  • FUJI X10 Camera Review. Is this the best value compact camera? For me it has to be the best second hand point and press camera out there. It’s definitely the best small camera with a great lens. It’s hard to find a compact camera with full manual control as a option.
    For me it’s the the ultimate photographers compact camera. Definitely the best small camera for vacation.
    I’ve added sample images at the end of the video to show just how good the 28-112mm lens is.

    Found myself LOL. Thank you. I've been looking for something less than my A7c and more than my older Lumix Lx7, as well as something my daughter might use as she takes her first steps into the photography world. This review makes one realise how much charm and fun - and snap! - are missing from so many other tech talk reviews. Bravo, I say. Bravo!

    I’ve had a Fuji X10 since, I think, 2012 and I have to admit it was its looks that attracted me. I wanted a compact camera as I was having issues lugging my DSLR kit around, but I wanted something that had a retro kind of vibe and offered everything my DSLR provided. Due to a chronic illness I stopped all photography around 2015 and my gear has been mothballed ever since. However thanks to the AI mind reading bots of UA-cam your video has just appeared in my suggestions and I’m now inspired to charge a battery (if they’ll still charge) and take the X10 for a spin again, even if it’s just around my garden in an attempt to paparazzi my unsociable cat. 👍👍👍

      Thank you for your kind comments. It’s great to know that you enjoyed the video and I sincerely hope that you charge up your X10 and enjoy taking some photos. Photography is such a great thing, and I’m sure your cat is excited about its new modelling career too! Please accept my best wishes for a speedy recovery and I hope that photography can help you go from strength to strength. 📷👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      I had mine since 2012, that means 8 years now in 2020, still my main camera. Still in active duty. The rubber grib at the back gone missing. The external flash port at the top almost gone but I use those resin glue and thankfully it's still there and still working, this is my fault becoz I love to use the heavy manual external flash and was clumsy in handling it. I have the lens adapter and I can attached various lens filters like the Raynox Macro lens. It's not the greatest but so far served my needs very well. I guess with the current conditions, my camera worth peanuts (if there is still financial value in it) in the 2nd hand market. I won't bother to buy new camera as long as my X10 still alive. Will use it till it die. This X10 is quite a Panzer Tank actually.

    I've used my Fuji x10 for nine years as my only camera. It's not perfect, but it is great for so many uses. Fantastic super macro, fantastic fill in flash, manual zoom, high speed flash sync with leaf shutter, up to 1,000 th sec at full aperture, or 4,000 the second at smaller aperture, etc. BUT, just yesterday I was fiddling with the focus control switch on the front of the camera, and it's now stuck in MANUAL FOCUS!!! I could cry. I've checked on the internet, and it's happened to quite a lot of people. SO care folk, if you're thinking of changing focus modes. It has a 2/3 inch sensor, now considered TOO small. But the bright lens and image stabilisation means you never need high ISOs. There's even a faux bokeh effect for portraits that isn't too bad, and wide open at F2.8 at 112 mm, you can get a mild but pleasing bokeh then in any case. I can still use the camera in EXR mode, but if you try to keep the 12 megapixel size, it will overexpose at times. Put up with better 6 megapixel files at time, and just take care in composition so you don't need to crop too much. Or I can press the AEL button before taking the picture, and just put up with the annoyance of pressing two buttons for every pic and of the manual exposure distance scale on the LCD. It's really annoying, but I'll cope until I can fine a reasonable replacement. I might look to buying its last successor, the X30 if I can find a reasonable example. It has a good OLED eye level viewfinder dispensing with the characterful but slightly poky lens viewfinder. In regard to smart phone, 1) they don't have viewfinders, fundamental for the way I take photos, 2) they don't have a proper flash. The flash on the X10 (and the Fuji x100) is amazing for fill in bright light for people pics, due to leaf shutter you can easily balance natural bright light and use the flash to lighten the shadows and put a highlight in the eyes, and I use this flash almost all the time with people photos. . Smart phones cannot do this.

      @@rileyphotos Since this posting, I have indeed managed to get a very nice x30 in great condition here is little old NZ for $300 - I'm really enjoying the electronic viewfinder and the bigger, moveable LCD screen. Also I the camera seems quicker and its photos just a bit better. There's still a place for this small sensor but very capable camera in among all the modern megapixels. I hope it lasts a long time, its old time looks suit this old time photographer. Cheers.

    Thank you for this video. I'm getting my X10 out of the closet and giving it a go. I bought mine new (!) in 2012 for a trip to Italy because I didn't want to take my then-Nikon D200, and knew the X10 would do nicely inside museums and churches. It was outstanding (all JPGs). Great metering system, too. Also, a few years ago I "smuggled" my X10 into a charity event that was a private concert in a hotel ballroom. I knew bringing my current Nikon would attract attention and may be prohibited, and I did not want to use a phone. Knowing that everyone would be using their phones, I knew I could use the X10's LCD and fit right in. The lens range (and fast aperture) were perfect. I shot RAW and used exposure comp due to the erratic stage lighting. Pictures were great.
    Last, the X10 is built like a Leica. And the external controls with clicks are nice. Thanks again. I'm keeping mine.

    About two years ago I opted for an X30 on account of it's EVF, and have never understood why it was something of a failure following it's release just because some reviewers criticised it for having an ageing sensor with only 12 megapixels.
    I am more than happy with the results it produces.

Now it works perfectly and is in great condition. A great buy for EUR90. Complements my X30 and X100T. Looks better than the others, is smaller than the others, so easy to take everywhere. This was welcome fresh air when I'd just viewed an X10 review by a photographer purporting to like the camera, then consistently damning almost every single feature, and seemingly blaming the X10 for not being "new". Madness! I got mine when it was still pretty new, and have liked it very much in the intervening decade. Construction is wonderful, and versatility, for its size and intended use, second-to-none. Your photos give excellent homage to this design, by the way. Well done.

    Got it last week in mint condition for 75 euro. Realy fun camera to use. The IQ in 6 megapixel mode (m size) is actually good. It is not entirely up to par with my xt3 but most certaintly pleasant. I find the ois also quite good. Gives me about 2 - 3 stops advantage on the wide end which gives some decent indoor performance. And I have yet to use it with a speedlight to sync at 1/4000. Ow boy that will be gold 👍

    I just purchased one of these cameras a few weeks ago for the same reason. I looked at the X100 and other versions, but what cinched the X10 for me is the variable zoom lens vs the fixed primes of all the other versions. The wide zoom range combined with the f/2-f/2.8 aperture range makes it the perfect EDC camera IMO. Plus, it does look great. Its doesn't break any speed records for focus speed and the viewfinder is somewhat worthless (use the back screen instead)- but even with that, its such a fun camera and the images are great. Virtually any camera will make great images if the light is right and the subject matter is compelling and well composed. Those are the two most important factors anyway- "photograph the adjective, not the noun".

    Thanks for this review! It helped me on my final decision and just bought an almost as new X10 with box, all accessories plus a spare battery for €180. Which protective filter would you recommend to put on it and does it need an adapter? Would you recommend a lens hood too? Thanks!

    • @rileyphotos
      @rileyphotos  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Marco, great to hear from you and thanks for watching. I'm glad you found the video helpful and I'm certain that you are going to love shooting with the X10. Which filter would I choose? Well I've always opted for Hoya filters myself, but as long as its a reputable brand a standard 40mm UV will do a great job in helping to protect your investment. Would I add a lens cap? No, not really, I've not found any significant flaring problems and don't use one, I like the camera to be as compact as possible for travel. If you do fancy a lens hood though, make sure you get one that has a lens cap, because the original lens cap fits snuggly over the lens and will not fit with a lens hood added, and also, if you fit a UV filter, you may find the lens hood will give some vignetting problems, and therefore require you to take the UV off to use the lens hood and screw on adapter. I haven't tested this with the X10 but it's often the case that with a wide lens, it's either the UV filter or the lend hood, but not both at the same time. Let us know how you get on with the camera, and please feel free to share our relatively new photography channel with fellow photograhers, the more the merrier! 😀📷👏

      @@rileyphotos thanks a lot for your help! Yes I will get only the 40mm uv filter to protect the lens, a screen protector for the rear LCD, a nice vintage leather strap and of course a wifi sd card! I'm excited to start shooting with the X10! Before investing a lot of money on a more advanced camera, I thought the X10 would be for me the perfect entry into a more serious photography, being a beginner who always shot just with mobile phones. It has the beautiful retro vintage rangefinder look of the Leicas and the Fuji X100s which I love, different focal lengths to experiment and play with to help me understand better the differences and which one I prefer, manual and auto settings, optical viewfinder, with a very affordable cheap price. I'm sure it will help me decide then which more advanced and more expensive camera to get once I'm ready to level up, considering also fixed lens cameras like the X100 series and the rare to find X70 (or Ricoh GR III, although I don't like much the modern look of it).

    • @rileyphotos
      @rileyphotos  3 роки тому +1

      Hi John, great to hear from you and thank you for your kind comments. I tend to fluctuate between extremes with my X10, so either Program mode or full Manual. I don’t see my X10 as a serious contender to replace a DSLR, I wouldn’t use it on a pro shoot, it’s my travel companion or street photography friend. I’m looking to capture moments, expressions, and memories, so essentially want the point and press option of decent AF and AE. Program gives this to me. I know that EXR mode divides opinion. I see it as an automated way to quickly adopt a shooting scene mode, so if it’s nighttime and I want night mode, I can look through scene options, or just flick over to EXR and know it will pick night. In essence I’m using it as a short cut! If I was doing fireworks though, I’d want more control and go over to manual. EXR is great for some, but I do like control and so it’s not something I go to often. Thanks for watching, and feel free to chip in with comments any time, we love to talk photography, 📷👏😊

      iPhones are great but when I want to be a little more serious about my photography then a dedicated camera that feels right is important to me. I love the X10 looks. Hi Graham, thank you for watching. I know it sounds like a bit of a cop out but what size prints are acceptable differs from person to person. I’d be happy to take A3 size prints but then again I’ve had pictures from my Nikon D3s 12.6mega pixel camera full size on road hoardings, 10 meters wide, and they looked great. On the other hand, some photographers get very disturbed if they can see even the slightest softening. As I said, I’d be happy with A3 or even 16x12 but let me know how you get on, it would be good to share your findings. In fact, it might be a nice follow on video, I might get some prints done to see how far we can go. Thanks you for the idea 💡. Enjoy the camera, and thanks for commenting too 📷👍🏻

      Hello Annamaria, congratulations on choosing a great camera. While you get to know it, I suggest keeping it in P mode (program), and using the EV +- thumb button to control the exposure, a great place to start, and manually flicking the flash up when you need a little fill in flash outdoors. Enjoy 👏📷😊

    It’s a very nice camera. I was asking myself, does it support live feed with a TV, while connected with an hdmi cable(I don’t have the one for this camera), or it just delivers pictures and videos, which has been taken with it, to the TV? I really need live feed on that camera, can you tell me if it’s supported?

    Good day, sir. Thank you for your videos. They are so helpful. I purchased an x10 nearly 12 years ago and recently took it out to use again. Unfortunately I dropped it a while back and the lens does not rotate fully to close. It still takes pictures just fine. Any advice on repairing it? I thought about opening it up to see if I can figure out what happened to the mechanism. Thanks again for your fantastic videos.

      Macro (flower icon) - OFF
      With the flash in forced mode, every time you click the flash button and it pops up it will fire, so it’s useful indoors and outdoors as fill in flash.

    • @rileyphotos
      @rileyphotos  2 роки тому +1

      Sorry I hear that you have the focus error on your X10. Is there a clicking noise inside the lens too? It seems to be when the motor driving the elements disengages. A couple of people have said they had managed a fix by putting the camera, lens down on a flat surface, and gently pushing down. I’d be very careful doing this but I suppose if the camera isn’t working there’s not much to lose. Other than that, it’s back to Fuji for a fix, but I’d get a quote first, it might be cheaper to pick up a second hand X10 than pay for the repair. Hope you get it fixed, and thanks for watching

      It does indeed produce a clicking noise while turning off. After a few tries this noise then dissappears, along with the focus error. • @rileyphotos
      @rileyphotos  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you for your comments. You’re absolutely right, it’s a 2/3 sensor so only 12M megapixel. The thing for me is it’s lens. Compare that to a smartphone that’s the difference. I’m not undervaluing smartphones though, they are incredible. For me a photographers ability combined with lens quality, greatly outweighs megapixel count once the camera is over about 10, unless you’re planning fifty foot prints. Of course there is also price, I’m talking about a travel camera sometimes available under £100. I’d have to add a zero onto that for the latest smartphone. I do love a smartphone image though. Who was it who said the best camera is the one you have with you, and most people always have their smartphone with them! They are great for travel photography if you only need an auto option, so you’re right to point them out to people as a good alternative. Thank you for your comments, much appreciated, maybe I should do an X10 vs smartphone video? It would be good to see the results.

      The picture quality of the latest iPhone is a revelation for its size (and it should at $1,000+). That being said, setting up an artistic shot on an iPhone is difficult and the phone is making theoretical aperture / speed / focus decisions that are best for snapshots. If your goal is lots of photos that you'll share on social media - you'd be thrilled with the photos from a smartphone. If you are an average photographer looking for the most flexibility, the best shots and your own artistic input (and style) - the X10 is a dream.
