I just replaced Aquila Nylguts on my Ohana solid Koa concert with Worth Browns, and the difference is staggering! Every youtube video showed the Browns coming across so much richer with more resonance and sustain. In person, it was even more amazing than the video! You can feel and hear the note ringing and resonating like nothing else! Yes, the Worth’s are fiddly to install when you cut them in half, but I still tied off and had about 3-4 windings left at the top pegs. IMO Nylguts make a laminated uke sound good, but make a solid wood uke sound cheap. Aquilas have this plasticky plinky sound when first struck. The Worth Browns are so rich, it’s all I want on all my solid ukes and might try them on some of my better laminates. Something about whatever they added to make the strings brown make them so much richer in sound than the clears. They are also the slickest strings I have ever felt and sliding chords are now effortless! That said, I do like D’Addario Flourocarbons becuase they are a light gage and easier for my wife to play, because she is just starting out.
I thought the original strings sounded pretty good to my surprise. The Martin's sounded great and they seem to have a more mellow tone in my opinion. The Worth's sounds so bright! They all have different characters. It's hard to pick a favorite. Thanks for the comparison
I found this so interesting that I think I will change my husband's strings a do a comparison on his ukulele with other strings. Glad you enjoyed the comparison, Dora.
I think I liked the sound of the Worth best, followed closely by the Martins, and the originals the least. But after listening about the length issue I would go with the Martin. Great video. Very informative.
I was so disappointed with the issues of length. The strings cost $12 plus shipping and that makes a single set pretty pricey, particularly for how fast I go through strings. Make sure you fill out the entry form in the description box below this video on UA-cam for another entry in the giveaway.
I did like the Worths. I was so disappointed on how they wore on the ukulele that I do most of my playing on. Thanks for commenting. 2 additional entries in the giveaway for you.
I will have to try a set of the Aquila Reds. I have a low G Aquila Red on my dreadful Kala electric acoustic and it makes that instrument more tolerable.
I also think the Worth sounded clean and bright in the high ranges and the Martin's more mellow in the lower range so matter of preference. Very hard to pick up a significant difference for strumming and chucking but I am pretty deaf so I am using hearing aids. Personally I prefer flurocarbon strings over nylon and nylgut mainly for feel but I also like the bright sound. I use Living Waters soprano strings
Great comparison, thanks. I have not tried Martins - those sound nice. My sons and I are currently using Worth clears, Worth browns , Living Water strings and also Orcas Black Fluorocarbon. I really think all ukes have a different voice and some seem to prefer different strings.
I agree, certain ukuleles sound better with a string that helps pick up the resonance of the wood and the construction. Have you encountered problems with the length when you buy Worth strings? Make sure you fill out the entry form in the description box below this video on UA-cam for another entry in the giveaway.
Hi ;) Yes - they come in 2 lengths - either 46" or 63" - and you can cut them in half and make 2 sets, which is convenient. The shorter set I use for sopranos and smaller concerts, the long set for tenor or big sized concerts.
I think the Worth strings were too much treble. I tried a set once and took them off shortly after. I liked the richer tone of the Martins in your video. I appreciated your tip on determining whether strings need changing. If a note is sharp as you go up the neck.
Original strings, look and sound like Aquila super nylagut. The most full range sound of the three and possibly the best all-around String. The Martin premiums are made by Aquila and are a variation of the nylgut formula in a lighter gauge. The worth sounded good.
I liked the origanal and the Martin the best. Probably I would pick the Martin if I were buying new strings I would get Martin. Oh and I had headphones on as I listened to this review.

I know a ton of folks that can't do an E chord. You are in excellent company. I am currently using Aquila Reds and New Nylgut strings. Have you tried any of my tutorials. I include practice sessions in mine. The last one I just put out was "It's a Heartache" which goes over chord transitions in and out of Em and talks about "cheating" for smooth chord transitions which you can use to get in and out of just about any chord that uses 3 or 4 fingers.
Worth and Brown sound like ear candy and oddly similar to donner strings. The martins sound too dark and muddy for my taste. The original strings were bland. Thanks for this string curious comparison.
I think the Worth strings sounded the best. It wasn't clear to me which strings only lasted 19 days. I assume it was the Worths, because you changed to Martins. I recently changed to PHD low G at Rich Davis' recommendation. I really like the sound and they have a soft feel, BUT... they stretch like crazy and don't want to stay in tune. My instrument was nearly unplayable for almost a week. I'll experiment with something new for my next set.
The Worth strings strings didn't last at all. I need to do some more experimenting. I have a soprano uke for a giveaway. Maybe I should experiment on that?
I have been a fan of the Martins for quite awhile. I haven't used them much recently after I hosted a workshop for students on changing strings - bought a bunch of Martins and EVERY stinkin' one of the packages had the C and E strings mislabeled. No customer service response from Martin.
I put Martin on my vintage mahogany soprano, they seemed perfectly suited to what I wanted from that instrument. I've been exploring other FC options for my concert and tenor instruments.

1st Martin 2nd Worth and 3rd Original. De gustibus non disputandum est
That's my call too!
Think I liked the Martin best.
Me too - particularly after the Worth strings pooped out so quickily.
You put one canine and one male human to sleep on your side of the video. Goodness.
Peaceful.
Worth and Brown sound like ear candy and oddly similar to donner strings. The martins sound too dark and muddy for my taste. The original strings were bland. Thanks for this string curious comparison.
Well said!
I didn't care for the worth at all on this instrument, I prefer the Martin to the originals
