Because it corrects your pitches when you don't hit the notes, so if someone hits the wrong note, you hear their note as well as the slide to the corrected note... In reality, it does not work well enough to say he cannot sing live. Look at the AOL sessions, and even unplugged sessions without microphones.(Which is where the auto-tune feature is placed for live acts...)
