There is a very interesting book that describe such women as Hester: "Women who love too much" by Robin Norwood. As they say, neurotics love those who don't love them and don't love those who love them. Such toxic attachment is a greeting from childhood from cold parents, it is an attempt to achieve love not of a particular man (woman), but of her (his) father or mother. In this painful attachment, a woman (man) doesn't love certain man (woman), but try to mend her (his) own childhood injuries. For such a woman (man), normal relationships are boring and bland. They find those who are emotionally cold and inaccessible to them and try to change them, which leads to scandals, protests and even suicide.
I just heart Tom Burke. ❤ fantastic actor and activist ❤❤
