CS and engineering friends! I hope you like this video. It's most of the advice I wish I had when I started off in CS. Hopefully, it can be helpful for you :)
Omg! I did the exact thing in college. I am female in 30s living in the East Coast area. I chased Nursing for about two years. I took hell a Science and math classes. I finally got in, did a year, then sadly my Iife changed, and I had to drop out at level 2. While collecting my belongings, I decided to visit my very first EBS teacher.Lets just say she was extremely surprise to see me around. She encouraged me followed her daughter's footsteps and learn how Code. I listened, did just that and graduated with a Degree in Science. Now, I am moving towards a career in Software Engineering. My plan is to mostly self teach myself how to code.I am now trying to figure out if a paid Mentor or a bootcamp is best for me since I am new to CS, and languages. Any tips or suggestions? I appreciate any feedback and thank in advance. Thanks for reading.
#2 hit home for me. I used to ask for help quite a bit, but I was always greeted with "Did you read the book?" or bare minimal help. Yes I did read but I am a visual learner, so I wanted help from a different perspective. I was surrounded by students and TA with the mentality of only helping themselves due to the competitive field, and it was a norm! Thankfully I go to another university where I do receive the help without judgement.
Hey Sosa that first one really resonates! I’m going into my second year even though I did really well in first year and loved what I learned, I’m still second guessing myself and whether or not I am going to be able to be successful in this field. All of your advice in this video was fantastic and very helpful. Please keep sharing your experiences/advice!
Thank you so much! Most of this is advice I wish I had when I started out so I’m glad it’s helpful :) and good luck with your second year. If you can get through the first, you can get through the second. Don’t doubt your potential for greatness. You got this!!
i love your videos! i was just having doubts about being a cs major. mainly because i’m a woman of color with little experience, like you expressed in the video. now my mind has completely changed! thank you sooo much
Great video. I already have a bachelors and associates in a different field, but Im about 4 classes deep into my CS program that i started for a career change (with some self learning experience before) and I experience all the things youre saying. New sub here!
thanks for the tips i like how ur very calm other youtubers make it sound very daunting u make it sound very real and pure lol btw i have a question so ima almost failing this class its programming and idk its so hard to do the exams basically lol and idk how everyone does good bc in my school u need above 65 to pass so help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha thanks. CS isn't as daunting as people think. Don't get me wrong, it can be super challenging but it's doable like any other major. Tell me more about what you need help with. What are you having a hard time with in your class? Have you tried to reach out to peers who can help you understand the content?
Walking away from code that you can't figure out is the best advise you could have given. I won't work on a problem for two hours straight trying to 'figure it out'. If I can't resolve a problem within 30 minutes and I'm getting frustrated with work, I walk away from the computer. I stop thinking about it and spend a half hour doing something else. Anything else besides looking at code. Nine times out of ten, I come back to my computer and immediate spot the error. After looking at code for an extended period of time, mental fatigue begins to set in. The longer you set there the worse it gets. As a CompSci major working towards a MS, I never do more than one hour of work at a time. I take a 10 to 15 minute break and then get back to it for another hour. If I feel myself becoming frustrated or I get stuck on a problem, I stop working and spend 30 minutes to an hour away from the problem, then come back with a fresh perspective. This works nearly every time. Sometimes, however, you will still need to seek the help of someone with more experience. It's just going to happen. If you just can't get it after a couple of hours, then definitely seek out help.
I'm 24 taking my first cs classes this year. No knowledge in coding. I am so worried about if I am going to be able to do it. I wished I was younger and doing this. I feel bad for myself not graduating at 24.
Moment I knew I wanted to go into CS was when I took genomics/bioinformatics. Final exam required writing a function in python to extract a sequence from a data file. I spent about 30 hrs trying to get my code to work without realizing it. Terrified and excited in getting into this field.
Hi I'm a CS student but it takes me so much time taking notes on concepts and algorithms and im starting to think its a waste of time writing so much bcs it doesn leave mr much yime to code. Can u give me some tip?
Sometimes i write my solution in sentences. Like a to do list. It's easier cause it doesn't really include mathematical statements or calculations and helps you plan your approach to the problem. If you try that first it might make it faster to write the algorithm
for algorithms you might be better just commenting out your code as you go along so you can go back and remember what different parts do, for notes i type all of mine up in a word document (one per module) and use ctrl-F to quickly find different topics. if you think writing notes isn’t helping you, maybe that’s just not how you learn and you should look at other ways.
If you're in college, you can start by taking the intro class. That's how I started! I had no knowledge of CS before that. Even if you're not in college, there are a bunch of great free intro classes online like this one: online-learning.harvard.edu/course/cs50-introduction-computer-science?delta=0
hi I'm thinking of doing computer science in university what do you think I can do to get a head start and make things easier for myself. iv already made notes on the basics of java and python but math wise what can i do

Please should someone study CS before software engineering?
Awesome to see a woman in CS. I really want to go into Computer Science, so this is inspiring.

Looking into computer science to see if it’s for me
Welcome :) I’m here if you have any questions!
@@heysosathedev Coding just seems impossible for me. I tried watching some beginner python tutorials and jesus christ it didn't make sense to me.

Good job, Sosa! I'm just getting started, never coded before.. You are a brave person!
Go for it!!
@@heysosathedev in my 3rd week now. More math oriented than I expected!
How are you holding up with the math? I can send you some resources if you need it but my guess is that you’re doing fine :)
@@heysosathedev Hey! Do you think you could send some resources for math help? Struggling with coding in college hah
@@jes8432 How is coding like in college if you don't have previous knowledge of coding?
thank you, I'm trying to get into computer science and I haven't coded a day in my life. I really hope i can move forward in this.
Great vid! I'm in CS rn and I don't even take any programming class yet and it's hard already 🤦🏽♂️😤
Wonderful insight! Love the honesty, love the confidence.
Thanks so much!
So bright, so well spoken, impressive young lady!!

I’m 32 and switching from a long term career in healthcare to CS. I’m a bit nervous too, but it can absolutely be done.
thank you for your great advices. waiting to see your new videos Sosa!
