NEVER, NEVER, NEVER INTRODUCE A HORSE TO SOMETHING NEW AND POTENTIALLY SCARY WITHIN A CLOSED/CONFINED AREA!! My neighbors had allowed my then husband (let’s call him “Mike”) to keep his horse in their pasture and barn. They didn’t have any horses, Mike’s horse kept the grass in the pasture short so they didn’t have to mow = a win-win. The neighbors had been looking for a trustworthy pony or horse for their grandchildren who they’d rescued from an abusive situation and taken in. They finally bought a pony and was having it delivered. They called Mike and asked if he’d come over to help with introducing the pony to Mike’s gelding. Mike, being the grandiose narcissist he is, of course, strutted over to the barn, attempting to reinforce to the neighbors the BS he’d been filling them with about how he “knew horses.” Mike had his horse in the breezeway between the stalls when the trailer backed into the barn. There was no way out and little room. Apparently, the grandchildren were in the barn as well, so very excited to have their very own pony. Mike had them unload the pony into the breezeway. Those poor kids. The pony had been there barely minutes when my husband’s horse panicked, backed away as far as possible until he ran into the door, then spun around, and promptly kicked the pony in fear. The pony went down immediately. Mike’s horse was going nuts. Kids were screaming and crying as the pony couldn’t get up but was also screaming in pain. The vet had to be called out urgently and he determined Mike’s horse had broken the pony’s shoulder, requiring the pony to be put down immediately. Those poor kids only had that pony for about an hour and now it was dead and they were completely heartbroken (heartbreak = something they were very used to). I found out later Mike never even offered to pay for the pony, much less the vet bill. (Add that to one more reason he’s now happily my “ex-husband.”) I was beyond horrified when my daughters told me. A couple of months later, the grandmother called. I answered the phone (back in the days of landlines). She asked if my now ex was home. No. She’s relieved. (Weird.) She asked me if it was true I’d been raised on a farm with horses. Yes. She’s clearly relieved. (Odd.) They’d found their granddaughters a 4H horse and wondered if I could help with introducing the two horses WITHOUT my husband around, and without his gelding kicking and killing their new horse. Of course I could and would. It was determined Mike would be gone the remainder of the day, so arrangements were made to have the 4-H horse delivered that afternoon. I went over to my neighbors’ house and I told her how we were going to introduce the horses and it most definitely was not going to be in the barn but out in the pasture, where both horses would have room, if panic ensued. Long story short, the horses became fast friends, my neighbor was immensely grateful for my help, her granddaughters were thrilled with their new horse, and I added the pony incident to one more reason why one day soon Mikey would happily become my Ex.
That’s a good point! Thankfully the horse trusts her but yeah I had one that was afraid of all kinds of things that she had raised around! 2 year old filly afraid of horse trailer, afraid to walk over small dry ditch, afraid of the sound of her hooves on paved bridge & afraid of her own gas sound, ended up just keeping her to raise a couple of foals, they thankfully didn’t inherit her fears, she was a sweetheart just a scaredy cat. I found a frightened horse can be very dangerous, she almost broke me in pieces.
What a terrible experience for those kids, who undoubtedly had experienced enough trauma in their short lives. Happy for them indeed that you were around to help them.
Not at all. This is a wonderful and perfectly controlled situation. Out in a field. The horse could have run itself into a tizzy which then requires cooling and there's always a safety issue with a loose right and animal. No this was handled very well. Horses just react this way until they become a custom to something new
Exactly. No living being wants to feel trapped within closed spaces with a perceived threat. A little more distance would have made it much less stressful and eased their introduction to one another.
I used to work on a farm where we had an ancient and crippled little burro we had taken in so she could keep an orphan foal company. She couldn’t hurt the flies on her back if she wanted to but all the adult horses were absolutely terrified of her. We never understood why. 🤷♀️

Mike, being the grandiose narcissist he is, of course, strutted over to the barn, attempting to reinforce to the neighbors the BS he’d been filling them with about how he “knew horses.”
Mike had his horse in the breezeway between the stalls when the trailer backed into the barn.
(Add that to one more reason he’s now happily my “ex-husband.”)
I was beyond horrified when my daughters told me.
Thanks for your life story
@Judy Manuel Here I thought you're husband would have intervened. You're already nagging me so I can imagine why he left.
Long story*
Not "long story short." There was nothing short about this.
That horse is just skittish and he's probably like that a lot. Bless his heart🥰
Wow he was really afraid of that donkey. Hopefully he's realised he is twice the size of the little donkey. 🙂
He's absolutely gorgeous. Reminds me of Secretariat. She's so good with him, sweet nervous boy!
Bro looks traumatized 😭
"THATS NOT A FRIGGIN DONKAY DATS A DEMOON"
I don't think they should have met this way. Probably out in a field instead
True ... 💯
It is kind of like finding a stranger in your home - your safety zone. I hope he earned up to the donkey
A little more distance would have made it much less stressful and eased their introduction to one another.
y’all act like you know this lady and her horses..
I used to work on a farm where we had an ancient and crippled little burro we had taken in so she could keep an orphan foal company. She couldn’t hurt the flies on her back if she wanted to but all the adult horses were absolutely terrified of her. We never understood why. 🤷♀️
Probably because no one took the time to teach them she wasnt a threat, that would have been your job if youre the owner of those animals....
Looks kinda like a big dog maybe 🤷♂️
Me when i see a spider
That is a beautiful horse.
"I want to go back in my stall!!" Wahh!!!😮😮😂😅😂😅😅😅😅!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊❤😊❤😊
