It Might Get Loud "Three Rock Legends" (Jimmy Page, Jack White, The Edge)

- It Might Get Loud is the title of a 2008 documentary by filmmaker Davis Guggenheim. One of the most dynamic gatherings in music history takes place in the new film IT MIGHT GET LOUD when legends Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White come together to play, compare notes and talk about music and their mutual love of the electric guitar. Directed by Davis Guggenheim and conceived by producer Thomas Tull, the film, through the words and music of three generations of musicians, celebrates the love affair these men and countless others have with the electric guitar, perhaps the most innovative and challenging instrument ever created.
IT MIGHT GET LOUD isnt like any other rockn roll documentary. Filmed through the eyes of three virtuosos from three different generations, audiences get up close and personal, discovering how a furniture upholsterer from Detroit, a studio musician and a painter from London and a seventeen-year-old Dublin schoolboy, each used the electric guitar to develop their unique sound and rise to the pantheon of superstar. Rare discussions are provoked as we travel with Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White to influential locations of their pasts. Born from the experience is intimate access to the creative genesis of each legend, such as Link Wrays Rumbles searing impression upon Jimmy Page, who surprises audiences with an impromptu air guitar performance. But thats only the beginning.
While each guitarist describes his own musical rebellion, a rockn roll summit is being arranged. Set on an empty soundstage, the musicians come together, crank up the amps and play. They also share their influences, swap stories, and teach each other songs. During the summit Pages double-neck guitar, The Edges array of effects pedals and Whites new mic, custom build into his guitar, go live. The musical journey is joined by visual grandeur too. We see the stone halls of Headley Grange where Stairway to Heaven was composed, visit a haunting Tennessee farmhouse where Jack White writes a song on-camera, and eavesdrop inside the dimly lit Dublin studio where The Edge lays down initial guitar tracks for U2s forthcoming single. The images, like the stories, will linger in the mind long after the reverb fades.
IT MIGHT GET LOUD might not affect how you play guitar, but it will change how you listen. The film is directed and produced by An Inconvenient Truths Davis Guggenheim, and produced by Thomas Tull, Lesley Chilcott and Peter Afterman.

Jimmy Page: Ahead of his time!
The Edge: used every tool to his advantage during his time!
Jack White: Taking us back in time!
Edge was wayyyyy ahead of his time in the 80s.
@@matthughes2566 lol.
Great observation!
Absolutely nailed it
everytime Page plays i feel like the other 2 are sweating him really hard lol
i love how their faces light up when he plays whole lotta love
The look on Jack White and the Edges faces as Jimmy plays Whole Lotta Love is priceless.
The film was brilliant. You can see the mutual respect they have for each other on their faces. Truly genuine. It takes a very small person to insult any one of them.
I'm small - the edge doesn't belong here he is just not in Page's league.
@@sean1121970only way to learn is to listen to someone better. If JP were a snob and not willing to show his ‘tricks’ etc he would have told him where to get off.
They obviously chose these 3 guys because of their different perspectives of music and tgeir craft, if you don't enjoy one of them, there's no reason to go full on fanboy-mode and insult others.
All 3 of them were born in different phases of rock history. While jimmy became famous during the the golden years of rock, jack had to struggle against everyone telling him rock is dead.
It's pretty clear that different struggles create different artists - that's the beauty of it, isn't it?
+FancyTophatDude agreed!
During the time of Jack White garage rock/post-punk revivalism was booming and in the mainstream, at the same time some metal new genres were booming, rock was very far from dead, it was having the biggest surge since grunge.
Well said, all three of these guys respect the hell out of each other, all guitarists together. All share the same love.
I dont really get it! How can you hate on Jack White, Jimmy Page, or... The Edge... ohhh... one of these things is not like the other...
and the Edge...is an artist in his own right.
All respect to Jack and Edge, but Jimmy is on beyond all guitarists. He’s the alien to all mere earthlings.
can the edge even play?
Tom Moyer yeah
Come on, Jack White is a legit musical genius and you know it.
I agree. Jimmy is the only legitimate legend in this group.... just my opinion...
@@eveready1999 I'd take Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton over anybody....well add Mick Mars for the fluff value :)
there all legends, jimmy page is just a different kind of legend
He's the kind that actually knows how to play guitar .

There will never be anyone like him. The other two are everyday guitar players. Jimmy is a rock god!

I'm not a dude. I never heard of jack white until he was on that movie. He doesn't seem to have the same respect for his guitar as most guitarist do. Even my brother loves his guitar! He would never treat it like jack did. He played well, and seemed like a good guy. But he's no Jimmy Page. Though Jimmy seemed to like him. Jimmy is the man!!
Your right, there all rock legends but Jimmy is THE Legend 😂
Edit: he’s literally the best guitar player ever
Hey I just realized Jack white in no way considers himself a legend. He shows submission when he says he wants to learn from these two. He's very humble about it!
All the while laughing at Dave, on the inside!
HohMahGawd Tbh he’s more of a legend for me than Edge...

Sucks that the comment section turned into a debate on who’s best of the 3. Why don’t we just appreciate them all

Don’t know why , there is no debate , Jimmy is at the top , lols
THAT´s the way, bro
EXACTLY...we all know what they say about opinions.
Shut up, listen and appreciate
Jimmy is so sharp
The Edge is more than just a guitar, he's a magician. It really doesn't matter what instrument you're playing or how you use this instrument. If you can make beautiful sounds from simple chords and distorting the sounds by a pedal. Than that is brilliance. You can't deny The Edge has undeniable, memorable rock anthem sounds.
anyone else love it when page is talking about the distortion pedal and he describes the sound it makes as "pretty rude"?
Three Legends, (Jimmy Page, marshall,gibson)
AkabanewPlayer... and one massive thieving plagiarizer who stole as best music from other people without giving them credit: Jimmy Page.
AbbeyRoadkill1 and one angry, jealous, wrong, pointless idiot hating his life so bad he’s got to take it out on someone famous who he’ll never know.
AkabanewPlayer
HAHAHA....totally
The Edge is very mor complete. And U2 is the best Rock Band hall of the time.
Whammy Bard lol bro he played guitar , all of those songs he “stole” sound nothing like the previous versions you mention . ONLY thing they ever stole were lyrics. Which is actually very common in the blues
Thomas Tull(Director of the film) was on Lex Friedman podcast last year. He was talking about the filming of the documentary. One part of it that I absolutely loved is what he said happened after they were done what they needed to have to complete the documentary. He said once they were finished, Jimmy Page, Jack White, and Edge asked the production team if it would be ok if they hung around for a bit so they can keep playing. Of course the team said yes. And then they ended up adding that into the film when they didn’t expect it to happen. He said it was just like three teenagers hanging out talking about something they love mutually. That’s just such a cool image to me that it doesn’t matter whether you’re the most prolific songwriter in the history of the world or someone in your basement who just bought your first acoustic. That boyish passion still is in there.
two guitarists and one legend.
I love the way Jack just stares and smiles, while the amazing Jimmy plays.
He looks like a little kid the first time he sees santa.
How can Jack White not be a lengend? In the early 2000s we were in a musical hole, Jack brought back the rock. Jack White and Jimmy Page are actually really good friends and there's a reason for that.
People's disrespect for The Edge is unbelievable. Page and other blues artists came before him so he is always compared to them, but The Edge is in a whole different realm. Like he said, he goes crazy trying to perfect his tone. To him, it is all about the emotion and feeling he can express which is what it should be about at the end of the day. And trust me, I've seen him shred some solo's. He has said himself though that he is not that kind of guitar player because he doesn't like that style of playing. It is not always how complicated something is, but what the end result is. If he was a player like Page, then no one would care because that has been done! U2 started in the 80's. Do you realize how boring it would have been to hear another Led Zeppelin? The Edge and U2 in general pushed the limits of their time period. Open your minds people. I hate this redundant argument that if it is harder to play than it is better.
Well said, and it needed to be said. Thank you!
Zack Ramsey Edge is a TRUE talent! So is Jimmy, so is Jack! I do NOT disrespect any talent (especially when it is light years beyond what I can do!). Each artist has their own merits in their own way! I enjoy each and every artist for what THEY bring to the world,....and based on these three dudes bank accounts,....a LOT of people also seem to enjoy them! This is why I am not a fan of "best" lists.....no one is better than another on any given day....it all depends on the listeners mood.....and bottom line, whether or not they are willing to support the artist! Some days I want to listen to Johnny Cash.....a true LEGEND in his own right,....other days,...Edge......it matters not! Neither is better than the other! They ALL make music for us to enjoy if we choose! And, in conclusion....I bought this DVD.....what a great idea!
amen
Agreed! Secure guitarists & lovers of music in general, do not feel the need to disparage musician's such as The Edge! He's brilliant at what he does!
The hate comes from him spending most of his time messing with effects instead of actually playing guitar. If you sit around all day messing with effects you'll eventually find something easy to play that sounds amazing...that's him. That's why he doesn't have our respect. He is a guitar player and he knows music, but he's just not in the same league. Jack White is literally his exact opposite.
The greatest guitarist of all time. Edge and Jack aren't bad either
A guitarist playing something excruciatingly hard doesn't make them a legend. If it did, the guys in Dragonforce would be the greatest guitarists ever. Jimmy Page IS a legend, no question. He's one of the best musicians ever to pick up the axe, but the Edge and Jack White are as well. The Edge employs effects better than nobody, and his sound is incredibly hard to replicate - almost impossible. And Jack White's infectious melodies and quirky slide playing complement his great soloing perfectly.
It's the same argument that I make as for why I think Page is a better guitarist than Hendrix. It's not the incredible skill or the speed at which you play that makes you a legendary, it's how you play and when you decide to use that skill.
Jake Meade can i like this multiple times
yes you can, sir
Jake, I agree 100% man. I feel that knowing when to play what and when to remain silent, or reserved was the unspoken, never noticed rule of Zepp that made them what they are. I'm a Zepp head, have been since I was about 11 or 12. from the first 2 seconds of the first song I ever heard of them( Kashmir ) I knew I had discovered my favorite band, which was crazy because I never even thought of having a favorite band prior to that moment. Zeppelin is the greatest band that has ever graced our ears, and I can stand my ground with that argument for so many different reasons. Nobody will ever come close to them. R.i.p. John, your talent is what caused me to pick up sticks on so long ago, I only wish I could have had the chance to meet you..
The Edge is a great guitarrist, but another type. He had made incredible and UNFORGETABLE riffs.
Nice pun.
It ain't no competition I think it's great to see three great musicians come together with their diversity and similarities........... I 'd just love to be there too with a guitar in hand!!!
people bashing The Edge are ridiculous. is he a better player than Page? No. However, part of being a legend guitar player is actually creating your own sound and style. Nobody came showed The Edge how to create his style. There are many amazing guitarist all around the world but nobody knows who they are because they play others music. The edge created something so unique you know who it is. Page is the same but superior in his playing ability.
Really? Until Bono opens his mouth, I don't know Dave is the one playing!
I doubt the "Edge" could be even the slightest bit more overrated than he already is.
The Edge can literally play anything on the guitar but he doesn't need to play all of those menacing rock riffs to prove a point. What he does on the guitar give U2 is sonic identity and is the soul of their music. That sound and style worked for U2.
@@clintonjosephcAMIELj hahaha is that why they suck and are overrated?
@@AvidanTheExpositor To each his own
When I first saw this I thought jack white sucked. I finally gave his music a chance and I love it. The guy is a riff machine!
Love Jimmy obv. ...
But HUGE respect going out to the Edge ... early U2 guitar f-ng epic - on another level. Created a whole new world of guitar.
I've watched short clips about It Might Get Loud, but I was never able to watch it in its entirety. Amazing! Three Generations of very talented guitarists, a British, an Irish and an American.
FUCKING AWESOME! Oh, it would have been nice to sit in on this with them! They ALL are INCREDIBLE!
3 perfect representations of guitar gods
Jimmy Page still has it - the licks and the looks!
all three guys share the same love of playing music and their guitar. they're all amazing in their own right and genre of music
I am watching this because of Jack White, Jimmy Page, and The Edge. Love all three of 'em! Don't say that Jimmy is better, because no one is better, or worse, just different, everyone learns differently, sees the world differently and has different styles, traits and characteristics. It's a dumb thing to compare, because no two fruits are alike. All three of them have their own styles, and they all come from three different generations, so don't compare. They are legends of their own time.
In my opinion the combination of the edge, page and white is a very good and logical one, I mean look how complementary they are: Page is like the classic guitar virtuoso, with blistering solos and cool techniques, White would be the DIY guy, getting crazy sounds out of otherwise crappy instruments. The Edge finally is like the technology guy, getting beautiful tones by clever use of delay and echo effects.
I think we should look at the movie that way:)
They picked these three guitar virtuoso's with the intent of showing three different generations of intellect and influence. All three have earned the right to be there. All of them! All of them have earned respect in the music world. All three have an unmistakable sound.
Are they the greatest ever? No. But that's not the point of this movie. Never was. It's a showcase of talent that spans decades, genres, and influence.
the edge wasn't even using effects when they were jamming, and he still sounded good!!
Yeah you don’t need effects to sound good
He is just shit
Simply The BEST!!!
When you reach their Iconic status then talk :)
"1 Rock legend and 2 admirers"***
The edge has earned “ legend “ status
Greg's Channel so has jack white.
Gabe Williams he hasn’t been around long enough to be a legend . Look at the resume of the two then look at JW . He is still in diapers
Greg's Channel who cares how long he’s been around? He’s an amazing guitarist, has released shit tons of great music, and has inspired tens of thousands (myself included) to pick up the guitar.
Gabe Williams Jimi Hendrix , Buddy Guy , SRV , Clapton , Page , Duane Allmam we’re and are amazing guitarist . Jack White would never be mentioned in this group
These guys just have sheer brilliance!!
a true musician understands the art of music as something complex. it's not only about breath taking solos, but mostly about supporting the whole band with your instrument. these 3 guys have brought their new and unique sound to their bands and to the modern music itself, so they are definitely not overrated. they are true artists, regardless of technical skills or whatever some of you guys arghument with. they have their own sound which you can recognize right away, they became trade marks.
God, just imagine if this had been Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi and David Gilmour.
I can see that that would be great, but I think the director was trying to get different stories from different scenes and time periods. Those three were all in the British scene of rock and early metal around the same period. All kings of course
B.B. King should have been in this
haha guitar gods
God, imagine if people like you understood the point of picking three completely different guitar players with completely different styles from three different generations to appear in the movie...... Your comment is such a cliche.
No, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonnamassa maybe😎😎😎
Great clip ... They are all good but to me Page is God like, I could listen to him play and talk all day everyday. Perhaps it's my age (in my 50's). Jimmy Page - what a life :-)
no I'm 16 and I feel the same way so its not your age, but I almost feel the same way about Jack White
+Austin Moser thanks for that, I guess quality spans the generations. Enjoy life.
Doug Lumsden ya no problem, u enjoy life as well
The M4 Boar I'm 58 too...I love Jimmy...always will. Be is awesome and stays that way. I too can watch him the rest of my life.
The mark of real artists. Respecting each other's manifestation, no matter how simple or technical. They all admire their creations. They all belong to different time periods of music. All represent their era in some way. 70s Hard Rock Jimmy Page that oozes hedonism and excess. The 80's Post Punk of The Edge that went on that same pattern of creating soundscapes with effects. Then the whimsical 00's garage rock revival of Jack White that I still don't understand, yet it still creates an experience. He's an icon of that age
Rock is alive and kicking, always will be brother. If rock leaves the mainstream it exists within various subcultures "underground" - but if you really want I can list a bunch of rock bands that are still tearing shit up...
Jimmy Page is a nice guy...
not if you ask the kids on college campuses all over america. Social justice warriors against alleged pedophiles.

Tis' sacrilege my boy to even mention Jack whatever in the same sentence as Jimmy "The Legend" Page....

As a massive U2 fan I say, yes, Edge isn't in the same league as Jimmy Page. Page is in fact on a different planet. U2 however, after 40 years, are still selling out stadiums by writing and producing and playing their own rock music. That puts them as a band some place different from those who came before them.
JB also sells out stadiums
Jack White isn't a particularly spectacular guitarist either, but he represents a certain stylistic origin worth bringing to the table.
Fucking size of Jimmy's arms like Popeye
Yes, agreed. And if Dave were as honest about his guitar playing talent as he ISN'T about his bald head, I've have a lot more respect for him. (Or, at least a little!)
wherever i read, people keep saying "aw the edge doesn't have any real talent, he just uses effects". but i think all three are great guitarists in their own respects.

The thing that strikes me is how these three guys just love music so much that they must make music in the best way they can and with their own unique ways.
I love Page too, but good lord all the Page fanboys that comment on this video are unbelievably condescending and snobby. No need to hate on other guitar players. They've all been very successful in their own way. The whole point of this movie is about celebrating different styles- being elitist and condescending is exactly what you're NOT supposed to do.

Page may have stolen most of his songs from others, but he was the greatest thief ever, thank god for that. He also happensto be maybe the greatest studio wizard ever. That period from 69-79 he was touched by God or the Devil, probably both.
have you listened to the originals..are you even aware of what happens in the blues scene...?? "stealing" lyrics is very common in blues...and Jimmy's riffs and rhythms are NOTHING like the originals ... so maybe stop regurgitating what you read somewhere and form your own opinion ... its just pathetic XD
Stairway,Dazed & Confused and Whole Lotta Love were knowingly ripped off from other artists. That's a fact.
Kashmir was written by John Paul Jones.
What exactly has Jimi Page done beyond that?
At least the Edge can rightfully take credit for his greatest songs...
Jonesy didn't compose the whole Kashmir arrangement alone, in fact the song main riff was John Bonham's idea, Jimmy had some parts in a citar tuning, everybody helped a little, Kashmir is such an amazing song.
Jack White used lots of blues material, especially now on his solo career, in fact lots of blues guitarists did and still do that.
Jimmy Page did not write the lyrics for Whole Lotta Love but as a guitarist he did what he needed to do, not the lyrics, not the bassline, not the beat, but the main guitar riff and solo, which were completely new.
ah ah ah. what a cook... u are.
If you really dig into it, almost 1/3rd of Zep's entire recorded catalog are covers of other people's songs.
he founded Led Zeppelin...

Corporal Cal allegedly "stealing" riffs doesn't even matter in this context. White is too new and too simple of a pro player to be considered legendary. Understand fanboy?
Corporal Cal I just see a lot of White lovers saying things like that just to boost him up, so it's why I assumed you were a fanboy.
This isn't about stealing songs or "integrity" or whatever. You're veering off the point. My point is White is too new and young to be considered legendary. You don't have to agree with me, I just think it's odd calling him a legend. He's only been in the mainstream for what 10-15 years?
Give him time; he's a relative "kid" in the industry!
