Nice trip! Yea, after ice out travelling the upper St. John requires hand-lining. Big parts of the Allagash get pretty low as well. You might have good flow for paddling just about everywhere up until Early to mid June, depending on the weather. During the good bug weather, black flies are out, mosquitoes and deer flies are coming. You can get socked in for a cold wet week of solid drizzle up there that time of year as well :) Doing it a bit later in the season is better for weather and maybe fewer black flies (hah!) but yea, lots of walking. I did lots of poling, hand-lining, and wading back in the days. Enjoy your youth, you are doing it right by getting out there.
Just recently found your videos. Beautiful video canoeing with Gracy. She’s a great travel partner. Is she pure bred Lab? I’ve got two Labs, which I love. Great dogs. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks Robin, I plan on doing this trip again and doing a better job filiming it. I had my friends at Tyler Kelly's Camp's drive the truck to Allagash for me.
Great video. I plan on doing Baker to Allagash in the spring. You think most of the camp sites along the river can accommodate a 3-6 person tipi shelter?
@@TheMaineWoods Thanks for this great video! I also plan on doing Baker to Dickey this upcoming May. I am not an experienced paddler with river canoeing (I'm quite an experienced ocean kayaker). Do you think this is a bad first major river trip?
@@michaelsalama6631 the only major paddling experience i had prior to doing this trip was the Allagash waterway, the St. John is much more intense. Two major sections of class 2-3 whitewater. I wasn’t able to film those rapids with my camera setup at the time, I plan to do this trip again and provide better footage of those parts of the river
I just came across your channel by a UA-cam recommendation. I enjoy your short trip on the river. I live in Central Indiana and I just love to go canoeing with my 17 foot fiberglass dolphin canoe. By the way what was that longer fish that you caught that you said were invasive fish?
Try mixing soft and silky from Avon( I think) and water in a spray bottle. 50/50 mix. Spray it on the dog. It will keep the bitting bug off. My mom used it on her horses and it worked great.

Gracie what??? Your yelling at you dog with no commands?? Iv’e had Labs and they are the best dogs alive. My 2 cents. Im sure you can teach her to heal and sit. And then look no yelling Nice video

Nice, you get some excellent shots for a solo trip, and your dog is great to watch. Did you have someone drive your truck out.

Many of the sites were over grown and not well maintained due to the low volume of paddlers on the river
Allagash has the worst bugs besides 1 month in Alaska… I feel for ya
