  • HOW TO DECLUTTER THE "MAYBE?" & "WHAT IF I NEED IT?" STUFF! Declutter With Me!
This was a hard declutter! A lot of this stuff I've gone through before in the past, not knowing what to do with it, always 2nd guessing myself! I tend to do that a lot, it's almost force of habit! This is stuff that I have placed in the "maybe" pile throughout my decluttering journey. I created a lot of "maybe" piles (too many lol) in today's video we go through that stuff. Some stuff I've had for years, some stuff has recently been placed in the "maybe" pile, some stuff is sentimental! This is a real-life declutter with me, there are 4 steps that I share in today's video that have helped me to make decisions on these types of things. These steps have also helped me in defining my decluttering goals, however sometimes my emotions get the best of me & it's easier said than done, we're going to go through all of it in today's video. No matter where you are in your decluttering journey this video is for everyone & I hope that you take something away from it...and also have fun. Thanks so much for being on this journey with me friend! xo

UPDATE: So weird, when I first uploaded the video the audio was completely fine, but the only way I could fix it was to remove about 45 seconds of the intro, so not much was lost but of course I would have tech issues. LOL. I really hope you enjoy the video, thank you so much for being here with me! 🥰

On your grandmother's plate: buy a plate hangar, find an out of the way spot where it won't get knocked off, and hang it up. It is lovely and that green (seems to) match your walls.

I LOVE this so much! this is so incredibly true! Life is more than constantly moving things all over the place all of the time. Usually if im debating on something, its best for me to let it go and let someone else find joy out of that item! I saved so much for so long. When we had more kids, nothing was really in good shape even though it had been washed, stored correctly, etc. It taught me so much: things are made to be used. Absolutely there are exceptions, but after a decade of living with less, I was ready to finally stop holding onto just in case things and 90% of my sentimental items that were in boxes.

I had some lovely stored clothes get damp from a water leak from the neighbours. I learned the same lesson. Nothing lasts forever. Use it and enjoy it, within reason. Nans China will not be used in this house with its hard as rock floors. Maybe the next one, with carpet. I can accept a few pieces will get broken, but I won't sacrifice it 😂

I watched to the end. Why don't you use the dishes you kept instead of packing them away? This way you can smile and enjoy it! My grandma had these 2 green juice glasses I loved and remembered them. I got them when she passed away. Every time I grabbed for them, I thought of her with fond memories. Sadly, they did eventually break. Yes, I was sad the day it happened, but you know what, I really enjoyed using them while I could. We all know glass items can/ will break whether they are used or packed away. Take them all out and just enjoy them. 😉

You did a great job, Danni. Just because you don't have a place right now for the things you really like, doesn't mean you won't in the future. You've talked about re-doing your kitchen, basement, bedroom and mud room. So perhaps the things you kept, will be displayed someday. AND, by the way, if you are Happy and Content, in my opinion, you are rich in all the right ways.

I love the idea of purging holiday decor- I've finally got mine exactly how I'd like it. Every holiday (and I only decorate for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) I use literally every piece of decor in the bins. There's something satisfying about that- knowing I'm truly enjoying and using everything I own.

I totally relate to the hesitation of the “maybe pile”. I started to put items in closed boxes and if I didn’t reach for it in whatever timeframe I set, I WOULD NOT open the box and donate it unopened.

Great job with that declutter pile! Someone is going to have the perfect spot in their house for those Easter items. Someone is going to love those dolls. You kept the items that have great value to you. I think you made great decisions. Pat yourself on the back! I recently went through some jewelry I had been keeping and decluttered the items I no longer cared about keeping. Now I'm able to have all my jewelry together, the more recent things with the older sentimental items. I decluttered some more things in my bedroom dresser and for the first time ever I have one completely empty drawer. Two drawers left to declutter! Onward we go! Have a fantastic weekend! 😊🐦

I really appreciate you slowing the process down and showing the gruelling process of decluttering. I appreciate you showing how much thinking and emotion goes into deciding what to keep and what to move on. I agree somethings are so hard to let go of. In that case maybe just put it back for the next cull.
If its still there after three passes make yourself use it. Then see how you feel.

I realised that I had been doing things backwards. I would buy something that I thought was pretty and then try to find a place for it at home. Which resulted in me just moving it around the house from place to place. So now I let my house tell me what it needs. For example “I need a mirror for the bathroom”Then I go out and look specifically for that item. Then come home and put it up. I still struggle with not shopping for entertainment. It’s easier to keep my house decluttered by not bringing the item home in the first place. As well as learning to live with the idea that I don’t need to have every pretty thing I see. I can appreciate it in the store but then leave it there because it doesn’t work for the home I want to create.

Honestly, I don't remember most of the stuff I let go, unless I took a picture, but then I don't go through my photos...LOL. @bethstratton3391 5 місяців тому +1

Danni, well done on pushing forward and dealing with/decluttering the difficult maybe items pile. You did really well only keeping two small bins worth of items. With regards to the favourite cup you broke (the one for which you still have the saucer), why not search the chinaware replacement services on the internet to see if you can find a replacement cup. If you can’t find one, then just use the saucer as part of your spring decor and place either a decorative pillar candle on and put it in your entryway, or place your faux orchid plant on it (if it fits) and place it in your bathroom.
My rule regards items is that if something doesn’t have an immediate place in my home in which to place the item straightaway, then it has to go. I have a set space for stored sentimental items which is deliberately kept very small, and I have allowed a bit of extra free space for future items that I feel might become sentimental later. This is my boundary and nothing can be allowed to exceed this designated space. With regards to clothing I never keep maybe clothing because in my experience it always ends up being decluttered later when the clothing maybe bin is revisited. So now I don’t even have a clothing maybe bin. If you’re not wearing something get rid of it straightaway, unless it is something you keep and only wear as a special occasion outfit. I don’t keep sentimental clothing now at all, apart from three jackets, a waistcoat and a 3/4 length winter coat my mum made and hand embroidered for me.

  • @labradorite8256

Ok im back for the plate. When you held it up i thought its so pretty, just keep it! The issue is you know how much you loved the cup, but to me its only the plate. If you saw that plate on its own in the thrift store would you buy it, because its so dang pretty?
Give yourself time to grieve the cup and reorient the plate's purpose. Its not a plate to hold the cup anymore, its for something else now. I like the jewellery catch all idea. I think id its sitting on the shelf youll be reminded if the cup being missing too much. But if it has another use, you can enjoy it. If it breaks too, no big deal, it had a useful life.
I think thats how we honor these objects, give them a useful life.

I feel like-with regards to your sentimental items-you could perhaps benefit from a “Stuff Photo Album” as it doesn’t seem like simply keeping phone pics will do it for you. You could take pictures or draw images of some items and keep them in a photo album in or scrap book, write about your memory involving the item, and then donate all the things. Would be a great way to show appreciation for the items to let go of decluttering guilt.

When decorating for seasons or holidays. I will put away my everyday decor items to make room for the special seasonal items. Once the holiday is over, my everyday items come back out. If I try to make room for all my decor at once, the surfaces become overwhelmed quickly. If you really love a piece of seasonal decor, try swapping it out with those pieces. For things like the plate, I take a picture and then write out all the memories of why it’s sentimental- you can put it into a special box pr photo album etc… and get rid of the physical plate.

It’s ok to keep the orchid 💗 my grandma just passed also and we’re about to go through her jewelry in July when I visit my family… I am excited because it’s something tangible and a memory to hold on to. My other thing that’s my favorite from her is a handmade quilt that hangs on a blanket ladder and no one is allowed to use 😂❤❤❤🙅‍♀️

Here's my opinion, not that you asked. Just from my own personal experience. If I've held onto something for years and haven't used it or displayed it, I'll either 1)declutter immediately or 2)put it in a box with a specific date (post-it note). When that date comes and I haven't taken anything out...do NOT open the box and donate it immediately. It's a done deal. No more going through it, no more going through the emotions, no more using up space for something that HONESTLY shows you it wasn't important enough to use/display. Stop the insanity. 😊❤

I always want your opinion! This is the BEST advice ever! I absolutely LOVE the idea of placing things in a box, set a date and if it hasnt been used/opened, no opening the box it just goes! That is brilliant. Takes the hassle and emotion out of second guessing and going through all of the emotions. My only issue is, I forget everything, seriously I have the worst memory ever and I would see the box and want to open it like a present 🤣🤣but seriously I love this! Stoptheinsanity! 1000% Always so HAPPY to see you here with me friend. Thank you 🥰🥰

The plate- you can get wall hanging kits to place it on the kitchen wall and have it remind you of gma everytime you"re in the kitchen or wherever you place it. My mom has a corner curio cabinet that she put all her small collectibles in, it worked for her. I have it now, she no longer needed it but I have nothing in there ...except my dad's ashes and some nice dishes. Point is maybe you just need a cabinet for all the sentimental stuff to be on display and out of the way and off your mind.

As you said, decluttering doesn't need to be perfect, there will always be items to which the rules don't apply. Give yourself some grace and keep the plate if it makes you happy. It's your choice how you relieve the pressure around the keep-toss decision. Either you decide to declutter it or you radically accept keeping it. That won't necessarily mean forever, either. You can decide differently any moment. Allow yourself to decide autonomously from any subconscious beliefs. Put it up to display and cherish if you like to look at it. And maybe someday you will want to let it go or never. Both is fine. But until then you've removed the pressure of taking a decision on it again and again and beating yourself up about the number of years and how you're not able to let it go.

This was such a relatable episode! 😩 As I watched you struggle with the plate and the orchid, it occurred to me that I can save a few sentimental items that I can't part with and create a small display for each person (with a small photo). My spouse cut a nook in the wall above my desk and I keep photos of deceased relatives (I celebrate Dia de los Muertos, too) and I'm wondering if you can find a space to place your grandmother's things where you can see them and remember her. Just a thought ✌💛

Could you use the saucer as decor and hang it on the wall? It is very pretty.

  • @Mama_Amma
    @Mama_Amma 5 місяців тому

The stuff on the tea cup and saucer looked like "museum putty" to me. Someone recommended it to me a few years ago. If you put it under things like vases, they probably won't fall over if you bump them, but if you pull on them really slowly you can still move them. The faster you try to move it the more it sticks but if you pull slowly it comes off. It helps keep cats from throwing your things off of shelves, or to stop things from slowly "walking" off of a shelf in a high traffic area that has a lot of vibration. It is also great for things like if your silverware divider is a little to small for your drawer and moves every time you shut it. Depending on the brand, you can also sometimes use it to stick cheep posters that you are not worried about getting ruined on walls that you don't want to or can't put tacks in. The poster might not survive getting pulled down, but usually the wall will do okay. It is like duct tape's gentler cousin. If duct tape can't fix it, museum putty probably can.

This idea just occurred to me: I think our kids will be more interested in the stories behind the sentimental objects rather than the objects themselves. You can take pictures of certain objects and write down the stories/memories of why the objects have meaning to you. Then donate the objects and create a photo journal for the pictures and stories to go in for your kids. This frees them from keeping old things but lets them learn about the people behind the objects. That would let them know those people a little bit more than just a regular photo album.

Get a plate hangar and hang it where you'll get occasional joy from it because it's so pretty! Let your cell phone's search engine figure out; maybe someone is selling the mug online.

Danni i have to admit that i too hang onto clothes too long. We only wear 10-20% regularly, but i think "what if these wear out and i can't find anything else i like"? So i store them til they're musty and then get rid of them.
You talking about hanging onto valuable things has made me realise where this comes from. There was a time as a teenager where i suddenly grew out of all my clothes but i didnt get any new ones until they were embarrassingly small. I went around with a jumper tied around my waist to hide it until finally my mother noticed about 6 months later!
Danni i think you and i and maybe others here have to trust that WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE ENOUGH. Them we can make appropriate decisions about these categories we get stuck on.

"Maybe stuff". Oh, you're coming for ME now. We grew up to never get rid of something "good", because you might need it and then you'll have it. Keeping it saves money. It's so hard coming to terms that we don't have to be the keepers of the stuff. We don't have to be the stuff's parent or museum and take care of it.
    Those nails!!! Love them!!!
The plate has the maker/pattern on the back. You should be able to find a replacement cup with that information! If I could have zoomed in, I would search it for you.
How my brain works. On the black oval sign, "I wonder if it's magnetic. You could put magnetic hooks on it and it could hold necklaces." I am of NO help.
The cup and saucer were stuck together to be safer on display. If she stacked them, they were studier. They don't rattle when on display like that.
Oh, thank heavens the binoculars ended up in the keep tub. I was sweating those the whole video!

I remember the first time you brought out that orchid you were going to give your grandma. You even admitted it doesn't go with your decor. Question: Even though it reminds you of your grandmother, do you want to hold on to something that she never got and reminds you of her passing? ❤

I have to start doing that more! And I asked myself that same question, It is such a reminder of me not giving her that item and more than anything it makes me sad. Plus it is definitely not my personal style, I really do think its time to part with that item. I'll take a pic and let it go in fact Im gonna do that in the next video. Its time!

Gaby I couldnt agree with you more! I love this comment! One of the best parts of being more minimal and being on this declutter journey, its made my home so much more manageable, its so nice to be able to find things easier because everything (well most things lol) has a permanent home. Its wonderful. I do however have a very difficult time trying to force items to fit somewhere in my home, I think if Im having to move things around over & over, its just not an item I really want. And I totally get where you're coming from with memorabilia and sentimental items, the tools your father used is special, its sentimental and I relate to that so much! Those types of items are hands down my hardest items to go through. Some stuff I know its time to part with & other stuff it just brings me joy so I keep it. You are so sweet & i appreciate ya so much! Thank you for being here with me friend. 🥰

You have the same feelings and thoughts as I do. When I look at things I have. It's not any money value in them. Only sentimental value. I do not have anything expensive at all. My wedding ring set didn't even cost much. I do not want expensive stuff. What I have that was my parents. None of it holds money value. Thank you for your video. I took alot of what you said.
