Sailing 50 miles Out of Our Way For Fresh Water | Sailing Cuba | S03E45

  • After sailing a week along the Southern Coast of Cuba, we start to run low on water. Because Cuban maritime law prohibits sailors from entering most coastal towns, we are forced to sail 50 miles out of our way to fill up our water tanks at a small government run marina way out it the middle of nowhere. So we hoist the spinnaker and sail south in search of water.

    Listening to Jordan talk about wind speed, direction or lack thereof as it relates to local land mass reminded me of my earliest days of sailing, crewing and captaining a racing sailboat at 12 years old. My dad joined an "inland lakeside boat club" with a fleet of Snipes hooked on mooring blocks out front of the club. The deal was, every Saturday morning my job was to bring the commodores snipe to shore and clean it from top to bottom and rub her bottom with emery cloth to remove the green growth and make her "new slick". After which I crewed for the Commodore, he wasn't the best racer but a very good teacher and on Sunday the deal was he would crew for me and never tell me what to do. Sunday was the "Junior" Racers time at the helm. The lake was about 3 miles east to west and about 1-1/2 miles at it's widest point. The wind seemed to come from the top of every tree and every break in the continuity of the land. That year I started crewing during Race-week in Marblehead, MA where my folks had a cottage near the ocean on Salem, Harbor. I quickly found that the regular lake sailors racing were much better at reading the "near shore" wind patterns than almost all of the regular "open ocean" sailors. Great learning experience.

    I recommend keeping bleach or water purification tablets on hand. A few drops (Google for the exact amount) into the jugs, slosh it around, slosh some through the cap to clean it, wait a bit, and you should have microbe-free if chlorine-tasting water. If you use water purification tablets some come with tablets that remove the iodine taste after purification. Another option is a UV Steripen. It would require you do small amounts at a time, which is a pain, but it beats being sick. Note: Bleach can lose strength after a few months and needs replacement.

    We call it the “tired, hungry, cranky rule” - you’re both smart to set limits - Cuba, for a Caribbean sail, is too stressful - we prefer locations where people like living there and are not trying to escape. Hope you get some rest and great food somewhere with no red X’s - be safe and keep the awesome content coming! 😎👍🍺🌈

    I wish I would’ve come across this channel earlier. My family and I live in Sarasota, work in Longboat Key, and guess where my family is from, Isla de la Juventud, or as it was known before, Isla de Pinos. Very few sailors make it their, and it was beautiful seeing my fellow Americans visiting where my brother and parents were born and came from. If you would’ve been there in May, maybe we would’ve met, small world! This is awesome, you guys are the best!

    If you get water you’re not sure of, fill your tanks and add an appropriate amount of chlorine bleach to the tank, then flush the pipes before drinking. Also recommend having a sawyer personal system. I’ve made a gravity filter with a inline carbon filter. The sawyer could easily handle 5 gal at a time.

    Water filtration is very important. That filter you guys use I have mounted after my pump for the whole house water system. It works really well there - though they say 250g limit I use it for about 1000g. It's Tank - Jabsco Sediment filter - Pump - 10micron filter - faucets.
    However it's good to know that Hydrogen Peroxide you have on board, 5ml to a gallon is the supposed magic number, can kill bacteria too and it removes chlorine taste. So that tiny amount is sorta easy to fudge... But keep in mind drinking peroxide will make you throw up instantly (probably a good thing it dilutes quickly and it's half life is short). So a tiny amount and let it sit for hours. Between that and the bleach in the tanks it's a wonder I'm not entirely Blonde yet (with the onboard showers...) :>)
    Sailing is one of those things where you go from work that pays you, to work you pay to do. I however don't think the sunset on my tie ever looked that good!

  • @EdmundRobinson
    @EdmundRobinson 5 років тому

    You guys should look into getting a portable pressure pump. They are 12V pumps that usually connect to your car's cigarette lighter. This would enable you to get weak water pressure up so that you can use your filter.

  • @karlfair
    @karlfair 5 років тому

    For water safety, chlorine is your friend. 1/8 teaspoon per gallon. If you filled your tanks with untreated water, use chlorine. A Sawyer filter costs about 20 dollars US. It will filter up to 100,000 gallons of fresh water. For about 15 US dollars, you could make an adapter to gravity feed your Jerry jugs though the filter and into your tanks. The filter won't be fast. But it will supply safe water.
    If you are looking for a water maker. We had an Alberg 35, installed a power survivor 35. 4 amps per gallon and it worked so well, we could take showers.

    I've been telling people about a report I had heard about the diving and the beautiful reefs and I think I see why. Its very hard to visit Cuba on a cruiser from what I'm seeing. The fishing fleet is probably in bad shape and the main thing that is probably happening is almost all vessels are kept from enjoying the undersea life. HEY, I love the way your getting into sailing moves like "Jibe Time". Perfect. Apparently the technique is to get the bloomer down, Jibe, and put it back up again. Nice. First boat to show this believe it or not ! That includes La Vagabond, All of the Delos series, and many others !

I'm glad you're being honest about it but maybe if you start the day with "let's get through the struggles of sailing and see what wonderful moments and adventures it brings us" instead of "today is going to be perfect" and getting disappointed. Maybe you will need less patience with each other at the end of the day. Happy cruising!

    filling your tank with unknown drinking water is not only an inconvenience but dangerous, surely some kind of rainwater catching device could be set-up and the water would be without risk. A water maker if you could find room and the cost is a good idea too. Good water is essential for cruising.

    Couple of suggestions
    Never shake anything over the side, use a bucket... If you want to keep it.
    Double line your Spinnaker , don't loose end it side to side, cinch one, loose the other, or a gust and a line snag and you're gone . Unless you need man overboard drills.

Unfortunate is the way it is as humans. In any case as for the water, next time you can, get purification tablets and hand held drinking filtered glasses. I used them both during hurricanes Maria and Irma in Puerto Rico and saved the day. Great passage there. Fair winds and stay safe.

    Respectfully, when you can, you can add a small watermaker to solve the water issue. Go manual though....and a good solar/batter set up could almost eliminate the need for a diesel. Either for your Engine or generator....once you power up the generator can function only as a back up really.

    When you are receiving critical information via radio communication (e.g. the depth of the water from the port officer) you need to repeat the communication that you received from the sender in order to confirm that the message received was heard/interpreted correctly, and so that any other person listening on the side can double check the accuracy of the message (e.g. sender: "water has depth of 1.6m"; receiver: "water has depth of 1.6m"). All that only takes a second or so, so in the interests of safety you should do it as a matter of habit.

    Question why don’t you get a water maker for your boat since you’re on it so much? Or if unable to afford it is it possible to fit a bigger water tank on your sailboat?

      And cost 4,000.00 and take up the entire port side of atticus and last just a few years. Not really a great idea

      @@crimsonpride48 i did and you must have missed the membrain. Its sbout the size of a golf club bag then theres the honda generator u need . Hey its great if you got space and want portability but atticus has to go outside to change there mind. There boat is cool but storage is very preciouse on that boat.

      @sailingsolo5290 5 років тому

      @@crimsonpride48 everyone forgets how much a water maker costs. Rain man is cheap at 4,000.00 compared to the real deal a about 10,000. Then you need storage tanks for the water. Thats a huge expense to build stainless ones that fit youre available space. 2,000.00. Cause that plactic westbmarine model aint going to fit anywhere. Even the collapsable type .
      Water makers are for the wealthy . Us regular folk need to do it the old fashion way.
      I have space for one but my pricing was 15,000.00 to get a quality unit permanent installation. Wich is the only real solution for making water underway.

    Ryobi makes a cordless transfer pump that would give you enough pressure to get through you water filter.

    When the wind died down, should you go take the main down again and put the spinnaker back up? How does this work?

    I know it's been 4 years, but a battery powered pump might be a good idea. Ryobi makes one that would be pretty good.

    Could you suspend your water jugs from the mast to make enough pressure to push the water through the filter and into your vessel tank?

    Restricted ports? I think a flotilla of sailboats could change their minds. Worked for Admiral Perry and his Black Fleet in Japan.

    Another great video with a lot of learning and fun. One question, instead of taking off for the long journey when tired, why not stay one more day and rest up?? Thanks in advance (I do understand you seen a great weather window)

    Get yourselves a dehumidifier and just run it any time you have excess power.

    Ruff water sailor to 70 mph plus. Always go in with a tide coming in and start as low as possible. Then time will get you un grounded. Mark your anchor to a foot deeper than draft. Keep someone on the front to feel if you touch ground and proceed very slow. Have reverse ready. "Water" they sell on the cheep tabs that can check it for you. Always stay on the most up wind side to if going through a narrow channel. That wind in a grounding can become a tool. My best accidental grounding, 5 foot draft, in just at three feet of water, This was in a 40 to 50 mph wind. Tide was going out that day, so I had very little time to work. I started the engine, brought up the main and then the jib. "Doing this with a boat on it's side mind you" Put the engine in reverse, at this time water was about rippling over the the side. Powered the engine up some in reverse and brought the main up and then the jib. about, Then brought them around slowly. The wind laid that boat on its side even more and that moved that boat sideways all the way back into deep water by raising the keel. Angling it actually. You can also use a large industrial heavy bag or a 50 gallon plastic drum if you have the room for that, Rope it off good and dump it in the water, Let it fill. Then use the rope from the main sail and crank it up and lay that boat on it's side and motor off. This could give you two to three feet of less draft. Or, you can simply do nothing.
