    My honest opinion is if it’s that kind of price range with a crappy edge I kind of look the other way. I just did that recently with a Winkler knife and sent it back. Part of the price for that kind of knife is fit and finish. If it’s not sharp or a garbage edge then to me that’s kind of a lack of fit and finish which is what you’d expect if you were paying for that kind of knife.

    They should come sharp.
    I recently bought a Kershaw bottle opener that was on sale at Tractor Supply for maybe twenty bucks. The bottle opener also has a hollow ground blade which came razor sharp out of the blister pack. I could have shaved my beard off with it just fine.
    I don't outright condemn a brand or maker for not sharpening their product well, if the knife is good and correct in other regards. All the same it speaks to a certain complacency, perhaps along the lines of "either the customer is a collector who will only display the knife, or they are a serious user that should know how to sharpen. So either way I can gloss over the sharpening part."
    If the knife costs hundreds of dollars and is "use-oriented" then it really ought to have a good edge on it. Form following function, the edge that looks better will work better.

      The knife is sharp- it's just not pretty.
      But yes, I would think that step 1 before anything else would be edges. Knives cut, nice knives should have nice edges.

    The lack of a decent sheath included with the knife has always pissed me off about Busse. A rudimentary sheath beside the cardboard sleeve should be included in the price. That said, I still love every single one of mine with a passion.

      How many pistols come with sheaths? Why do knives need to. They are knife makers, not leather workers.

    • @Shooter11B
      @Shooter11B 7 місяців тому +3

      @@lyman135 Nowadays quite a few pistols come as complete systems with multiple extra mags, holsters, etc. Now, as far as knives go, if a sub $100.00 knife comes with a rudimentary sheath, and sometimes with an excellent Kydex or other form of plastic/leather or whatnot sheath, why does a $500.00 knife come with nothing? That my friend is the rub. Your knife is essentially rendered useless until you provide a sheath for it from a third party. Unacceptable, at that price point. This practice is generally NOT an industry standard. Some other makers will do it sure (they are also wrong), but almost all high-end makers provide a sheath, period.

      You do know that when you add the knife to your cart there is an option for like $30-35 to add a DannyTheBull leather sheath that fits the knife either black or brown in most knives they sell right??? Stripping it will make it considerably better. The coatings are fairly durable but i just dont like their rhino ling like coating as they create too much drag. sometimes you get a newb that doesnt put a good edge on. But it shouldnt be hard to put a good one on. Though i agree you definitely shouldn't have to at that price.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors

      I keep going back and forth on how much I care about the edge.
      If it performs well should I care?
      It's actually worse in better light than shown here.
      Or for the money should I expect a better and more consistent edge regardless of how it does or doesn't work?
      Ultimately performance will tell which way I go but even if I am 100% satisfied with performance I still think that AT ANY PRICE we should expect better micro bevels. Bear Forest Knives or Very Good Knife Co are selling full customs at extremely competitive prices with esthetically better edges.
      I don't expect perfection however...
      So I keep going back and forth haha

  • @nickiesiple5222
    @nickiesiple5222 7 місяців тому +1

    We've had hallmarks of quality for centuries. One was if the knife had three rivets . We all know perfect doesn't exist. That doesnt stop people wanting to underpay or buy a custom for $20 that is FLAWLESS ASF.
    Thinking about this: marketing to these people is one ball of wax. Another concept is I bought a production knife at a brick & mortar yesterday. I got to hold it to see if it works for my hand. I trusted it was the alloy it said it was, i trusted the thermal cycles were optimal. I feel the cost was the steel, not the whole knife, sheath and overhead of running a retail front. I got to try it and then did not run to buy it for less online. It was an injection molded handle scales on suppossedly an expensive to buy, make and harden alloy with a thermoform sheath. The design was not large sharpened prybar so that peaked my interest. I thought up that ill only EDC this for a year so i really know it and can use it in my best skill.
    What im saying is, without the pain of expectations and being enslaved by my money being more hard won going to a company owned by men/ family that is affluent and disregards how hard won and more valuable (rarer) than it is to them I can take the actual one i now have and if i choose, ignore shortcomings and enjoy it not boil myself alive because i "was tempted" and overpayed. I dont feel stingy and im not the guy who won't pay over $50 for any knife or laugh at people who buy several knives over a $100. Im just saying that this time, im not in it for over $200 and it is spoken of well so ill not feel about the transaction and return on investment like i would a Bark River knives model. Through all that i might have a helluva better experience and get more joy this time. Its a different knife and a different avenue to enjoying my knife enthusiast hobby. We all tell ourselves different things and can be msnipulated by marketing. I pray for more freedom for ourselves than prosperity for big brands if its a choice between one or the other.

    I’ve been using Busse knives for over a decade, always been happy with mine.
    I would be interested in the BTE thickness on this. From what I understand they ship fairly thick from the factory because you can always remove material but can’t put it back, if you want a thicker edge. Is that true or an excuse, I’m not sure.
    Regardless, cool knife.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  7 місяців тому +1

      So in saying that you can make an edge thinner but not thicker- it is true but not the way I would like it to be true.
      You can bring the bevel up thinning out your effective bte- but your primary grind is still thicker higher bte and you still have higher friction when slicing.
      This knife with powercoat comes in at about .050 bte which isn't horrible- I'm guessing dropping the coating would bring us to .040 or .035.
      So far based on my testing I would say that it needs this coating stripped badly.

      I never thought about that! I know in the 1800's they'd ship knives un sharpened in barrels and even without handles attached and that gives the end user more latitude. In THOSE terms its cool.
