Ashcroft simply sublime . Always relevant, not concerned with trampling the celebrity circuit; he quietly works away with understated brilliance. From the firat time I heard "History" by 'The Verve' through his "Urban Hymns'' and "Forth" with aforementioned band; to his early solo work 'Song for the lovers,' he's always innovative, vacillating between the hauntingly beautiful melancholic nihilistic 90s era; Songs as relevant today as ever and still sounding fresh.... Through to a different place now but never reluctant (as some of his contemporaties are!) to play the earlier music..Ashcroft is one of a tiny number of greats from the era that we still see blaze as brightly today. Doherty, Alex Turner (albeit both a bit younge,r arriving a little later) Noel Gallagher.....but for me,; Ashcroft is arguably the finest lyricist and vocalist of his (and my ) generation. A cogemt tour de force referencing matters the average nobody like me and many can identify with; The seminal voice for us all. 👌 Destined to be appreciated as one of the true greats across any genre and era. Oh! and probably the coolest dude on the planet (along with Mr. Paul Weller.) Thanks Richard; you've made my mundane, unremarkable, 42 years in the world better by simply existing. .The soundtrack to my teens through now to early middle age:.The soundtrack of my life.,🎵🎸.
He never lets you down in music
One of the best tracks on the album.
That swelling sound of violins in the background of the chorus brought tears to my eyes. What a tune! Definitely highlight of the album.

He used lyrics from sweet and sour for this song, didn’t he? Thought it sounded familiar first time I heard this track.
@@victorescalona7760 He actually demo’d Bird’s Fly in 1996 (search for “verve - don’t you want me”) and then he reused some the lyrics for Sweet and Sour which was recorded in 1997. So they originate from this song first

Love Richard Ashcroft. A lot say his songs are 'just' depressing but that is not the case at all. Think of bittersweet symphony, he sings about both sides of life, the good and bad. Therefore singing about how life really is, not sugarcoated crap.
