  • A blindfolded boy, believed to be guided by the will of God, selects Bishop Tawadros as the next leader of the Coptic Christian church, in an elaborate ceremony.
The 59-year-old bishop, who is an aide to the acting pope, will become Pope Tawadros II, replacing the popular Pope Shenouda III who died earlier this year after 40 years as leader of Egypt's Coptic Christian Church.
He was selected in an elaborate ceremony at Abbasiya cathedral in Cairo on Sunday, when his name was picked from a crystal chalice by a blindfolded altar boy.
Pope Bahomious, who has been in temporary charge since Shenouda's death, proclaimed: "Pope Tawadros II is the 118th [leader of the church] blessed congratulations to you."
