Learned long ago it is best to stick with OEM parts/fluids for Honda and Toyotas. If you have substantial miles now is a good time to change out top and bottom hoses. 360,000 miles on my 2008 Civic, drive it 100 miles a day commuting. Oil and filter changes every 5k, drain and refill auto transmission every 10k. Tires, brakes, batteries and a starter, great little car.

I’ve replaced my blower motor, engine air filter, and now my thermostat thanks to helpful people like you giving us these gems. This was my first repair that I’ve done under the hood. I was intimidated at first but once I got going I found the confidence to continue. Thank you for saving me money and keeping me educated on my car. I love my civic! These cars are so reliable and relatively inexpensive and easy to repair when issues crop up. I’m a Honda owner for life. Only ever driven Honda’s and they’ve never failed me. 💁🏽♀️💙
What if the hose to the reservoir is broken off from the radiator cap as well as a bad thermostat? Or could it just be the crack in the radiator cap that runs to the reservoir being the problem?
Seems in that case, you’d need to buy those replacement parts in addition to a thermostat and coolant. For what it’s worth, the coolant used in this video is technically wrong. Meaning, this Honda is supposed to have coolant specific to “Asian” cars. Asian car coolant is blue, not green. That may or may not make much difference in the real world, but it’s worth noting.

@@BrianBalatbat its been about a week now. And the temperature has stayed consistently in the middle of the temp gauge. Things I did differently was -I lifted the left and right front of the car to aid in the burping - I didn't re-use my coolant, I poured new coolant. I called local shops and got a quote for around $160-$200. The DYI cost me about $50. $20 for the thermostat and $30 for the two jugs of coolant.
Thanks for the vid, my 06 Civic is almost over heating these past few days, normally its 9 bars during normal operating temperature range, but its getting around 15-17 bars from the temp indication so its more than 3/4 of the temp arc, I think the thermostat is not opening, after 15 mins of driving the temp starting to rise from 9 bars to 17 bars.
I have same problem, just changed coolant temp switch and flushed it nothing happened, my 06 goes to hot but the line on gage does not go 1/17 just half the inside gauge moves to top H, then in 30 min can all go back to regular in middle? Very confused.
I will try pull out the thermostat to check wether its working or not, just bring it to a boil on a caserole and check if the valve will open before the water starts to boil, some thermostat have different specifications on when they will open when it reaches the desired temp. Not all are the same

Oh man, that is absolutely the wrong coolant to be using. That is the old school IAT green coolant with silicates, they will destroy your water pump in no time. You need to flush this ASAP and instead use the universal EXTENDED LIFE coolant (the one that says "all makes all models" on the bottle).
Very helpful but should be more safe to buy an original Thermostat from Honda. Save money with Amazon can become very expensive if that thermostat locks on close position and overheat the engine. I will replace mine this week, I believe the last owner removed it and now the engine doesn't warm enough and my heat doesn't work property.

I cant believe you cheaped out and just got some asian car BS from autozone. Smh AND you even put a knock off version thermostat in, lol those were not the same . Make sure to remove all air from the cooling system (burping), check if your cooling fan is working.

It had the code p0128, thermostat not functioning properly. Fixed the code after replacing thermostat.
