It’s weird that apple macbook took a sharp turn to the right direction in a heartbeat. Suddenly everyone recommending it and I’m personaly interested in macs for the first time
The main issues with the mac redesigns were always the insane heat/noise and terrible keyboard, both are now fixed so the machine is finally what it was supposed to be.
Yeah same here... After seeing the initial reviews, had to buy one and no regrets!
-D/
@@slywolf_ Yeah the thermals have been an issue with these generations. Keyboard has improved a lot ever since that butterfly keyboard fiasco so thats good. Im still stuck with my pro from 2017 so im paranoid the keyboard will go bad.
The big game changer is Apple Silicon. M1 draws 7 watts idle and 40 under full load. Intel draws ~20watts idle. More energy = more loss as heat.
they’ve always been great, they were just too expensive for how quick the batteries would die out overtime, they’d get really hot and loud, the expensive storage increase options, and they’d have OS slowdown overtime. However, imo it was a lot of intels fault for bottlenecking them. I love windows pcs but a mac is a must in my opinion, its such a super smooth and clean experience. Watching movies on the retina displays is great and the speaker are so good for laptops. Macs have ALWAYS been great, they just got a lot better, cleaned up the few cons they had, and finally making that price tag totally worth it.
I personally feel this is the Air Steve Jobs wanted all along. Everything, even the price just makes sense and works well.
You are absolutely correct: "People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware." - Steve Jobs

@@HardwareCanucks you really left him the D
It's true. Such a pleasure to watch. Amazing work Dmitry!
Hey!… it’s randomfrankp.
Dude casually filmed a whole movie for this review
One of the best laptops I’ve ever owned. The battery life is amazing. Build quality is the best in the business. The display is gorgeous. Lastly the performance is minding blowing. I don’t really throw much at it, but it handles what I need and still plays World of Warcraft like a champ.
haha ... what's gaming like on a MacBook Air?
-D.
@@HardwareCanucks only really play World of Warcraft on it, but I’m getting good frame rates on full resolution. I cap my FPS at 60 but it will hit much higher.
Good you don’t have flexgate problem but better sell when you can
Some folks have reported playing frickin GTA 5 on the damn thing at Normal-High settings at 50-60fps at 1080p...
Again though, this being a first-of-its-kind machine you have to overcome some barriers. There isn't a MacOS version of the game, so you have to create a Steam bottle on CrossOver and play games via a DirectX/Vulkan -> Metal translation layer, and Rosetta & CrossOver handles the CPU part. And then the Rockstar launcher doesn't actually launch, so you have to get a fresh copy of the game off the internet (from 'questionable' sources). So you won't be playing GTA Online on it, but the Story Mode plays just fine.
And despite all of the translation layers in place, the graphics of games sometimes having 2 translation layers (DirectX -> Vulkan -> Metal) and Rosetta for the CPU, GTA 5 still manages to run at 60fps, on an ultrabook. It's a testament to how good of a job Apple has done with Rosetta, and of course, the M1 itself.
@Male Sensitivity I bought this because World of Warcraft was a supported game. I wanted a thin and lite laptop that I could use on the couch the play World of Warcraft. It doesn’t disappoint.
Glad to see you’re still enjoying it. Great Review
Thanks man :)

@@HardwareCanucks bro do you face any heating issue in m1 air ?
Love the fact that another UA-cam great comments here!
this is superb. you covered so many of your real life pro use cases that haven’t been brought up in so many of the earlier reviews! lot of great info here and wow what a game changer the tech industry has on its hands with the M1
I agree. I’ve worked in IT for 30+ years and have used tons of laptops, and this one is by FAR the “best”, most enjoyable-to-use laptop I’ve ever used. It’s not perfect, but it’s damn close.
Does the 8gb ram limit you much please tell.
Does the new M2 beat it? What's your thoughts Daniel?
@@KarlM-k7k I have 16GB and have never had any memory problems.
@@archiehickox6518 OK so I have both the M1 and M2 MacBook Airs now and am switching between them. The M2 has a notch in the display, which I don't like, is 0.1lb lighter, which isn't noticable, and feels physically bigger even though it isn't. I guess the screen is a tiny bit larger but I don't even notice that. The M2 does have MagSafe charging, which is cool. Other than that I'm not really sure it's worth the extra $$$. My staff pointed out that the M2 will likely have longer Mac OS support, but that's not much of a consideration for home users.
Could you tell me that how much storage can you recommend for a computer science student? (I have an external hdd)
This is the most dramatically edited video on any tech product I have ever seen! Kudos!
Haha I hope in a good way :p

All of his observations of the basic things like being able to open it with one hand, no wobble in the keyboard, good speakers, amazing trackpad etc are the things us Apple folk have been talking about all along. The bits you actually physically interact with is something Apple nails so well and it's hard to explain to people how these things impact your entire experience without them actually experiencing them. It's more than a spec sheet.
People laughed at you, but once they taste the reliability they can’t go back
But like how often would you use a trackpad in real life?
@@GoTnUnion what do you mean real life? If you're moving a lot when working like students then trackpads are used a lot since bringing a mouse everywhere can be annoying. I personally don't really like using a mouse with a laptop unless I also have an external keyboard since my work is generally a lot of typing and moving between a mouse and the integrated keyboard is less user-friendly than using the touchpad.
@@GoTnUnion if you’ve experienced the MacBook Trackpads for a bit you’ll know why everybody is worshiping them. And you will maybe don’t even want to use a mouse anymore because the trackpad just works so well. The gestures just work so well.
@@GoTnUnion I know people in uni who does graphic design just with a track pad that's how good it is lol
Bought one a week ago, from using other windows laptops like Dell or Lenovo and even my desktop that sort of out performs as it 16gb RAM, I 'm loving it. It's on for around 12 hours a day getting a full work load and performs great and still remains to keep cool. Thinking of upgrading it next year to the M2 but with 16gb of RAM just for the fun of it!
This is my first time watching your channel but i was really surprised by the quality of the video. Great work :)
What a review! I just ordered and will have mine by Monday! I used to be a power user but this is going to be a daily work driver for me. Confirms I made the right decision!!
I haven't owned an apple product in like 10 years, but I have an Air M1 in my bag right now about to pull the trigger. Everything I've researched seems just amazing the performance they have put into a $1,000 device
I bought an M1 Macbook pro with 16gb ram back in Dec of 2020 and i've been extremely happy with the purchase, more recently since i've gotten a house with my wife and two kids, it's really nice to have my macbook pro because I can't always be tied to my mancave. Definitely an amazing device, battery life is insane
I would love one. I had a MacBook Air a few years ago and it lasted me about 8 years. I’ve had so many silly expensive PC’s over three decades, but my Air was genuinely my favourite ‘computer’. Everything just worked. These new M1 variants look beautiful!
What happened to it?
@@Black.Sabbath I sold it :(
may I know if MacBooks are really for long term use? some of my friends who owns one says it is most likely will last for 2 years only. is it really true it lasted for 8 years?
@@thom_baga Well the macbook that I have definitely has lasted me 8 years and I use it everyday for pretty much everything.
@@thom_bagamy MacBook is 9 years old but I can’t install Lightroom on it so I just ordered the M1 - otherwise my MacBook still works great and it’s only 4GB. I’ll be giving it to my daughter.

Oh my gosh I haven’t seen your channel in forever and seeing it again has brought me joy!
Solid! I’ve been waiting for a few more of these long-term reviews, good to know the base model doesn’t quite cut it for super multi-tasking.
Love the shots and grade. It's super cinematic 🔥🔥
I am watching this on my m1 iPad i have never seen a video this sharp and clear whatever magic you did there , great video
Cinematic tech reviews by Hardware Canucks are both informative & mesmerizing. It is a perfect combination of art & information. Superb content & elevated camera work, lighting, color, & framing is magnificent. Great job!
love your reviews Dmitry, keep the great work!
Agreed. I got my mom a base model M1 Air and, as a huge PC enthusiast whose last Mac product was a 2008 unibody MacBook (which I loved) I'm extremely impressed with it. For the money, it's an incredible machine and I have no faults with it short of my gripes with OS X (which has nothing to do with the hardware itself)
may I know if MacBooks are really for long term use? some of my friends who owns one says it is most likely will last for 2 years only
@@thom_baga it is average lifespan of laptop if you use it brutally
EYYY!!!! you finally uploaded in an ultrawide aspect ratio instead of letterboxing a 16:9 video, much appreciated!!!!
Probably the best production on any Hardware Canucks video, ever! Well done man!
Great summary of the baseline M1 MBA. Really like your lighting and field of view framing. Hope to be productive on a MBA 16Ram, 512GB SSD. Cheers!
I agree. In my experience, Apple speakers and 3.5mm jack are the best for every class of products that they're in. My iPhone 6 3.5mm jack has actually usable clean output, compared to the noticble hiss that gets worse when charging on my Legion 5 Pro and S10. I also prefer the sound tuning on Apple speakers, whether they are on an iPad, iPhone or Macbook
I am watching your channel for the first time and omg, Everything in this video is exceeding. The cinematography, video quality, audio quality, the b rolls, everything is awesome. Subscribed.
Thank you for your review. I've been thinking long and hard whether or not i should switch to mac or not and this review is the most honest I've found anywhere on UA-cam. I've had bad experiences with Macs in the past, thank you.
I've been using a refurbished M1 Air for a few months and I've had no issues. Love it.
that's pretty cool
Where did you get your refurbished from? Apple? If from Apple, did it look like brand new? I’m trying to save some money, but don’t want regrets.
Hey, where did you get it
Holy, this video was amazing. I just bought a refurbished M1 Mac Mini with 16gb of RAM and it's been amazing. I use Lightroom and Final Cut Pro primarily and it hasn't skipped a single beat. Been editing Sony A7riii RAWs and compared to my Macbook Pro, no more 1 second or 3-second delay before the adjustment is applied.
Just got a base model m1 air and honestly it's pretty good. Best screen for the price range, portability is good, battery is good, I have a blade 15.6 with 2070 for my main rig at home (and for trips) and the mac is complete fine for daily driving.
How much time does it last?
the idea of filming around the house is good, keep doing that and thanks
Have always been a Windows guy but the M1 Mac Air took me to the other side XD awesome machine, totally worth it. Great review.
It's been a while since I've been at this channel... and holy crap, the cinematography is incredible. The shot at 1:27... DAMN!

This review is spot on. It's pretty insane you need to spend more for an iPad with a dumbed down OS then can't do anything close to what this M1 Macbook Air can do. This can be had for $800 now and it's an amazing full fledged computer that can do almost anything.
bought a 2800 dollar lenovo last week, saw some videos on it and regret kicked in almost immediately as it was mostly a limp desktop gaming pc. cancelled that and got this and getting delivered tomorrow for 750( i can get a business invoice). with the money i saved i got a ps5 and can buy games for days . pc market is screwed rnow and for absolutely everything besides gaming, macs have gone from overpriced hipster shit to incredible value for money

I just got this lovely machine this weekend for $900 and absolutely I love it. Huge upgrade from the 2015 Air I had. The only purpose of my Mac is to do some light music production and video editing.
Hey...
I bought one after watching your review and I'm glad its just exactly what I wanted.

It’s amazing what the M1 can do if specced right. Amazing productivity with light gaming on the same device. This is really a dream laptops for students and people alike.
what games did you install and how was the performance? I wanna know plssssssss, I just want it to run Minecraft at like medium settings and csgo valorant maybe
@@crookshanks1883 Unfortunately Valorant does not work even in a VM. Minecraft runs great at 100+ FPS at max settings with 8 chunks using Rosetta 2. CSGO runs but I'm not sure of the performance.
You can use CrossOver or Parallels to run your games. Just make sure they work with either one of them or have a native Mac port.
@@ducks.c Dang it, I am a casual gamer for most of the part tho, I never owned any pc to game, only pc gaming experience I had so far is with CS, minecraft, Far cry 3 and Stardew valley lmao, them too with my i3 sixth gen (integrated graphics) from back in 2016, I think part of the reason I want a Mac is the limitations it has when it comes to gaming, I dont wanna get too distracted by it, I game on mobile anyways and the only gaming machine I wanna invest in is the next gen Nintendo switch prolly also a macbook will compliment my iPhone pretty well.

Thank god I found this review. Been trying to decide between the pro and air for months.
I bought one a few months ago and I’m mind blown over how good it is.
I love how everything is so snappy on these machines, and also that you can run ios apps.
But I think I'll wait for the 2022 model. Just switched to a heavy windows laptop (legion 7) for heavier work but I still have my macbook pro sitting around, not really using its capabilities, which I could sell for this. This would be the perfect portable private machine.
I hope they use the same colors as on the imacs and ipads, that'd look beautiful!

Such great video quality! Conversational content was great too. Welcome change over all the other spec check tech vids
i love all shots u give, thank you for effort
I was interested in the Macbook Air M1 when it came out, but I still had my Macbook Pro 13" 2014 which I was able to put together by buying different used parts. But the screen started to mess up on it. I saw that the base model of the m1 was on sale for $799 at Micro Center. So I went and checked out some of these long term reviews like yours, and I decided to pick it up. I am loving it so far. The speakers are mind blowing for their small form factor, the keyboard is really good as well. The battery is great, and even with only 8GB of ram, things have been performing great, I am able to multi-task as much as one would need to on a device like this. I can even do some retro emulation and some newer games. I am getting some drop outs here and there with my wifi, but it might be the fault of my wifi more so than the laptop. Also I agree with you that 256GB isn't really enough, but the base model is the one that was the most discounted at Micro Center.
For gaming and more intensive work, I have my recently built Windows PC. Ryzen 5600x, 16Gb of 3600mhz ram, and a 3060TI. I even will remote from my Macbook if I am at school or somewhere else, to my machine or PS4 at home to play some games. So for pretty much the same use case as you, surfing the web, basic productivity, watching videos, and even some light gaming, this device is a great deal.
Bought my M1 on day and have loved every moment I’ve had it with it. Can’t wait for Apple silicon on the 16 inch!
The wait is over today! (give or take getting your hands on one)
@@architennis Mind literally blown. Still not quite sure about the notch but I guess in dark mode, i'll get used to it. Everything else exceeded my expectations, by a quite a bit too. Just cant decide between Pro or Max now, hmm...
the filter, the back sound, the shoot more like the documentary of someone’s success omgg good for youuu!

The MacBook Air M1 base model is perfect for someone who isn't doing anything power hungry, at my work place some people actually use the MacBook air as their work laptop. We do a lot of web-based things. Most of them run the 8gb but some do have the 16gb. I want to get it but was thinking which one the 8gb or 16gb.
Quick tip: you can actually use an M1 MacBook with dual screens using a DisplayLink compatible adapter, it negotiates using USB protocols, it takes a hit on resolution but nothing major if multiple screens is a must.
you can use up to 4 with the 1x natively supported display and 3x displaylink displays

Cannot agreee more, sold my 27’ iMac, 15’ MBP, only regret is not getting 16GB. I have a lot of tabs for research, need more ram, only thing I’d get after this is when the 16’ comes out 🔥
My first macbook ever. Have been using the 8 core gpu/cpu version with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd for the past half year and am really impressed by the performance and build quality. It even runs Diablo3 quite well.

@@HardwareCanucks I'm not a power user but more ram and ssd space seemed like a safer bet for longevity. It's remarkable how well this thing works considering it's a passively cooled ARM-based SoC. There's no comparison to a windows laptop - the overall OS experience feels more "elegant", and the battery life is insane.
I love how this turns out to be a true review. No fuss. I'm looking for a good review on this because I am planning to buy one next month. My 1st Gen Iphone SE still works fine it's been ages since then. I'm keeping it still because it's receiving updates, and I thank Apple for that although there so many iPhones now. Same. 😅 Just ordered one. It will be a difficult start as it will be my first apple product but i think I'll definitely fall in love with macOS. Very excited tbh.
I have the 16GB / 1TB RAM Macbook Air M1 and I can confirm this laptop does everything and more. I have had absolutely 0 issues with it. I use it for writing my books that will never get published, hammering out code, running docker containers, and all the usual office needs (email, pdfs, MS Office, etc...). I also play games on it occasionally but the list of games that you can play on it is very small and rather disappointing, which is the only downside to this machine for me. That said, I do have my nintendo switch for all my "gaming on the go" purposes...
Also worth noting that I have a linux workstation that I use for super heavy lifting (scientific computing, long compiles, etc..) and for the small amount of pc gaming I do occasionally. I imagine that the "one external monitor" may really hold someone back from buying this but that is really the only con I see.
Can I learn from you 😩😩😩😩
First time watching your video, just clicked randomly and man I like your composition and lighting.
Great review, love watching your videos!
I needed this video a week ago... I bought a MacBook Pro i5 model. I've just started the return process and I'm going to get the M1. I had decided this before watching this video but it reinforces it.
Just wondering why you think Air is better than MBP?
@@BollywoodMediaOnline it's not just about Pro vs Air, it's about M1 vs i5 . In every aspects, M1 is superior to i5.

Also, this is probably the best laptop I’ve ever had. And there is a work around for multi monitor support using displaylink. It works very well.
I hate that I've only just stumbled onto this channel. Really superb work you've got here.
Great review, thank for giving us the opinion from a creative perspective.
the base model is (near) perfect - I do everything on it... it's my main work machine (office applications) sometimes - when I have everything open, lot of safari tabs, numerous long pdf's etc.. I feel some limitations from the 8gb of ram but nothing dramatic (and it's my only 'negative'). It outpaces my previous Macbook pro in all categories. Am also a huge fan and user of the seamless integration with my iPad. Storage - for me is not an issue, with the cloud and fast ssd's... My previous gold standard was the MacBook Air 2013 - battery was epic on that one, but it was underpowered (even editing a large word doc was sometimes difficult) so I had to upgrade to a MacBook Pro. With the M1, the Air has all the power I need, an excellent screen and a great battery...
M1 MBA base model is my first MacBook, and the best laptop I've ever owned. Completely agree with all your points!
Got a question for you because you're coming from windows. Have you tried cleaning off smudge on your MacBook? Have you found removing smudges to be harder on it than your windows laptops? Thanks

such an awesome and honest review thank you!
I have the Intel Quad i-5, and I’d trade out happily for the M1 air…the Intel units get quite hot just doing standard workload, and around 5-6 hours into a work day, the battery is pretty low. I’ve noticed Microsoft Teams burns a lot of resources- so that may be the reason my battery doesn’t last
I was just about to buy the base version but now you got me thinking about the 16GB version. Damn you 😀
Just found your channel, now this is a review, very informative.
I like this kind of honests and subjectives reviews. Thanks 👍🏼
Estatic to have grab one of these a week ago! at Best Buy with student deals at $749. They're at $799 RN (8/11/2021) at Best Buy. Been PC my whole life and this is my first Mac ever and I have an iPhone but really blown away by the battery life and how snappy this M1 chip is! Looking forward to the future apple m1x, m2 chips or whatever they decide to call its truly a game changing chip.
Had the M1 MBP base model since release and I love it, love the touchbar, love the speakers and screen but hate the keyboard (nothing will top a x1 carbon). Only issues I’ve encountered recently is battery life isn’t like when I first got it when doing the same tasks.
NOTHING beats Thinkpad keyboards. This is the only thing that's keeping me back from getting an air...
Occasionally, I think about dumping my iPad Pro for an X12 Detachable because the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad are the best you can get for keyboard. Even the detachable keyboard is pretty amazing.
Lovely production quality here and great review.
Just bought my first ever MacBook, m1 air and so far so good ! Loving it.
Good call on the upgrade of the memory beyond 256gb if you use this for more than productivity tasks. Agree that using your phone capacity is a good measure for how much memory you should buy. I do however think for the average person 256gb is plenty. That monitor you're using looks awesome. What monitor is it?
I’m an average person and my current (old as rocks) MacBook Air has 256gb and I don’t have that much memory left. I would recommend for the average user in 2022 to get no less than 512gb on a new computer. This will allow for “some” future proofing!
I’m waiting for the 16in MBP w/ Apple silicone
