Being fussy like you, I always execute my mistakes to perfection. Like drilling the holes in the exact right place, then enlarging the wrong one. It’s an art I’m quite accomplished at as well.
You guys are awesome. Jan and I await your videos every week. Have fun with the o’ glorious sailing. We enjoy those videos as well - not just the DIY.
Just live to see Ava.....She is Sunshine and Bubbles....
I adore the TP holder part. 2 holes and a plastic do-hickey, 2 minutes of work and we had to wait for 3 episodes. Way to go, DIY fun peoples :) Keeping it interesting.
I missed seeing you in these videos, Ava. So glad you are back. Mads, you look way more smiling in the last clip than in other parts of the video, so I guess you have been understandably missing Ava 🤣.
Mads, for the toilet paper spring loaded holder, just get Ava to sow a small flat piece of fabric with a hole in it the diameter of the peg that punches through the hole you drilled, attach, even glue the fabric tab to the spring loaded end and when it’s time to change the holder, just pull on the fabric tab. It should pop out like a Meerkat! :)
Mads, you weren't quite as upset about the splash guard as you were about the "smiley police" years back. That was hilarious.
one of my very favorite channels and.. AND.. that missing bit of trim around the nav station pole is killing me.. I know your trolling me Mads!
I absolutely love watching your DIY stuff. What I appreciate is your attention to detail. The boat looks great. Please, more and more DIY! The best of luck, and stay safe.
Really love the channel and been following for years. I have a suggestion for an additional t-shirt design with glorious sanding add “man glitter”. Just made us laugh.
Aww, darn; she came back. I'm sure Mads doesn't feel that way, but if she'd stayed away another week, I'm sure he would've come up with a whole new pile of projects!
Hi Mads,
Don't be so hard on yourself. I think that a mistake I could easily have done too. The important part now is how to fix it....
You can still save that SS plate by using a washer of the right size. It's going to be behind the holding bracket, so.... invisible anyways
All the best, Carlos
When the roll is empty and you just have the core.. I don't think the narrow width will be a problem.
And …….. you even hung the TP the correct way around on its holder, great job :)
So glad to see you put the toilet paper in the Correct way - over the top!!!
Correct !!
Happy that Ava has returned. Yet, she never mentioned anything about the stove. Glad she's back for you!
You two are fun, good winds and smooth seas…
Ava, I see the clever clothespins holding your hats to the wall and fully intend to steal your idea! I've been looking for good hat-holding for years now!
Welcome home Ava! You're attitude Mads about the error with the back splash is impressive! Sorry it didn't work out but wow! Look what you accomplished. Nice job
I'm still baffled that there wasn't a way to put it up anyway. Either flip it upside down or sideways and trimmed??? Besides that. which is really not a big deal obviously, I'm extremely impressed. Been following since the very beginning and the progress is incredible!
Her attitude? She doesn't have to have an attitude about that. She's got to be happy with whatever Mads is going to make up.
@@Hotzenplotz1 Ha! No, sorry I worded that poorly! Mads had a great attitude about the goof up. I would have been so irritated if I did that.
Backsplash? What backsplash? I didn’t see anything about a backsplash. 😉
@@DonovanCYoung I thought that's what he called the stainless sheet he was trying to install. Technically it would have been a "sidesplash"
Mads, couldn't you have put the misaligned screw holes down and then re-drilled new holes? Who is going to see it as the misaligned holes would be low down. I can't tell if this would work, but it might. Just a thought.
I was thinking the same thing. It should work?
It's so good that you have taken a little time about some of the refinements. Some of that detail takes a while to prepare and source the materials. Lovely to see Ava back.
Ava’s entry 10/10
Subscribed, I leave a like every video. I am a conscientious UA-cam viewer, it is what I can afford to do.
loved the 'Drum roll please", it really can be the littlest things that make all the difference in life.
👍👍sometimes its the small things that make the big impact. Sorry for stainless boo boo. Could you flip piece over and hide said boo boo down lower behind oven? Being a stainless man for thirty years wish I could have helped, but I’m way over in south Mississippi. Good luck on the redo. Welcome back Miss Eva. Hope your trip to the states was good and let us know if it went well.
I really hope you don’t end up “stranded somewhere”, even for a few days… Thanks for a great channel!
12:00 Presumably one generally isn't removing the TP core holder without using all the TP first, so at that point, ripping the core tube for more finger room is definitely an option.
You may also want to try Cobalt tipped drills when drilling drilling through stainless stainless steel. They may just be cobalt drills.
Pro tip on drilling metal, especially SS. Don't try to just 'muscle' through it by putting constant downward pressure, even with a drill press. Use the 'pecking' technique. Push down into the location for a second, then let up for a second then down again. Using a lubricant helps but I've drill without using a lube and it still works. SS especially will work harden and if you use constant pressure, even with lube, it heats up and gets too hard and dulls the drill bit. CNC machining programs use this in a very rapid sequence with a lot of lube and coolant and can drill hundreds of holes all day long.
Great to see you both again! Also great to see how Mads was so focused on you and your comfort.
Happy wife, happy life.
Love all of your DIY tasks but wondered why you could not still use the backsplash by redrilling the hole(s) you need to enlarge and making a smaller piece to cover the hole or make a washer that fits the hole and sealing it so that it doesn’t leak any spills. That way you can still use your original backsplash without having to spend additional money for a new stainless steel backsplash which is not cheap?
Next time you're in the right kind of shop, look for a small bottle of something called cutting fluid, also known as rapid tap, or tapping fluid. Super helpful when having to drill through metal.
She's back! the days of Captain Dumkopf man-glittering his time away are hopefully over.
So pleased you loved the mattress topper! A comfy bed makes a world of difference when living aboard 👌🏼
I just knew that upgraded electrical wiring was ...
.. going to be Eva’s favorite completed task!!
Let’s hear it for silicon!
Welcome back Ava. Made. What’s with all the paper over the windows and the blue tape? Are you thinking of a light tint? Would be cool if you could have a piece that was removable, underway, kept in place in port. Maybe a thick piece of privacy film, like a computer screen. Looking great, enjoy the bbq.
Welcome back Eva. I don't think the splashback is a big issue if you can relocate the hole. ; ) Do you have room to flip the sheet over so the hole will be out of sight and try drilling again? Also, long-term, I think having a sleeve over the grill gas hose to exclude UV light will prevent deterioration. A small project for the crew perhaps. Sea ewe.
“See you!” An homage to the British television show, “The Prisoner?”
I’m at Viborg Denmark 🇩🇰 for work. Driven by Skive. Now I can clearly feel why you looked at the harbor and bought a boat and sailed off. (I’m from the Netherlands)
Welcome home Ava! 🇨🇦
Mads,
On the TP holder. Yes easier if you designed some beveled guides to allow locating the holes easier , a thick washer cut on on side and centered over the hole, epoxied to the sides might guide the holder into place if you have room.
But you will be placing it blind only with a full roll and removing will likely only happen when the roll is empty so accessing the tube shouldn't be much of an issue even if you have to tear the empty cardboard roll off. That's such a beautiful vanity and bathroom you've built, truly amazing work sir.
Ava has a certain glow, maybe it's just being back, maybe it's because we haven't seen her for awhile. Maybe it's Maybelline. Whatever, congrats to you both for making the life you have together. And the rest will go unsaid.
Good to see Ava back 🙂. You (Ava)gave me a shock when you did you entreen from the front cabin 😄
You and your partner are awesome. I don't often comment but am looking forward to watching you both cruising and enjoying all of the labor that has created Athena. So very well done.
why did you put the lock so far back ??
you could have turned the back splash upside down and still used it the hole would have been invisible
hey ho
love your videos 👍
yay Ava is back
You accomplished a monumental project, you deserve a monumental recognition. Now get out there and enjoy the fruit of your labor. Cheers
Hey Ava girly good ta see you home.. Mads you really got so very much done ...! I really love everything.. Everything is coming up roses. An looking tickety boo!! Fare winds an following sea's guy's ✌🏼💗😊❣️
i like the danish "åhhhh for fanden i helvvede da"
Well done Mads you certainly got a ‘shedful’ of tasks completed there. On the stainless backsplash - could you not have flipped the panel so your ‘error’ was at the bottom. Enjoy Brest - great run ashore.😀👍⛵️
I think he had already stuck it on.
@@tropiclife Nope 8:32 et seq.
I think it is out of sight anyways.
But Mads goes for 'perfection' 🙂
Glad to see that you install the toilet paper properly, over the top rather than under. Makes up for the oopsie of the stove back-splash, at least a little. Looking more and more like home rather than a building site which will be especially appreciated now that sailing is becoming more the focus.
If you're going to wound a finger, the middle one is preferable. It makes it more fun when people ask what happened.
"You mean THIS?!?"
@10:49 the part on the end is called a "bit" as in "drill bit", the mechanism that drives the bit is called the drill.
Sad that DYI is done, but so excited that you're going to start exploring again! :)
DIY is never done...
Fear not! In the next week I should get doohikes for 3 or 4 more projects ;) One of the projects will have to wait until we get somewhere with a good stainless guy :)
Wait until they get to the US…I have a feeling that Mads is going to have a huge list of “finish up the final details” type projects upon arrival.
Your stainless guy can weld a washer to make the hole smaller in the back plate. You could have used the pot holder to mount the gimbal preventer. Fun to watch you guys.
turn the back-splash up-side-down, and re-drill, those mistakes will probably be unseen
Seriously one of the best sailing channels on UA-cam! Keep it up.
Ava sounds just like my wife. No matter how well I clean, she will quietly take care of the things I missed.
As much as I enjoy the DIY, it is good to have Ava back. She does a great job describing the local sites - AND she doesn't seem to get motion sickness.
Looking forward to your next adventures sailing south. Now it is time for me to get back to my boat's "fun activities" that need repair.
Great job on everything, including your choice of a wife!
If you can find some SS washers that fit into the large hole you drilled, they could be used to keep the SS splash guard centered on that hole and just continue with your mounting. Just use a larger but thin piece of SS to put under that square stove mount bracket large enough to cover the larger hole and the filling washers in it around all sides.
Hey Mads, could you do an episode on how much you've spent on this project so far? I know it's not a very danish thing to do ;)
Nice job, Mads! The boat looks awesome. WELCOME HOME Ava! Happy dance! I missed you. 💕😎💕😎💕
Its absolute bonkers that this channel doesnt have more subscribers!
She's back!!!11 (ace entrance)
When drilling stainless use water as a lubricant rather than oil. It keeps things cool and works much much better. I found this tip on youtube and it has been a BIG improvement when ever I've had to do it.
Eva's I'm back! Reminded me of Psycho...but in a good way. Great job! Happy wife happy life.
Welcome back Ava. Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
Mads, As a student of your Uber Zen Glorious sanding practice and a fellow sailor. By the power vested in me by Great King Neptune. I hereby grant you unrestricted license to stop working all the time and enjoy sailing beautiful Athena. Sanding withdrawal is hard. But, trust me . It's worth the struggle. "Fair Winds " to you both
You could flip the backsplash upside down so that the goof holes are at the bottom and less visible, or you could trim that part off and make it shorter.
another week in the books. Great job. Looking forward to the next destination.
Fantastic job (minus the hickup which we never speak of again! LOL)! Been there since before you bought Athina and elated to see she's inches from "finished" and ready to "fully enjoy" You earned it bussy. Talk soon.
RELEASING THE TOILET PAPER .. isnt as bad as you think as when the rolls empty its just a cardboard tube, just crush it to grip the thingy and wiggle it out. i had a similar TP holder in an old house.
The TP holder will be a lot easier when it's empty and just the tube is left.. looking great!
Hi Mads and Ava. Making my way through the old episodes having found your channel a few weeks ago. Great content the mix of DIY and Sailing is a good mix. 🙂
They keep on making toilet paper rolls bigger and bigger lately here in the USA. I made a teak toilet paper holder back in 2017 for the head in our boat and used the biggest jumbo roll I could find in the stores as my sizing guide for the maximum expected diameter of the roll .
Now in 2022 fully half of the rolls we buy today barely fit into it and drag on the teak frame I built until a little bit of the roll is used up.
Hope you are doing well in Brest. Thanks for another great video. Will be nice to see the blinds in place too. Sea Yoo !
Thank you so much :) Snug as a bug here in the center of Brest! We both love the blinds - it's only now I realize how bad the papertowel looked ;)
Such wonderful people.
We seated windows and deck Hardwear with Sikaflex. 10 years later racing, cruising and rough seas, sun and harbour anchorage and no leaks.
Ava is back. That’s good. The DIY halting is less good. I might just skip next week.
Good Job guys as always.......idea: Why don't you flip the backsplash material and give it another go. The wrong holes will be on the bottom and they wont be visible anyway!
Looks like you need some Oceanair blinds
"BOOO" ohhh that was spooky. but i was perified when she said she was back
Congratulations, Mads, you outdid yourself on the OCD meter🥰. I would have put the gimbal mount right over my mistake, maybe with a washer to provide support, and put everything back in place.
Can you provide a link to the potholder you installed? it looks like a very nice unit.
Great jov Mads! Nice to see Ava back and sooo happy with the work you did!
Any reason you didn't just flip the backsplash upsidedown and use it anyway?
Mads, take care not abusing your self like no one else would be allowed to, or even feel the need to. There are no mistakes, only lessons learned.
Another great video AVA and MADS .
Looking good. Great to see you back together and having fun.
Backsplash what backsplash !😊Lookin good Mads
Happy sailing, yea even as a professional, the hole does go into the wrong place sometimes... Charles
Hi Mads to drill easy in stainless, use drill with titanium heads on…smooth as butter then👌
Hi Guys, My friend Mads. You could turn the back splash 180° and put the error below and the enlarged hole would be out of site.... Just a thought , happy sailing...
Hi Mads and Ava, I hope we get to hear about the birth of Ava's sisters child. Hope all is well, been watching since the beginning with Oblix. Look forward each week to hear from my friends. Its not a video its like I'm sitting on deck or in the saloon with you guys. Take care "see you" Carol
Great work and episode
No more Spaghetti O's for Mads, welcome home Ava!
Use cobolt drills for stainless, they are always sharp, they cut into stainless like you are drilling aluminium 👍
nicely done you two! the boat is really looking great!
Oh well, it was great while it lasted :) Hoping for at least some reports on the boat's technical systems while underway.
There is something about a Mads Ava video. Welcome Home.
Ava is back, yeah!!!🎉
A hack i have used over the year's is to add a weight to the bottom of the oven [outside], a divers weight works well, the added weight slows down the swing when under weigh.
TP for my Bunghole 👌
Cornhollyo.
Mads and Ava... for the bon voyage, you must provision some grilling meats of choice!
