I've always loved how hyper aggressive and gritty he sounded in the 90s.
It's funny....often artists START OUT all aggressive....and then mellow over time.
Michael was kinda the opposite. His early stuff is often really sweet. But the 90s new jack swing era was HARD. So much ENERGY! Love it.
It’s because he was on a personal journey of discovery about the World. Before MJ died he was onto the whole game that our Governments play to keep us all divided, I personally think he was killed on purpose because he was starting to inspire people in ways that the Government didn’t want. Basically he was “Redpilled” in the truest sense because he knew exactly what was going on and wanted to bring people together before it’s too late. So as MJ’s worldview became more solidified and hardened so did his music. “I don’t sing it if I don’t mean it.”

He songs where very calm and sweet during his Jackson 5 days, and the beginning of his solo career with the albums: "Got To Be There", "Ben", and "Forever, Michael".
His most successful albums "Off the Wall" and "Thriller" had those smooth disco tracks and rhythm n blues as well as some dance pop songs.
In "Bad" (1987) he adopted an edgier and harder image. His singing style changed and used more a more aggressive style. For example, in songs like "Human Nature" (from Thriller) the song is very smooth, but in songs like "Another Part of Me" the song has some very hard beats and isn't as smooth.
In "Dangerous" (1991) he adopted new jack swings genre and it really added more to musicianship.
In HIStory: Past, Present and Future: Book I (1995), is when his songs really started sounding more gritty and aggressive with songs like "They Don't Care About Us", "Earth Song", "Come Together", "Scream" and as we see here "History".
Yea the thriller off the wall era was more of funky dance synth type of grooves and his singing style was more smooth and elegant. With bad he presented his new sound with a more in your face new jack swing style production/ with gritty vocals. Then with dangerous he basically mastered that griity sound and more Alplified new jack swing styled production from teddy Riley / Jimmy jam terry lewis. The history era he worked heavily with jimmy jam n terry Lewis. That era was more of a modern version of new jack swing with like hip hop / pop styled grooves combined with smooth / Gritty vocals

I remember buying this album (I'm 36) when it first came out and I didn't even know what was about to happen when I inserted the discs and heard this new side of Michael that was just on a different level. These tracks are criminally underrated - BUT - the true fans hear, reading comments like mine will gives this a mother fucking thumbs up! Miss you Michael... thanks for giving us these albums that are truly one of the best gifts in my life. If you are wondering, Earth Song is my favorite track on this banger of a disc set.

I love how multifaceted this song is, goes from its heavily sampled beginning straight into hardcore and funky New Jack Swing Hip hop (which instrumental wise are my favorite parts), then to a motivational slow jam that maintains the scratch sample repeated in the previous section, then into celebratory parade like orchestral that decrescendos down, way down, back to where we started. This song works so well as a message because its multiple facets are somewhat emblematic of history itself in how a prime can lead directly into a war, how someone can stand up in the midst of a war to put a stop to it which can inspire a new prime. Fantastic song and to anyone trying to find the best MJ song I would always recommend this one be in the conversation.
