That adds a whole new atmosphere to the carol. Blinkin' nice, well done.
Entrancing and beautiful, loved this
Best Christmas song, amazing performance!
