Removing & Inspecting the Boom! | Franna Crane Project | Part 10

- We’re removing the boom off the crane so we can inspect the boom extension cylinder and anything else that needs repair! This video is Part 10 in our Franna crane project and we’re getting the boom removed off the crane before inspecting it for damage. First, we work on lowering and disconnecting the boom lift cylinders before removing the wiring and pins that connect the boom to the crane. We then lift the boom from the crane and get on to inspecting it for any damage, but as we suspected, getting access to the boom extension cylinder and parts to be repaired is NOT going to be easy! I'm in awe of your mechanical engineering skills - the mechanical design of that boom is amazing, and you approach it with such calm assurance. I bet the last person you worked for was really pissed off when you resigned.
The last person I worked for is now one of our biggest customers 😅 he still asks me to go back and work there lol

Something I just noticed that makes these videos so endlessly watchable. He may be doing the same thing repetitively very often, but equally often he does the same things with different tools, in a slightly different way, because he is fundamentally a very creative guy.

Was thinking the same thing. Oh I know how all of this works already but man what a difference having all the equipment that Curtis has and what a feat that John was able to do his.
Jon's Farmcraft101 rework of his crane would be a good study before starting this project. This one is quite a bit more complex than his was but it wold still be a good watch for someone who is going to tackle a project like this. I'm looking forward to the rest of this project. Kurtis has a gift for analyzing this stuff that just amazes me.

Check out the FarmCraft101 video where he rebuilds a telescoping cylinder like this - he has a series of videos and explains really well how these pulley systems and shims work. Might give you some ideas of where to look for complex parts in your crane.
Fridays are the best I love going home after work and watching these amazing videos
Here in Norway it is 8 AM. I'm a nightowl and usually sleep to at least noon, but at Fridays I now have a "sleep break" between 8 and 9 AM :-) .

I find myself going through wild swings of emotions when you put out videos. I get excited and happy when I see the new video. I get focused and curious while watching. Then I get frustrated and sad when the video comes to an end. And as a send off, I laugh at the bloopers 🤣 keep up the great work.
Great Homey calendar. Such a lovable ridiculous character. Great bit with the bigger wrench to get the valve hose nut loosened. Always a bigger solution available at Cutting Edge. It's one of the details that make this site special, efficacios and so thouroghly professional. (Brake cleaner. See? Right) The right tool and the NEXT right tool with the clever, experienced knowledge to get a cranky, awkward job done and done right. One of the many reasons why you have the attention of so many.
This crane series is becoming really interesting!!! For a moment I remembered Farmcraft101 rebuilding the cyclinder from the 80 foot boom lift! Stay safe.
That was an excellent description of the hose burst valve operation and using the power pack to move the checks so the boom can be lowered. Very concise and crystal clear explanation.

unfortunately one lady lost her life after a tree fell on her car, but was pretty amazing there was no one else killed or badly injured

I just watched esp 1 & 2. Excellent scale model and explanation of how cylinder uses chain/cable to extend and retract the fly boom. Recommended viewing for those who enjoy booms.
This crane project is gonna be good. With Kurtis’ attention to detail, it’s gonna be like new. Thinking about all those affected by the storms. ❤

Good to hear you guys didn't get any major damage done. We had 98kmh winds here north of Brisbane. Lots of trees had limbs broken off and plenty of big trees blown over roots and all. Lots of creeks finally flowing and lots of inflow and dams filled which is really good for farmers etc. They're predicting more storms I'm not too sure if it's next week or later in the month. Either way I hope they aren't as bad as the ones we just had. Happy new year and another great video 😎👍
@@aregeebee201 yeah I keep telling people its like the 8s & 90s and all I keep getting is IT'S GLOBAL WARMING. It's just normal weather that's come full circle and the storms that used to be isolated are now a bit wider spread.

@@DrTubeman I've been in New Hampshire USA for 12 years and even in that short period there is a noticeable difference in weather extremes. Deny it all you want, but this thing is real. Go ask any farmer, beekeeper, or fisherman. Glad I live on the top of a hill!

When you put up the fabric cover I was skeptical of it surviving a rough wind...now we know!

That fabric is very durable! I’m pretty sure it’s the same, or very similar, to stuff I’ve worked with in the past. It’s pricey compared to some other fabrics but probably cheaper in the long run because of durability. The dome shape to it also helps with the wind. I have seen it rip open with tons (literally) of snow and ice, and crush an empty car below. That situation was improper installation and zero maintenance.
The container roof we have at work which is very similar has broken in some way every winter since it was installed,it's always brackets or clamps that fail.
It has survived 90mph winds though only just, one whole side came free from the container except one corner clamp, it was really going out of shape though.

Watching this is a real insight into the depth of knowledge you have. I am always fascinated in seeing your analyze and solve issues. Having Karen involved in operating equipment to help analyze and solve issues is admirable to say the least. You both are a great team and couple. This channel is one of the most inspiring on UA-cam. I can't wait to see what you two do next!
I've just gotta say the most amazing part of that crane is that You can extend and retract the boom, without simultaneously having to run the main hoist up or down.
It's got some kind of fancy trigonometry going on
When the cables are adjusted the affect the timing at the maintenance hole to disassemble . You will need to loosen the timing cables in order to bring the cross pin and attachment point into the window. It is a bit of a pain in the ass.
I've been waiting patiently for the crane project to continue. Glad to see ya getting back into it. What a great way to start off the year!
Access to the end of the rod end of the cylinder looks pretty good. I would bet that the equalizer cable adjustment will get you access to one of the access windows. I bet it is made in such a way that when a new cable is installed it can then be further adjusted once it has normalized around the pulleys. 150~200 mm on a cable of that type and length would be expected. Well I would expect it to settle that much.
Something else to be aware of with the pilot operated valves on the lift cylinders is that if there ever is a piston seal bypass or more often a failure they can move when the ports are open with the valve in place. It normally only happens on the annular side of the cylinder but can happen if there is damage on the piston seal making disassembly interesting.
Some people have fun putting puzzles together, others have fun taking cranes apart...!

Don't if its the same on the Franna, but generally they inspection holes don't line up on purpose. Prevents someone from trying to take it apart, they are just there for inspection an assembly. They don't want you to pull the cylinder unless you do a full service and inspection on the boom.

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering fine a 50m+ piece of nylon sheathed rope these close to the same size as the cable in the boom. Pull back the sheath in one end, cut out a good foot if the core. Then unkock the free end of the cable, slide the sheath over, and heat sink it on. Pull the cable out of the boom completely, leaving the rope.
Now you can pull the sections apart and feed the rope in. Let's see how the cable was run via the rope.
Do the opposite by putting it together with the rope, then pulling the cable though via the rope.
Only done a 2 section with manual, but it worked wonders.
This has to be the best loved Franna ever.

I really like just how much attention you pay to your safety at work. Every time I see you're about to start something that looks a bit sketchy, there's a cut and in the next shot you've got the ppe on. I don't work with hydraulics that could be under pressure so I didn't anticipate that risk; your acknowledgment of the risk and the succinct explanation of the assessment you'd done was really refreshing. It's rare to see such a positive engagement with safety.

Now I understand why really big cranes cost millions of dollars. These things are extremely complicated and difficult to work on. I think I would have been thinking of sending this boom somewhere to get it refurbished. Kurtis has a lot of courage to take this job on. I have a feeling a crane manufacturer probably has a huge bench and special equipment to do this work and Kurtis is doing it like a roadside repair which has to be a lot harder, especially without prior knowledge and a complete repair manual with assembly instructions.

Glad to hear the workshop got through the storm with minimal damage, been seeing all the report on the news about it as well as hearing about from my cousin who lives near Roma. That boom looks like a bit of a clockwork nightmare, I definitely don't envy you tearing into that and replacing the bearings and shims.
The attention & work you're giving to this machine will definitely add some 50+ years of life in it 😺😺.
What’s funny is I’ve been going through some older videos (as I just recently started watching) and think of the professionalism that sand blaster will give you.

You obviously have a very good idea in your head of how everything should work and some of the problems you could face pulling the boom apart, and while I know this is effectively a part-time project for you, I know that like many of your fans, I will be waiting in a high state of anticipation for the next episodes about this boom restoration. I do have to say, I admire the way you’ve built safety into your procedures. When I worked on high voltage ceramic kilns, I realized there’s a lot of ways to get hurt, so you have to do things in a specific order to prevent irreversible damage to you and the equipment.
