Como's version of the song reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the last of his many popular recordings, dating back to 1943, to reach the Top 40. It also spent one week at #1 on the easy listening chart in 1973. In Britain, the record reached #3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1973 on RCA Records and remained on the chart for 31 weeks (longer than any other of his hits in the UK).

Perry was definitely the best singer of them all.He really got to the heart of the song and made it his own.Everything was so effortless with him.Wonderful performance.Beautiful voice.
There’s no way not to feel something from the words of this of this melancholy song, The lyrics will bring tears to your eyes. The lyrics are sad and will make you feel emotional. The music is pretty and fits the theme - tender and mellow.

Grew up watching him on TV with my parents, listening to his beautiful voice and heartfelt interpretations. This is my absolute favorite of his and means so much more to me now.

I really love the video from 1994 when he was 82.. it was a magical performance when he hit the high notes the crowd was applausing so loud because they were glad because Perry still had it..
I was there that night in Dublin (I also was lucky to attend the rehearsals the previous day and watched Perry perform The Father of Girls - my favourite Como recording and met him afterwards) when he hit those notes I felt I was in the presence of greatness. Even now on hearing that recording the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention. One of the true greats.
what I love about these singers, Perry, Andy Williams, Shirley Bassey, tony Bennet et al, no apparent energy but such powerful output . absolute class. not like some from today who screech their way through a song. bravo Perry

@@susanjewitt8783 he was a very nice person. His daughter lived in Indiana. She was a regular customer of my dad's at the meat market he was manager of. She was just as sweet. The family was active in the community arts programs. Good people.

As much as I revere Don McLean, this is my favorite version, Muppets aside. With this musical treatment, the song slows down enough to allow Perry to savour, caress each word, make love to them. Simply amazing.
